Book excerpt: Breaking Into The Movies is a humorous true story, of the life of a kid from Inglewood California. Somehow, most likely, just through dumb luck, he made it up the food chain to become a Quasi, world famous Motion Picture Key Grip. No, the common person on the street would not have heard of him. And no, other motion picture personal, don't recognize him on movie sets. Hell, his kids, hardly recognize him! So, how is this some so famous, you ask? He is the author of the "Grip Book!" A.k.a. the Grips Bible, now in it's fifth edition from Taylor-Francis. Why it's even been translated into Korean. (That's really gonna' help all the aspiring grips here in Hollywood!) Here's the kicker, Mike can't spell... or type... nor does he have any command of the English language. None of that has held him back. Actually, not much holds him back. Not even having a half-inch shorter left leg. Courtesy of a motorcycle jumping accident while serving eight years in the Marines. So after, staff sergeant's Uva's medical discharge, he decided to become a Licensed, FAA - Aircraft Mechanic at LAX, in California. If that wasn't enough...he later wanted to be a State Licensed Building Contractor. How selfish was this guy? He wanted to, "follow his bliss..." whatever that is, and make it to Hollywood? There, he actually, found bliss. Richard Bliss, who gave him street directions to Paramount Studios. He made a left... or right turn, or maybe just went straight. But I digress. The point being, he did go on, through twenty miles of snow... this high... Okay, he became a motion picture Key Grip in the film industry. He had arrived! Well, one would think that one would have been content... not Mike. He decided to author a book, (Remember... can't spell.) Not surprising to Mike, just the rest of the world, it did relatively well... eventually. So then he decided to teach at U.C.L.A. at the Extension course. He has been there; seen that, and most likely broke it. But yet, you say, you have never heard of any of the things that he has been part of? That's because Hollywood has a huge respect for each other. We never have leaks, we never squeal, or write tell all books. Most stories are all closely held and guarded set secrets... until now! Mike has worked with the Lone Ranger, Elvira, Val Kilmer, Al Pacino, and a few really famous people as well. So why would he break tradition and give away these secrets of how to get in the unguarded, unlocked, back doors, you ask? I posed that very question to him. "Mike, why did you give away all these secrets that you have had, tucked away, upstairs in that melon head of yours for over thirty-five plus years?" His answer was quite simple... "Ah... What?" (He's a grip; dare I say more?) I rewrote the question, "Why now?" His amazing answer... "It's time!" (I reiterate; he's a grip!) There, you have it folks, literally straight from the horses mouth... or the bulls other end! You will just have to read it and decide for yourselves. See you all in Hollywood very soon... or not!

And, on the other hand, there are the men who manage the movies sending out all manner of exhortations, appeals and supplications to just such people to come and work in their studios. Briggs is properly impressed and Stone says to him: SP: "BRIGGS, I HAVE PROVIDED IN MY WILL THAT IF I DIE BEFORE MY SON YOU ARE TO STAY ON WITH HIM AS LONG AS YOU LIVE." Book excerpt: I am down to a pencil, a pen, and a bottle of ink. I hope one day to eliminate the pencil. Al Hirschfeld redefined caricature and exemplified Broadway and Hollywood, enchanting generations with his mastery of line. His art appeared in every major publication during nine decades of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, as well as on numerous book, record, and program covers; film posters and publicity art; and on fifteen U.S. postage stamps. Now, The Hirschfeld Century brings together for the first time the artist’s extraordinary eighty-two-year career, revealed in more than 360 of his iconic black-and-white and color drawings, illustrations, and photographs—his influences, his techniques, his evolution from his earliest works to his last drawings, and with a biographical text by David Leopold, Hirschfeld authority, who, as archivist to the artist, worked side by side with him and has spent more than twenty years documenting the artist’s extraordinary output. Here is Hirschfeld at age seventeen, working in the publicity department at Goldwyn Pictures (1920–1921), rising from errand boy to artist; his year at Universal (1921); and, beginning at age eighteen, art director at Selznick Pictures, headed by Louis Selznick (father of David O.) in New York. We see Hirschfeld, at age twenty-one, being influenced by the stylized drawings of Miguel Covarrubias, newly arrived from Mexico (they shared a studio on West Forty-Second Street), whose caricatures appeared in many of the most influential magazines, among them Vanity Fair. We see, as well, how Hirschfeld’s friendship with John Held Jr. (Held’s drawings literally created the look of the Jazz Age) was just as central as Covarrubias to the young artist’s development, how Held’s thin line affected Hirschfeld’s early caricatures. Here is the Hirschfeld century, from his early doodles on the backs of theater programs in 1926 that led to his work for the drama editors of the New York Herald Tribune (an association that lasted twenty years) to his receiving a telegram from The New York Times, in 1928, asking for a two-column drawing of Sir Harry Lauder, a Scottish vaudeville singing sensation making one of his (many) farewell tours, an assignment that began a collaboration with the Times that lasted seventy-five years, to Hirschfeld’s theater caricatures, by age twenty-five, a drawing appearing every week in one of four different New York newspapers. Here, through Hirschfeld’s pen, are Ethel Merman, Benny Goodman, Judy Garland, Mickey Rooney, Katharine Hepburn, the Marx Brothers, Barbra Streisand, Elia Kazan, Mick Jagger, Ella Fitzgerald, Laurence Olivier, Martha Graham, et al. . . . Among the productions featured: Fiddler on the Roof, West Side Story, Rent, Guys and Dolls, The Wizard of Oz (Hirschfeld drew five posters for the original release), Gone with the Wind, The Sopranos, and more. Here as well are his brilliant portraits of writers, politicians, and the like, among them Ernest Hemingway (a pal from 1920s Paris), Tom Wolfe, Charles de Gaulle, Nelson Mandela, Joseph Stalin, Winston Churchill, and every president from Franklin D. Roosevelt to Bill Clinton. Sumptuous and ambitious, a book that gives us, through images and text, a Hirschfeld portrait of an artist and his age.

Book excerpt: This richly detailed examination of two forms of American entertainment focuses on the various ways that radio stations and air personalities have been depicted in motion pictures, from 1926's The Radio Detective to more recent films like 2022's Halloween Ends. Newly updated and revised chapters cover the cinematic portrayals of various aspects of radio, including disc jockeys, sports broadcasts, religious programs and abnormal personalities on the air. Such films as The Big Broadcast (1932), Reveille with Beverly (1943), Mister Rock and Roll (1957), WUSA (1970), Radio Days (1987), Private Parts (1997), We Are Marshall (2006) and Straight Outta Compton (2015) provide fascinating insights into not only their own times but also the historical eras that some of these films have attempted to recreate.
