Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Control of Bovine Tuberculosis: A Paper Before Section VII. Of the International Congress on Tuberculosis, at Washington, D. C., October 1, 1908 Close attention to and observation of the animals undergoing the test are, in my opinion, indispensable. Even with them it is possible for mistakes to be made; with out them the tuberculin test is very apt to be badly discredited. The older veterinarians here will recollect that, prior to the discovery of tuber culin, much attention was paid, both by teachers and practitioners. To the clinical diagnosis of bovine tuberculosis. Of late years this phase of practice has been almost entirely lost sight of, the younger men practically depending on tuberculin as a diag nostic. This state of affairs is regrettable and should be remedied by cultivating, with regard to cases of tuberculosis, that habit of painstaking observation which alone makes for success in the diagnosis of most of the other maladies to which dumb animals are subject. I might perhaps explain that the foregoing remarks on the necessity of care and exactitude in making tests are intended to emphasize the idea that only skillful and Specially trained men can with safety be employed in this work, no small difficulty in itself, when it comes to undertaking a universal and compulsory testing policy. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bovine Tuberculosis All species of domestic animals are susceptible to tuberculosis but the disease is more prevalent in cattle, hogs and poultry than in other farm animals. Tuberculosis is readily transmitted from one individual to another of the same species by direct or indirect contact. On the other hand, transmission between species varies because of the existence of three more or less distinct types of tubercle bacilli, the human, the bovine and the avian. In general, tuberculosis found in cattle is induced by the bovine tubercle bacillus. However, local, non-progressive lesions have been produced experimentally in cattle by the human type, and rare cases of small, limited lesions due to natural infection with this type have been found also in this species. Cases of uterine infection of cattle with avian tuberculosis have been reported in Denmark. Tuberculosis in poultry has been found' to be caused by the avian type of tubercle bacillus in 100 percent of all cases studied. Hogs contract tuberculosis easily when fed on infected milk or when run ning in fields with tuberculous cattle or poultry. The disease induced in swine by the bovine bacillus is often fatal, but infection with the avian bacillus very seldom becomes progressive in swine, the lesions being limited usually to the lymph nodes of the head and neck. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Significance of Bovine Tuberculosis and Its Eradication and Prevention in Canada This rise in percentage of tuberculous cattle seen in the slaughter houses at Leipzig from per cent. To per cent. In seven years is veritably appalling, and no other explanation can be afforded than that the disease, in Germany at least, is spreading with terrible rapidity. So much indeed is this the case that competent authorities there are of Opinion that in a few years there will be no breeding herds left unaffected. If, '1n place of the slaughter -house statistics, we take those afforded by the tuberculin test, the percentage of cases found 1n animals other than yearlings 's yet higher than those afforded by the slaughter-houses. In Germany and Denmark veterinarians have come to the conclusion that the amount of tuberculosis is over 50 per cent. Of all the animals in the land, many large farms being found without a single sound animal. In other words, about half the animals in northern and western Europe would seem to be afflicted with tuberculosis. Corresponding statistics for Britain do not exist, nevertheless the conditions there, it would seem, are scarcely if at all more favorable. Thus in the County of Midlothian, abbatoir statistics show the existence of the disease in 22 per cent. Of the animals slaughtered, in Yorkshire a percentage of Durham and in London 25 per cent. These, be it remembered, are slaughter house results and not those derived from the tuberculin test. In fact, tuberculosis among the most valuable and most highly bred herds is so extensive that extreme precautions should be taken and stringent contracts made by the buyer as well as stringent regula tions framed and carried out by the Government to insure that, however great the cost of the individual cow or bull imported, the animal be found perfectly sound and unaffected by the disease before it is permitted to enter the country. Personally, though in this I speak in no official capacity, I am inclined to think that, taking into consideration the fact that if once an animal has been inoculated with tuberculin it may not give a second reaction until more than a month has elapsed, I would urge that all cattle imported for breeding purposes be kept in quarantine for six weeks at least, and only permitted to be delivered to owners in this country if at the end of that period they fail to react. Otherwise, by any other course, there is a distinct danger that the disease may be introduced into herds previously quite free from the disease. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book provides the first critical history of the controversy over whether to cull wild badgers to control the spread of bovine tuberculosis (bTB) in British cattle. This question has plagued several professional generations of politicians, policymakers, experts and campaigners since the early 1970s. Questions of what is known, who knows, who cares, who to trust and what to do about this complex problem have been the source of scientific, policy, and increasingly vociferous public debate ever since. This book integrates contemporary history, science and technology studies, human-animal relations, and policy research to conduct a cross-cutting analysis. It explores the worldviews of those involved with animal health, disease ecology and badger protection between the 1970s and 1990s, before reintegrating them to investigate the recent public polarisation of the controversy. Finally it asks how we might move beyond the current impasse.

Book excerpt: In recent years nobody could have failed to notice the frequent and often sensati- alist media headlines warning of the latest global disease threat to humankind. But behind all the hyperbole lie real challenges related to dealing with the increasing incidence of emerging zoonotic disease events, the majority of which are thought to originate in wildlife (Jones et al. 2008). There are also many important diseases of domestic livestock which also occur in wildlife (e. g. foot and mouth disease and classical swine fever in wild boar, bovine tuberculosis in deer, badgers or possums), some of which can have a devastating impact on the farming industry, the wider rural economy and ultimately the public purse. But we should also not forget that wildlife diseases may have serious implications for the conservation of biodiversity. For some of the rarest, most endangered species (such as the Ethiopian wolf) d- ease may pose the greatest threat to their survival. If we are to avoid or reduce these impacts then we must improve our ability to detect and manage the risks associated with disease in wildlife populations. This is a challenge that will require expertise from many different disciplines: veterinary, ecological, medical, economic, poli- cal and zoological. In such an interdisciplinary field it is difficult to stay up to date with contemporary ideas and with techniques that may be rapidly evolving.
