Book excerpt: 6 lectures and an essay, 1919-1920 (CW 297) World War I destroyed the structures, values, and self-confidence that created the seeming greatness of the nineteenth century. In its place stood ruins and the shards of a civilization. In response to this, Emil Molt--the director of the Waldorf-Astoria Cigarette Factory and a student of Rudolf Steiner--decided to establish a school to educate people who could create a new culture. Thus, the Waldorf school movement was begun. Rudolf Steiner agreed to act as the school's consultant, and his insights guided the school in accomplishing this ambitious task. The goal of this education was that, through living inner work guided by the insights of Rudolf Steiner, the teachers would develop in the children such power of thought, depth of feeling, and strength of will that they would emerge from their school years as full members of the human community, able to meet and transform the world. These lectures occurred around the opening of the first Waldorf school. They serve as an excellent, inspiring introduction to Waldorf education as a whole. Here Steiner outlines--with freshness, immediacy, and excitement--the goals and intentions of a new form of education and speaks to parents of prospective students. He explains the school's guiding principles and describes how parents must participate, with understanding and interest, in the awakening of their children's creative forces so that a healthier society can come about. Readers interested in the role of herbs and foods in healing will also find much to learn here, as I have. . . . A fine work.”—Annemarie Colbin, author of Food and Healing The promise and mystery of Chinese medicine has intrigued and fascinated Westerners ever since the “Bamboo Curtain” was lifted in the early 1970s. Now, in Between Heaven and Earth, two of the foremost American educators and healers in the Chinese medical profession demystify this centuries-old approach to health. Harriet Beinfeld and Efrem Korngold, pioneers in the practice of acupuncture and herbal medicine in the United States for over eighteen years, explain the philosophy behind Chinese medicine, how it works and what it can do. Combining Eastern traditions with Western sensibilities in a unique blend that is relevant today, Between Heaven and Earth addresses three vital areas of Chinese medicine—theory, therapy, and types—to present a comprehensive, yet understandable guide to this ancient system. Whether you are a patient with an aggravating complaint or a curious intellectual seeker, Between Heaven and Earth opens the door to a vast storehouse of knowledge that bridges the gap between mind and body, theory and practice, professional and self-care, East and West. “Groundbreaking . . . Here at last is a complete and readable guide to Chinese medicine.”—San Francisco Chronicle

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book answers the exciting question as to the origin and history of the Earth from a geological and a biblical perspective. It reveals the astounding compatibility that exists between the record of geology and the record of the Bible. It reveals the result of a sovereign plan by the Amazing Architect and Creator of the Universe for this Earth. It also confirms the words of Longfellows appeal to nature: Come walk with me, she said, into regions yet untrod, And read what is unsaid In the manuscripts of God. The Earth has been a place of life and habitation since the beginning of the Archean Age. The questions arise: Who were the Earths First Inhabitants? When did ocean water first appear on Earth? When did the first species of plant and animal life appear on Earth? What was the dramatic Cambrian Explosion of Animal Life? How does this event relate to all future animal species? The December 1995 issue of Time Magazine entitled this event, When Life Exploded. It described the sudden Explosion of Animal Life as an amazing frenzy that changed our planet over night. When did man and woman first appear on Earth? What were they like? What does the fossil evidence reveal?

Book excerpt: An Understanding of the biblical role of the Holy Spirit in the church, which is called the "Body of Christ", is extremely important as we move toward the close of the Church age. It's importance is recognized most profoundly as we accept the Scriptural reference of Christ as the Head of the Body, and accept His word as truth. The writer of the Epistle to the Hebrews declares that "Moses indeed was faithful in all his house as a servant ... But Christ as a Son over His own house, whose house we are if we hold fast to the confidence and rejoicing to the hope firm to the end" (Hebrews 3:5,6). And, in Paul's Epistle to the Ephesians, he assures us that God "put all things under His (Christ's) feet, and gave him to be head over all things to the church." Clearly we find in Scripture that "having learned obedience by the things which He suffered; and having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him. And He gave the eleven disciples one important command which is enveloped in what we may count as a farewell address gives a clear role that the Holy Spirit would assume after He ascended to His Father. This includes the assurance that He would continue to reveal truth to the church through the Holy Spirit, saying "I still have many things to say to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. However, when He the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears, He will speak, and He will tell you things to come. He will glorify Me, for He will take what is mine and declare it to you (John 6:12-15 NKJ-Version). This study then, is an attempt to clarify the role that Jesus commands the Holy Spirit to perform as an "Helper" to the church, who will abide with the church teaching us all things and bringing to remembrance the things that Jesus Christ, the Head wants us to do (John 14:26). The major message of this study is, should we not "Let Christ Be Heard." To that end it is my prayer that this work will be taken as a call back to the word of God as the foundation and building material for all theological matters that the church holds dearly. May we develop searching souls that will be able to divide between experiential myths and biblical truth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most important contributions of Chasidut to Judaism has been in the realm of psychology. Chasidic teachings interpret and apply the myriad Kabbalistic metaphors to the realm of the human psyche and soul. Yet, for all the expansive analyses and discussion of the human psyche produced by the Chasidic masters (specifically the Rebbes of Chabad-Lubavitch), there has been a pronounced lack of an ordered and modern review of the psyche. In the early years of the 20th century, Dr. Fischel Schneersohn, a colleague of Sigmund Freud and a relative of the then Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Shalom Dov Ber Schneersohn, took it upon himself to translate the Chasidic nomenclature and discourse on the psyche into scientific language that would be useful to the modern psychologist. Unfortunately, for whatever the reasons may be, his yearning to share the Torah s wisdom on the psyche was not to be fulfilled. Since then, the need for introducing these teachings to the public in general and to the professional field of psychologists has only grown. This book is an important contribution to the creation of psychology and therapeutic techniques based purely on the Divine wisdom of the Torah and specifically its inner dimensions of Kabbalah and Chassidut. By offering a structured review and explanation of the psyche and its place in the larger and more complex super-structure of the soul, this volume provides a foundational guide for mental and spiritual health practitioners as well as for those wishing to deepen their understanding of Kabbalah and Chassidut.

Book excerpt: Brought together for the first time - the seminal writing on architecture by key philosophers and cultural theorist of the twentieth century. Issues around the built environment are increasingly central to the study of the social sciences and humanities. The essays offer a refreshing take on the question of architecture and provocatively rethink many of the accepted tenets of architecture theory from a broader cultural perspective. The book represents a careful selection of the very best theoretical writings on the ideas which have shaped our cities and our experiences of architecture. As such, Rethinking Architecture provides invaluable core source material for students on a range of courses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New York Times bestselling authors of Lessons from the Light offer a new and provocative understanding of heaven and how messages from the afterlife can assist you in the here and now. We live in a world of near-universal acceptance that once our lives on the earth come to an end we continue to a greater world. Whether that destination is called "Heaven," "Nirvana," or simply "The Other Side," tradition teaches us that there is, in most cases, a fairy-tale ending to life, a place where joy and harmony reigns supreme. Yet, as this book attests there is still more to heaven and earth than is dreamt of in our philosophies. George Anderson is considered by many to be the greatest medium living today. After more than 50 years of hearing from souls who have transitioned to the world hereafter, he is constantly reminded by those who have passed that our preconceived notions of this life—and the next—aren’t always accurate. The nine stories in this book illuminate times when unusual circumstances such as sudden death, unresolved emotions, abusive relationships, and painful family dynamics, make it necessary for the dead and the living to find new doors to healing. In session with Anderson, survivors and those who have passed meet again in encounters that are profound, bittersweet, highly-emotional and sometimes, downright, funny. What we learn is that there are little-known spiritual treasures—and lessons to be learned—about heaven and earth that can restore, revitalize, and make new what was once broken. Life Between Heaven and Earth is an inspiring, thought-provoking, path-changing work, one that affirms that no matter how complicated a circumstance is, resolution, peace and acceptance can be found in deep and remarkable ways.
