Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years there has been an increasing demand for fire retardant versions of a range of plastics. Such applications are fire retardancy in vehicles, aircraft, manned space vehicles, marine and industrial applications such as electronics and a wide range of applications in the building industry including roofing and interior walls. Also in domestic applications such as furniture, clothes, bedding, upholstery and electrical goods. Fire retardancy in polymers can be achieved by either of three ways. Firstly there are forms of polymers, such as polytetrafluoroethylene, which are intrinsically fire retardant. The second type are rendered fire retardant by the inclusion of a suitable additive in the formulation. These include additives based on bromine, antimony, nitrogen phosphorus and silicon. An essential requirement for fire retardant polymers used in enclosed spaces is that they do not release any toxic products upon combustion. In this respect antinomy containing additives are going out of favour due to the release of toxic antimony volatiles upon combustion. Thirdly, introduction of intumescence into polymers by the introduction of suitable compounds is being increasingly used as a means of imparting fire retardancy in polymers. There exists a plethora of methods used to assess fire retardancy in polymers. These are discussed and summarised in this book. The book will be of interest not only to working in industry but also to design engineers and producers in the polymer fabrication industries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many years "safety technology" has constituted the essential instrument for the prevention of accidents as a direct result of handling new technology. Its awareness of the interactions prevalent in natural science causes safety technology to act on the basis of actual accidents, and it Ulilizes to their fullest extent any means provided by the engineering sciences. Man proceeds in a general direction towards preselVation and improvement, thus working towards the optimization of the technical design. However. a new set of basic problems presented itself the moment new large-scale technologies were introduced into the areas of processing, energy, and traffic, thereby creating a considerable amount of ad ditional danger potential. This also signified the end of an era when safety technology could be practiced chiefly on the basis of accident statistics. For ethical reasons it became necessary that a credible prognosis as to the type and effect of accidents took the place, or at least supplemented, the hitherto practiced purely reactive methods. The realization that the available means of safety technology were no longer sufficient in a highly technologized environment spurred the demand for entirely new concepts which would eventually lead to a higher degree of safety. A decisive step had to be taken away from a purely technical approach and fOwards and all-encompassing look at accident systems, because man had become aware of the fact that accidents will always be a part of the interaction between man, technology, and environment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to familiarize the reader with the practical aspects of polymer analysis. A wealth of practical detail, including some detailed methods is included. The book covers not only the analysis of the main types of polymers and copolymers now in use commercially, but also the analysis of minor non-polymeric components of the polymer formulation, whether they be deliberately added, such as processing additives, or whether they occur adventitiously, such as moisture and residual monomers and solvent. A broad scheme for the examination of polymers is discussed in Chapter 2. Practically all of the major newer analytical techniques and many of the older classical techniques, have been used to examine polymers and their additive systems. As so many different polymers are now used commercially it is also advisable when attempting to identify a polymer to classify it by first separating it into pure polymeric and gross non polymeric fractions (Chapter Z) and then carrying out at least a qualitative elemental analysis and possible a quantitative analysis (Chapters 3 and 4) and then in some cases, depending on the elements found, to carry out functional group analysis (Chapters 6 and 9).

Book excerpt: This book makes Hazardous or Electrical Area Classification simple. In plants processing flammable materials, every effort is made to avoid the escape of such materials and in addition, stringent measures are taken to exclude sources of ignition. A complex array of standards surround this topic which has lead to an overly conservative approach being taken. This type of approach means that much more expensive electrical apparatus than is necessary is installed. To avoid this unnecessary expenditure, Dr Groh clearly explains the relevant standards, so that accurate assessment of the risks associated with hazardous areas is possible. He also identifies possible ignition sources and methods of designing apparatus which do not cause sparks thereby maintaining safety.* Covers must-have information regarding IEC/CENELEC standards in electrical or hazardous area classification* Provides a clear overview of a complex area

Book excerpt: Plastics are high-performance materials of wide use in the built environment. Their versatile technical properties are particularly fascinating. A broad range of form-giving and finishing processes makes plastic especially interesting for complex geometries in combination with digital planning processes. Following the pioneering plastic structures of the 1970s, a number of spectacular buildings have in recent years highlighted the outstanding technical and aesthetic potential of the material. Until now, however, there has been no systematic treatment of the use of plastic in architecture. This book seeks to fill that gap by providing an introduction to the structural and design possibilities of plastic. It introduces the material and its specific characteristics, describes various types of plastic in terms of their relevance for building, explains processing technologies and presents typical products and components. A concise presentation of twenty-five international built projects – organized by the type of application and the plastic involved – documents the broad range of plastic in architecture. Finally, a look ahead at the future describes the current state of the art in materials research.
