Where I started writing Love of Break Dancing and My Life with My B-boy Husband along with the next book. While writing I enjoy drinking a cup of coffee and listening to music. You may have seen me on the internet due to me being different, having a lot of piercings. I hope the readers really enjoy the books that I have written in which I call the new line love. New line love means to write a romantic story that is different from the rest. I am a twenty-five-year-old black girl who’s a hopeless romantic and believes in love. I am also nerdy and wear black lipstick. Being different is brave, powerful, and wonderful and beautiful. Self-love is important. The greatest thing in the world is love.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Studies of four musicians . . . and a broader discussion about diaspora and migration provides an important study of African music in the United States.” —Alex Perullo, author of Live from Dar es Salaam Daniel B. Reed integrates individual stories with the study of performance to understand the forces of diaspora and mobility in the lives of musicians, dancers, and mask performers originally from Côte d’Ivoire who now live in the United States. Through the lives of four Ivorian performers, Reed finds that dance and music, being transportable media, serve as effective ways to understand individual migrants in the world today. As members of an immigrant community who are geographically dispersed, these performers are unmoored from their place of origin and yet deeply engaged in presenting their symbolic roots to North American audiences. By looking at performance, Reed shows how translocation has led to transformations on stage, but he is also sensitive to how performance acts as a way to reinforce and maintain community. Abidjan USA provides a multifaceted view of community that is at once local, national, and international, and where identity is central, but transportable, fluid, and adaptable. “Daniel B. Reed’s scholarship is solid and his writing style is thoroughly engaging. The topic is novel; there are fascinating twists and turns throughout.” —Eric Charry, editor of Hip Hop Africa “This study’s attention to the intersection of lived experiences with wider historical events and social formations, as well as the author’s careful analysis of Ivorian ballet and the dances and drum rhythms that constitute the genre, make Abidjan USA an important intervention in ethnomusicology and folklore.” —Journal of American Folklore

Book excerpt: Private First Class R was an excellent soldier so it was unlike him to be late. When he came in a few minutes later I could see by the grim look on his face that something was terribly wrong. He immediately began to cry and tell me that his wife had miscarried the child they had so badly wanted. I had never seen anyone cry as much as he did that morning and one box of tissues simply was not enough. After a while, the front of his uniform was soaked from his many tears, and I felt horrible seeing him suffer. It was one of those times when I would have moved Heaven and Earth if I could have but I could not. It humbled me because I wanted to order someone to do something to fix the problem, but this time it would not be that simple. I had always taken pride in looking out for the welfare of the soldiers in my charge but this time was different; I knew I was not a miracle worker but I felt I had let him down because as much as I wanted to, I did not have the power to bring back his baby. It was the worst day of my Army career because a good soldier who looked up to me for wisdom and guidance was in peril, and there was nothing I could do. I felt like a weakened Superman hopelessly dragging his feet through a field of Kryptonite, because there I was with all my rank and power that the Army had entrusted in me, but I was useless to him.

Book excerpt: "The idea of style and competing for the best style is the key to all forms of rockin'." – Style Wars, 1983. Are subcultures, like graffiti, floating free in their own space, or are they connected to the rest of society? In Forms of Rockin’, graffiti styles are connected to graphic design and other popular culture expressions such as music, fashion, photography, industrial design and movies for the first time. Anssi Arte analyses some of the most powerful visual symbols of the 1970s, 80s and 90s and compares design, typography and graffiti styles. The visual styles of James Brown, Blade Runner, the Memphis group and grunge music all appear together with classic fonts and graffiti writers. The clear yet analytical narrative and carefully crafted visualizations make it appealing to both graphic design aficionados as well as graffiti enthusiasts. But Forms of Rockin’ is more than that. This is a must for everybody interested in contemporary popular culture and design history. Forms of Rockin' traces and defines the stylistic conventions in graffiti letterforms that have become iconic and globally acknowledged ideals. From the early New York tags to the mid-1990s ugly-fresh styles of Scandinavia, Forms of Rockin’ tells the story of how popular culture and graffiti styles influences each other.

Book excerpt: A dark and comic novel, Congratulations On Everything tracks the struggles, frailties and cruelly pyrrhic victories of the middle-aged owner of a bar-restaurant and a 30ish lunch shift waitress. Jeremy has bought into the teachings of an empowerment and success guru, hook, line and sinker. A Toronto service industry lifer, he's risen through the ranks until he finally takes the keys to his destiny and opens his own place, The Ice Shack. Everyone assumes Ice Shack daytime waitress Charlene is innocent and empathetic, but in reality she's desperately unhappy and looking for a way out of her marriage to her high-school sweetheart. A drunken encounter between Charlene and her boss Jeremy sends them both careening. The Ice Shack stops being an oasis of sanity and, as Jeremy struggles to keep his business afloat, he'll stop at nothing to maintain his successful, good guy self-image. In an era when foodies rule and chefs become superstars, Congratulations On Everything is a hilarious and occasionally uncomfortable dose of anti-foodie reality that reveals what goes on when the customers and Instagrammers aren't around — and even sometimes when they are.

The world's hottest star is also its most mysterious. Few fans realize that this so-called overnight success is actually the product of a lifetime of planning and struggle. This book follows every step of Vin Diesel's rise from his days as a poor but happy mischief-maker in New York's Greenwich Village -- where an act of vandalism led to his stage debut at the age of seven -- through the long years spent toiling as a bouncer in Manhattan's trendiest clubs while trying to break into Hollywood -- to his first "big break" from Steven Spielberg. Take a look behind the scenes of each of Vin's films -- the roles he fought for, the role he walked away from after filming had begun, and the leading ladies he continued to see off-screen. VIN DIESEL: XXXPOSED takes on the rumors about his background and his ego and reveals how fame has taken its toll on the intensely private star. This is the unlikely and inspiring story of how an outsider who wouldn't give up transformed himself into the action hero of the new millennium.
