Providing a review of evidence-based practices, the book is an essential reference for mathematics teachers and special education teachers when teaching mathematics to students who struggle with the critical concepts and skills necessary for success in algebra. Audiences: General education (mathematics) teachers, special education teachers, administrators, teacher educators.

Book excerpt: This research focused on the tools and questions (detailed thoroughly in a toolkit via PowerPoint) that can be helpful for middle school individualized education plans (IEPs) when discussing high school placement (i.e., specialized academic instruction with students with mild/mod disabilities, special day class for students with mod/severe disabilities, functional academics course and like skills coursework). Graduation requirements and the types of high school general and special education classroom settings were thoroughly discussed throughout the literature review and in multiple chapters within this toolkit. Components stated in the Educational Specialist's toolkit to eight to nineth grade IEP transition meetings include the data or documentation that factored into recommendation for high school placement, how parents/families were involved in the process, case managing and prepping for an eight grade transition meeting, administrator support throughout the transition process, and baseline/questions asked by high school Educational Specialists at an eighth grade transition meeting. This toolkit also included guidance that the current middle school IEP team and perspective high school Educational Specialists can use throughout the entire eighth grade year of students with disabilities and create a transition plan when discussing least restrictive environment for the students in high school.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the achievement gap has dominated policy discussions over the past two decades, relatively little attention has been paid to a gap even more at odds with American ideals: the opportunity gap. Opportunity and achievement, while inextricably connected, are very different goals. Every American will not go to college, but every American should be given a fair chance to be prepared for college. In communities across the U.S., children lack the crucial resources and opportunities, inside and outside of schools that they need if they are to reach their potential. Closing the Opportunity Gap offers accessible, research-based essays written by top experts who highlight the discrepancies that exist in our public schools, focusing on how policy decisions and life circumstances conspire to create the "opportunity gap" that leads inexorably to stark achievement gaps. They also describe sensible policies grounded in evidence that can restore and enhance opportunities. Moving beyond conventional academic discourse, Closing the Opportunity Gap will spark vital new conversations about what schools, parents, educators, and policymakers can and should do to give all children a fair chance to thrive.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recognizing the difficult time most youths face in finding a good job after high school graduation, the Austin (Texas) Independent School District developed strategies to improve the transition. A high level of collaborative activity was already underway in Austin between the school district and the community, but most programs had been started without linkage to each other or to the curriculum or instructional practices. Recommendations were made to design a system that would do the following: (1) improve career foundations (enhanced basic skills, thinking skills, personal traits, and career awareness and exploration for all youth; to develop learning and training records and career passports to document and signal career foundations, achievements, and experience); and (2) develop learning and training paths from high school into career opportunities in the workplace. Key principles underlying this strategy are to improve communication between industry and school personnel and to link work opportunities to effort and achievement in school, thereby strengthening incentives for students to learn. A proposal was made to implement the program with one school feeder school system in the district as a model. (Contains 189 references.) (KC)

Book excerpt: Standardized tests are an education reality and an important accountability consideration in most states and school systems. Most states require standardized assessments to meet requirements of the federal No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. Changes to curriculum and instruction and to the school culture frequently occur through a school improvement process, and standardized test data are often used to inform these decisions. The school improvement process and professional development should focus on student learning, but how administrators and teachers perceive standardized testing and the ensuing data analyses is an important consideration in understanding what needs improvement and the professional development that best supports student learning. Ultimately, standardized assessment results should inform changes to curriculum and instruction. However, who decides what change is needed or how to implement the change? In this study, the researcher seeks to understand the value of existing students' testing in middle school as it relates to and, perhaps, predicts their high school achievement in ninth grade.
