Book excerpt: The official publication on the Belgian contribution to the Biennale Architettura 2016 in Venice. It is a further elaboration of the work exhibited in the pavilion and a contribution to the architectural debate in Flanders and beyond. Comprised out of essays, interviews and images, this book offers an answer to the question what craftsmanship can mean today. The Flanders Architecture Institute commissioned the architects to develop an exhibition in the Belgian pavilion on the theme of 'craftsmanship'. The team, consisting of architecten de vylder vinck taillieu, doorzon interior architects, and architectural photographer and artist Filip Dujardin, explores the question of what craftsmanship can mean in conditions of scarcity. In order to demonstrate this, the pavilion exhibits fragments of thirteen representative projects of thirteen Flemish architects. Exhibition: Biennale Venice, Belgian Pavilion (28.05.-27.11.2016).

Book excerpt: The art and architectural photographer Filip Dujardin has been working on a series since 2007 whose humour and entertainment value is accompanied by references to art history. With the aid of digital collage technique consisting of photographs of existing buildings in and around Ghent, the city of his birth, the artist creates buildings that have been ingeniously imbedded in the landscape and whose construction would be impossible - fabrications in the true sense of the word.

Perhaps it is high time for a xeno-architecture to match aims to unpack the prefix xeno, probing what it entails -not merely rhetorically but also as a means of practice- in an attempt to bring the ideas it contains more concretely into the domain of architecture. It proposes to link the more philosophical discussions on the notion of xeno with the questions of instrumentalization and governance that are necessarily involved in the praxis and geopolitics of architecture. And it relates the significance of legal architectures and technologically driven transformations in the metaphysics of law back to the agenda of xeno-architecture."

Book excerpt: From the first field trips for the design of a library in Burundi to involving over 150 workshop participants in the construction of a public building in Belgium, the stories compiled in this book tell how BC architects & studies engage in acts of building. BC believes that, in order to have a positive impact on our society, architects need to intervene beyond the narrow definition of the professional who designs and controls the execution of buildings. Hence, BC ventures into material production, contracting, storytelling, knowledge transfer, community organization, which influence their design approach.0By describing the way BC architects & studies design and perform the act of building, the book suggests a trajectory of how BC hopes architecture can contribute to our world in transition.00Exhibition: Belgian Pavilion, 16th Architecture Biennale, Venice, Italy (26.05.-25.11.2018).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Age of Revolution, Paris came alive with wildly popular virtuoso performances. Whether the performers were musicians or chefs, chess players or detectives, these virtuosos transformed their technical skills into dramatic spectacles, presenting the marvelous and the outré for spellbound audiences. Who these characters were, how they attained their fame, and why Paris became the focal point of their activities is the subject of Paul Metzner's absorbing study. Covering the years 1775 to 1850, Metzner describes the careers of a handful of virtuosos: chess masters who played several games at once; a chef who sculpted hundreds of four-foot-tall architectural fantasies in sugar; the first police detective, whose memoirs inspired the invention of the detective story; a violinist who played whole pieces on a single string. He examines these virtuosos as a group in the context of the society that was then the capital of Western civilization. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press’s mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. This loss resonated with the French, who had dealt with smaller epidemics in France and were also mourning their absent communities through a nostalgia for home. Blum traces how ghosts provided transgenerational and transcultural links that guided understanding rather than encouraging violence. Ghost Brothers insightfully examines the process of this colonial interdependent alliance between Native and European worlds.

Book excerpt: This beautifully illustrated book accompanies an exhibit at gta exhibitions of ETH Zurich that focuses on artworks featuring carefully designed stages--a deliberate blurring of the border between art, architecture, and performance. Creating static, yet theatrical, tableaux in which artists can highlight the interplay between the disciplines of art and architecture, the stages at the same time represent a wide range of creative approaches to art and art making, and they also offer reflections on sources of artistic inspiration, including books and films. A lasting record of a carefully--and creatively--curated exhibition, Theater Objects will surprise and impress architects, artists, and fans of both forms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study addresses the dating of Middle Egyptian literary texts from the perspective that has merited the least attention so far, language. General discussions concern aspects of the linguistic situation in early/mid-second millennium BCE Egypt, the nature of the record in which the primary linguistic description is necessarily carried out, processes of textual alteration in the course of transmission, and the configurations of Middle Egyptian in literature. In the case of Middle Egyptian literary texts, the major strategy for dating consists in studying phenomena of written innovation and obsolescence in relevant registers in order to define upper and lower temporal bounds for a composition to be dated. In a complementary approach, not indexed on linguistic change, distinctive linguistic repertoires and phenomena of linguistic re-composition are directly targeted. Implications that spring from the proposed datings are outlined with a view on how these could affect the discussion of the cultural functions and of the historical development of Middle Egyptian literature. Beyond dating, the book is more broadly a study of the language of Middle Egyptian literature, of differences internal to this tradition, and of how it productively relates to other written discourses on linguistic levels as much as on semantic ones.
