Book excerpt: Showcasing some of the most recognized and dynamic examples of aviation art ever produced, the paintings here appeared on model airplane kit boxes. Generations of hobbyists have enjoyed these colorful and inspiring paintings that graced model packaging in hobby shops. More than 170 of the most memorable examples are displayed in full color. They chronicle aviation history from the Wright Brothers' Kitty Hawk Flier to the Apollo Lunar Module, including many of the best-known aircraft in aviation history. Among the many artists whose works are portrayed are Tom Morgan, John Steel, Jack Leynnwood, Lorenzo Ghiglieri, Jim Cox, John Amendola, Ray Gaedke, Jo Kotula, and Dick Locher. In the well-researched text, these artists tell personal stories behind their art in their own words. This book will be treasured by aviation enthusiasts, model builders, and everyone who has fond memories of their model building days.

Book excerpt: A follow up to the hugely popular first publication of Russian Air Power in 2009, Yefim Gordon and Dmitriy Komissarov bring readers the fully updated and revised new edition. The original volume was the first comprehensive survey published on all the Russian Air Forces and was the result of Yefim Gordon's unrivalled access to information on Russian air forces. Since the first edition was published Russia has undergone a complete restructuring of its air forces. The previous edition of Russian Air Power described the Russian Air Force's post-Soviet organisation, order of battle and, to a certain extent, the types in Russian Air Force service. In the course of the 20 years that have had elapsed since the demise of the Soviet Union the Russian Air Force and Russian Naval Aviation have had repeatedly been reformed; still, the Russian government was not happy with the results. The Russian President voiced his dissatisfaction with the Air Force's performance especially strongly after the August 2008 operation in the Caucasus whose aim was to 'compel Georgia to peace'. The many reforms of the Russian aircraft industry, too, have failed to yield the desired results. Therefore, the Russian political leaders and military top brass took the decision in 2009 to launch yet another reform of the Russian Armed Forces, including the Air Force. The new Air Force organisation is to improve the control of first-line units by eliminating superfluous and inefficient links in the chain of command. In 2009 the customary air armies, air divisions and air regiments were replaced by aviation bases, each of which comprises two or three squadrons operating a single type or several types of aircraft. In the course of reorganisation a sizeable number of airbases (military airfields) were transferred to the Air Force reserve and are presently unoccupied. Many air regiments were disbanded, their personnel and aircraft being transferred to other aviation bases. Each aviation base has its unique number and is a direct reporting unit. Moreover, in late 2008 the Russian Air Force started fielding new aircraft and helicopter types. The long-awaited maiden flight of the Sukhoi T-50 (alias PAK FA) – Russia's fifth-generation fighter – took place in late January 2010. The Russian Air Force has a lot riding on this aircraft; some defence analysts believe that the T-50 outperforms the Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor in several parameters. The Russian Navy has ordered the new MiG-29K/MiG-29KUB shipboard fighter to complement the Su-33; for the Russian Air Force's strategic arm, funding has been allocated for further work on the PAK DA, a new bomber that is to be far superior to both the Russian Tu-160 and the American B-2. Following a re structuring to Russian's air forces, Yefim Gordon and Dmitriy Komissarov provide readers with a fully revised and updated new edition of the popular Russian Air Power. The title will include any updates made since the publication of the first edition and provide a true picture of Russian Air Power and forces today. The new book will describe all the changes that have taken place in the Russian Air Force. The contents are completely revised and packed with extensive detail, photographs and colour artworks.

Book excerpt: No single human invention has transformed war more than the airplane—not even the atomic bomb. Even before the Wright Brothers’ first flight, predictions abounded of the devastating and terrible consequences this new invention would have as an engine of war. Soaring over the battlefield, the airplane became an unstoppable force that left no spot on earth safe from attack. Drawing on combat memoirs, letters, diaries, archival records, museum collections, and eyewitness accounts by the men who fought—and the men who developed the breakthrough inventions and concepts—acclaimed author Stephen Budiansky weaves a vivid and dramatic account of the airplane’s revolutionary transformation of modern warfare. In addition to more than 60 original fine art paintings of significant moments in aviation history are the dramatic and compelling personal stories of 30 renowned airmen who blazed new trails and accomplished many significant 'firsts' in American skies. Names like Chuck Yeager, Scott Crossfield, Pete Everest, and Joe Engle grace this list. Add pilots like "Fitz" Fulton, Jack Broughton, and "Tex" Johnston, and you have a veritable "Who's Who" of America's greatest aviation legends. This book gives readers a special "behind-the-scenes" look at the actual process of how aviation art is made. Many projects are shown from the very first "back-of-the-napkin" sketch to the complex developmental steps leading to final engineering drawings and finished paintings. If you've ever wondered how aviation art is created, this book not only explains the process in detail, but shows how the pilots contribute to finished artwork as well. Through his award-winning artwork, Mike Machat has documented aviation for the past 40 years in ways never before seen, a process made possible by flying in many of the aircraft he painted, and developing life-long personal friendships with pilots of the aircraft he has preserved for history.

Book excerpt: This history follows the development of the Office of the Secretary of the Air Force from its predecessor organization -the Assistant Secretary of War for Air during World War II-to its modem identity as one of three service secretariats within the Department of Defense. Watson vividly describes the influence of several Air Secretaries: Robert A. Lovett, W. Stuart Symington, Harold E. Talbott, and Eugene M Zuckert. Each made a personal contribution in defining and answering the military issues of the day, among them, the independence of the Air Force, the war in Korea, arguments over roles and missions, and nuclear strategy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In February 1999, only a few weeks before the U.S. Air Force spearheaded NATO's Allied Force air campaign against Serbia, Col. C.R. Anderegg, USAF (Ret.), visited the commander of the U.S. Air Forces in Europe. Colonel Anderegg had known Gen. John Jumper since they had served together as jet forward air controllers in Southeast Asia nearly thirty years earlier. From the vantage point of 1999, they looked back to the day in February 1970, when they first controlled a laser-guided bomb strike. In this book Anderegg takes us from "glimmers of hope" like that one through other major improvements in the Air Force that came between the Vietnam War and the Gulf War. Always central in Anderegg's account of those changes are the people who made them. This is a very personal book by an officer who participated in the transformation he describes so vividly. Much of his story revolves around the Fighter Weapons School at Nellis Air Force Base (AFB), Nevada, where he served two tours as an instructor pilot specializing in guided munitions.

Book excerpt: Airpower is not widely understood. Even though it has come to play an increasingly important role in both peace and war, the basic concepts that define and govern airpower remain obscure to many people, even to professional military officers. This fact is largely due to fundamental differences of opinion as to whether or not the aircraft has altered the strategies of war or merely its tactics. If the former, then one can see airpower as a revolutionary leap along the continuum of war; but if the latter, then airpower is simply another weapon that joins the arsenal along with the rifle, machine gun, tank, submarine, and radio. This book implicitly assumes that airpower has brought about a revolution in war. It has altered virtually all aspects of war: how it is fought, by whom, against whom, and with what weapons. Flowing from those factors have been changes in training, organization, administration, command and control, and doctrine. War has been fundamentally transformed by the advent of the airplane.
