Book excerpt: Through the eyes of 20 warriors of sexual assault, you will be transformed into the mindset and universe of a person that has battled for and won their lives back from someone who aimed to take it away from them. Breaking Through the Silence; the Journey to Surviving Sexual Assault is a compilation book of interviews from warriors of from all over the world, as well as 18 professionals and other people that provide a support system, from SANE nurses to Friends, for warriors. The purpose of this book is to allow warriors who still feel isolated and silenced to know that they are never alone, that they never will be alone. By including stories from other warriors, victims can find someone to relate to. They can see their journey, what happened, how they reacted, what they used to cope, and finally, where they are now, and gain insight and hope in maneuvering through their journey to survive. And following the stories, are first-person accounts from professionals in related fields; SANE nurses, Detectives, Prosecutors, Social Workers and more. As well as other means of support; Friends, Advocates, Significant others. These are the people who make up the full support system that many warriors used to help them cope and heal. It is also an easily navigated manual for support systems to utilize when they are helping a survivor. The insight you'll gain from reading this will help understand what the warrior is going through, whether or not they are capable of fully verbalizing it yet. The lessons, insights, mentalities, coping mechanisms, everything your survivor may be experiencing, can be better understood from the voice of someone else who experienced it and coped with it. The events in this book are all very different. No two assaults are the same, ever. However, there are pieces that connect us all to each other. There are similarities, and comfort in the fact that no story is unique. To recognize that is powerful. It unites us all and makes us stronger together. Once we all see the light and realize that there are more people who have been traumatized like this, than people who are assaulting, it will take power from the abusers, and put it in the hands of the warriors. We can and will end this.A prevalent theme throughout this book is advice from warriors. Almost every warrior will tell you that talking about it makes the entire situation easier to conceptualize and heal. Most of us, myself included, began our healing journey the moment we were able to admit it to ourselves and somebody else that we were raped or assaulted. It is so unfortunately common for people to feel ashamed that this has happened to them as if it's our faults, we asked for it, or we deserved it. But that is COMPLETELY untrue. This happened TO us. WE didn't make the choice, in fact, we didn't have a choice. The people who abuse us deserve to feel the way we feel. We deserve the platform & strength to be supported and speak out about what happened to us without backlash, disbelief, and shame. This book is our call to action. There are more than 1 in 4 women and girls, and 1 in 6 men and boys that are sexually assaulted every year. Those numbers are inferred from the number of cases that are reported every year and produced by the CDC. As you'll see through the content in this book, those numbers are significantly lower than the real number of assaults per year. Only about 5% of assaults are reported. The world is changing. Our voices are beginning to be heard, but it is just starting. Let's teach society how life-changing it is to be raped and assaulted by telling our stories. We need to be the change and speak up. At the end of the day, everybody knows somebody who has endured some type of sexual assault, whether you know it or not. Understanding that sexual assault changes the person you are, may deter a support network from turning their back on a survivor because of the way they are handling their assault.

As a matter of fact, you wonder if you made the right decision . . . but you love him. This is the way every marriage is, right? Your relationship is normal, right? For more than 1 million women in the United States, abuse—whether emotional or physical—is a way of life. Every day these women put on invisible chains. Breaking Invisible Chains, written specifically for women by women, is an honest, personal, and encouraging message of hope and illumination. Written by three survivors, the personal stories these women share will help you realize if you are in an abusive relationship or one that is just normal. A professional therapist includes insight into specific abuse situations, while each chapter contains a strong scriptural emphasis. The authors stress the role of forgiveness throughout the book, and they include realistic advice on how to handle the ongoing dynamics after the relationship ends if it turns out your relationship is not normal.

It represents over three decades of research, advocacy, and pastoral theological reflection on the subject of sexual and domestic violence. Topics include intimate partner violence, sexual abuse and trauma, and clergy sexual misconduct; controversial theological issues such as forgiveness; and, as well, positive frameworks for fostering well-being in families, church, and society. Framed by a foreword and an introduction that place this work in the context of new and contemporary challenges in theory and practice, these essays show an evolution of issues and frameworks for theology, care, and activism arising over time from the movement to end violence against women (both within and beyond religious communities)--while at the same time demonstrating an unchanging core commitment to gender justice.

Book excerpt: Violence and insecurity are among the most important issues facing communities in the 21st century. Both family violence and community violence are rapidly rising in the urbanizing nations of the South, and richer nations are also facing increased concern about the health, social, economic and environmental costs of violence and crime. The Handbook of Community Safety, Gender and Violence Prevention is the first book to gather together research and examples, from a gendered perspective, of local, regional and international interventions that work to prevent crime, violence and insecurity. Case studies of successful initiatives from every continent, in settings that vary from large cities to rural areas, are analysed to provide cross-cultural lessons of what works and what doesnt. The book presents essential practical advice to professionals such as: how to obtain diagnostic information on incidence and impacts of violence; how to develop, maintain and evaluate policies and programmes that can effectively promote community safety; and how to create trust and effectiveness in partnerships.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I always felt the desire to help people who suffered, especially women with their children in their arms. GOD was processing me on the ground and in the middle of the process. I was given spiritual weapons and intellectual training to do the work; There are very difficult cases, but the Holy Spirit will always have the answer that we humanly do not have. In my 20-year journey accompanying women and their children who are victims of abuse, I have been able to identify the relational dynamics of violated families in their daily lives and in all their manifestations. We have observed that they are transmitted from one generation to another, repeating the family conflicts and patterns of violence that they have seen in their parents and families of origin, which they then repeat in their future partners. Usually, people are not aware of this, however, when they manage to identify it and decide to seek help, possibilities of change are generated in their lives and in their way of relating. Domestic violence is a problem with multiple causes that affects a huge amount of the world's population with similar characteristics, and that is equally present in all religions, professions, races, social classes, and cultures... it concerns both the individual and familiar. Domestic violence brings with it serious negative consequences for its victims, which can occur within the home, which is sometimes shared or not with the aggressor; includes threats and verbal, psychological and/or physical abuse; sexual attack and property abuse. In my journey, I have observed that the victims most prone to abuse are women, minors, the elderly, people with physical disabilities, lesbians, and homosexuals. Cases of violence against men are not classified as a public health problem, since the percentage ranges between 5%-7%, contrary to cases of violence against women. We will be focusing the book on how children suffer the consequences of their parents' unresolved problems, becoming triangulated within the intra-family conflict as secondary victims. Due to all of the above and its disastrous consequence, the situation raised is critical, which is why it is extremely necessary to support the victims with a broad vision that impacts and generates important changes in the lives of women, since it is a social problem. and public health, the fundamental rights of those affected. Violence against women is the third cause that is causing the most premature deaths, leaving physical and psychological consequences in women, above ischemic heart disease and traffic accidents. It has been possible to identify three levels of impact of violence on women: 40% of them suffer a slight or mild impact. 30%, a medium impact, and the other 30%, a deep or serious impact that puts her life and that of her children at risk. What we see every day on the news and in our environment is just the tip of the iceberg of this scourge. Violence has a very powerful ally, which is the POWER OF SILENCE that we must all break. I wish that ecclesiastical leaders, trainers, businessmen, chaplains, men and women, be part of the solution and not part of the problem. Support, training, mental redesigns and commitment of an entire society are needed to generate changes. I know that this book will serve as a guide and information to people who are experiencing such painful problems and will help tell them that there is always a way out, because there is no situation that has no solution, since nothing is impossible for God.

Book excerpt: "Breaking the Chains: Empowering Women to End Violence" is a comprehensive and compelling book that addresses the urgent issue of gender-based violence and advocates for women's empowerment as a solution. Through a blend of personal narratives, research-based insights, and practical strategies, the book sheds light on the prevalence and impact of violence against women worldwide. It emphasizes the need for empowerment as a multifaceted approach to addressing the root causes of violence and promoting gender equality. The book begins by examining the various forms of violence that women experience, including physical, emotional, sexual, and economic abuse, and delves into the root causes and perpetuating factors that contribute to these forms of violence. It provides a nuanced understanding of the historical context of women's empowerment, highlighting milestones in women's rights movements and addressing cultural and societal barriers to empowerment. Drawing on psychological research, the book explores the psychological impact of violence on women, including trauma, coping mechanisms, and the role of societal stigma and victim-blaming. It then presents empowerment strategies, such as education, economic independence, legal advocacy, and community support networks, as pathways to healing and resilience. Through case studies of successful empowerment initiatives, the book demonstrates the power of grassroots organizations, government-led programs, and international collaborations in supporting survivors and promoting social change. It also highlights the importance of engaging men and boys in ending violence against women and breaking down toxic masculinity. In conclusion, "Breaking the Chains" issues a powerful call to action, urging individuals and communities to unite in the fight against gender-based violence and reaffirming the commitment to creating a world where all individuals can live free from fear and oppression.
