Download or read book Braving Home written by Jake Halpern and published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. This book was released on 2015-02-10 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A journalist visits five of America’s disaster-zone towns and the devoted residents who chose to stay despite hellish conditions. As a young reporter, Jake Halpern became obsessed with stories about "some outlandish and often hellish place inhabited by a handful of stalwarts who refused to leave." His fellow reporters joked with him and nicknamed him the Bad Homes Correspondent. But the more he learned about these people, the more he was drawn to them. Braving Home is Halpern’s irresistible portrait of these hometowns and his friendships with their most loyal residents. In North Carolina, Halpern meets a retired mill worker who single-handedly manned his hometown in the wake of a devastating flood. In Alaska, he visits a lone snowbound high-rise at the foot of a glacier. At the base of a Hawaiian volcano, he stays with a hermit whose house was surrounded by molten lava. Among the glitterati of Malibu, a longtime "hillbilly" teaches him the traditions of firefighting. And on a barrier island off the coast of Louisiana, a legendary storm rider tells of surviving hurricanes—even if it means tying one's hair to a tree. Throughout his journey, Halpern explores the value of rootedness in an age when American society is more mobile than ever.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Captain Bancroft couldnt believe this resort. The beaches were pristine. The rooms were comfortable. Everything was so relaxing. The only area off limits was the northern beaches and an area they called the trench. He asked a Mr. Jones why. Mr. Jones told him that since he was head of security. He would take him out to the cliffs and show him the reason. While out there they saw a large sea bird flying over the water. That was when a large shark leaped from the water and snatched it from the air. Mr. Jones pointed out that is why the northern beaches and the trench were off limits. Bancroft decided that was a good reason. The rest of the crew was just having a good time. Mrs. Svedberg ran the resort like a general. The service staff seemed happy, despite the fact that she seemed demanding to work for. He also was confused by the large canus that seemed to have free run of the island. Till he was told they were part of the security detail. Yet, he liked what he saw. These Maxumus were good at what they did. Bancroft decided he was a lucky bear. At the very least his life would probably never be boring. He was going to be right.

Book excerpt: One chance at her big break. One charming cameraman standing in her way. Jackie Strauss is drowning in nautical-themed Christmas decorations. When her holiday-obsessed neighborhood is selected for a documentary, the DIY expert realizes she's in over her head as the cameras start rolling and she starts fumbling. But the variable most likely to result in her total failure falls solely on the broad, muscular shoulders of the charismatic cameraman who’s documenting her every move. The man she once had a fiery hot one-night stand with. Scott Davis uses work to avoid anything beyond a fling. Unfortunately, his strategy of quickly moving from one filming location to another leads him straight back to the one woman he never got over: Jackie Strauss. But he's only in town temporarily and getting involved with anyone in the documentary is strictly forbidden, so he keeps his camera up as a barrier and somehow resists the achingly strong desire to ravage Jackie under one of her perfectly placed mistletoes. With Scott’s next flight out already booked, can Jackie convince him their love is worth the risk of losing everything? *This spicy holiday rom-com has it all: an ornery cat, quirky neighbors who are like family, small-town holiday festivities, a ride-or-die bestie, multiple Richard Simmons mentions (because why not), and an HEA that's sure to melt hearts. He figures it will be semi-retirement, sort of like running a country club. After all, how much crime can there be? McAvoy soon discovers that his homicide skills will not atrophy from lack of use. Murder, as it turns out, is an equal-opportunity crime that not only resides in large bustling cities like Detroit, but in sleepy, little Catskill villages as well. In the sixth Ed McAvoy Mystery, the festive atmosphere of the annual Winter Carnival is shattered by an act of vandalism on a food truck during the first night of the week-long fair and accusations run rampant among rival vendors. But when the two-time National Champion is attacked and injured at the National Figure Skating pre-trials and one of the mobile chefs is found shot to death, McAvoy must get to the bottom of things quickly before the food-fight turns even deadlier.
