Book Synopsis The Power of Picture Books in Teaching Math and Science by : Lynn Columbia
Download or read book The Power of Picture Books in Teaching Math and Science written by Lynn Columbia and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-05-12 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book's 50-plus lessons-each based on a different picture book or story-will help classroom teachers build a foundation for teaching math, science, and social studies concepts to their students. Each lesson uses children's literature to make challenging, abstract concepts relevant to children's lives, inviting them to learn these concepts while responding to a story's illustrations, theme, characters, and plot. The lessons also demonstrate how teachers can use children's literature to meet national standards in math, science, and social studies. Chapters 1 through 5 set the stage for using picture books, discussing the effective, imaginative integration of literature into the classroom. Teachers will learn to create an environment that ensures that when children and books come together, the experience is enjoyable and thought provoking. Chapters 6 through 9 provide individual lessons, by grade level, with detailed activities based on specific books.
Book Synopsis The Well-Tuned Brain: The Remedy for a Manic Society by : Peter C. Whybrow
Download or read book The Well-Tuned Brain: The Remedy for a Manic Society written by Peter C. Whybrow and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2015-05-18 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this optimistic and inspiring book, Peter Whybrow, the prize-winning author of American Mania, returns to offer a prescription for genuine human progress. The Well-Tuned Brain is a call to action. Swept along by the cascading advances of today’s technology, most of us take for granted that progress brings improvement. Despite spectacular material advance, however, the evidence grows that we are failing to create a sustainable future for humanity. We are out of tune with the planet that nurtures us. Technology itself is not the problem, as Whybrow explains, but rather our behavior. Throughout its evolution the ancient brain that guides us each day has been focused on short-term survival. But fortunately we are intensely social creatures. Without the caring behaviors that flow from intimate attachments to others, we would be relying on a brain that is only marginally adapted to the complexity of the problems we must now face together. Today we must grapple with survival, not in its immediacy but over the long term. The first step in finding our way forward is to reexamine who we are as creatures of this planet. To this end, Whybrow takes us on a fascinating tour of self-discovery, drawing extensively upon his decades of experience as a psychiatrist and his broad knowledge of neuroscience and human behavior. Illustrated throughout with engaging personal stories, the book’s trove of cutting-edge science is enriched by philosophical, historical, and cultural perspectives. What emerges is a summons to rediscover the essential virtues of earlier nurturing, of mentored education, and an engagement with the natural world through curiosity and imagination. Neuroscience can open the search for a better future. But technology alone will not save us. To achieve success we will need the strength and wisdom of our better nature as humane social beings.

Download or read book Principles of Inpatient Psychiatry written by Fred Ovsiew and published by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. This book was released on 2008-11-01 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Principles of Inpatient Psychiatry is geared to psychiatrists working in inpatient settings: residents, psychiatrists who occasionally provide inpatient care, and psychiatric "hospitalists" who specialize in the inpatient arena. Inpatient settings contain the sickest psychiatric patients, such as those with a high risk of suicide, agitation requiring emergency management, or treatment-resistant psychosis and depression, all topics discussed in the book. Co-morbid general-medical illness is common, and the book focuses attention, supported by case examples, on medical and neuropsychiatric as well as general-psychiatric evaluation and management. Chapters address special clinical problems, including first-episode psychosis, substance abuse, eating disorders, and legal issues on the inpatient service. The editors bring expertise to bear on a wide range of treatments, including psychopharmacologic, psychodynamic, and milieu approaches.
Book Synopsis Szycher's Dictionary of Medical Devices by : Michael Szycher
Download or read book Szycher's Dictionary of Medical Devices written by Michael Szycher and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-12 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FROM THE PREFACE The field of medical devices represents one of the most advanced technological areas in the United States. In 1991, over 12 million Americans had at least one medical device; fixation devices had the highest incidence, followed by contact lens use and lens implants and, lastly, artificial joints. The public has come to expect that medical devices will alleviate maladies and/or conditions that were not treatable fifty years ago. It is hard to believe that the first pacemaker was invented in the 1950s, the first artificial heart valve in 1952, and the first artificial hip replacement was performed in 1954. In 1992, the medical device industry exported a total of $6.9 billion, while the country imported a total of $3.9 billion, representing a $3.0 billion trade surplus. Medical devices are among the most regulated products in the world. The FDA maintains a constant vigil over medical device manufacturers and importers; even medical device definitions are subject to official scrutiny. Title 21 of the Code of Federal Regulations publishes these definitions, but the definitions are spread over several medical specialty areas and are, thus, difficult to find. This book attempts to bring a measure of order by providing an alphabetical listing of officially defined devices.
