Book excerpt: Correlations of the transport property estimates of NASA TR R-50 are employed to determine locally similar solutions of the laminar boundary-layer equations for air in chemical equilibrium. Exact solutions for flat-plate flow, axisymmetric stagnation flow, and stagnation flow for yawed infinite cylinder are obtained, and a correlation formula for the heat-transfer distribution function for arbitrary favorable pressure gradient is determined. Extension to three-dimensional flows with small cross flow is briefly described.

Book excerpt: In order to provide a relatively simple heat-transfer prediction along a nozzle, a differential (similar-solution) analysis for the turbulent boundary layer is developed. This analysis along with a new correlation for the turbulent Prandtl number gives good agreement of the predicted with the measured heat transfer in the throat and supersonic regiono f the nozzle. Also, the boundary-layer variables (heat transfer, etc. ) can be calculated at any arbitrary location in the throat or supersonic region of the nozzle in less than a half minute of computing time (Lewis DCS 7094-7044).

This book was released on 1979 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of complex lifting configurations and high speed maneuvering vehicles has emphasized the need for numerical techniques to predict aerodynamic heating rates as a function of the vehicle trajectory. These numerical programs are not expected to eliminate the requirements for wind tunnel and flight testing, but will be an aid to more efficient use of experimentation time and improve confidence that all potential problem areas on the vehicle have been examined. Three programs, the Hypersonic Arbitrary Body Program, the MINIVER Program, and a third program were examined to determine their usefulness for vehicles with non-circular cross sections and large flat areas as exemplified by lifting reentry vehicles. The MINIVER code was found to be unsuitable for this; the Hypersonic Arbitrary Body Program was applicable to these shapes, but because of program limitations was used for only limited calculations. The last program also had limitations in the areas of geometry description and surface pressure calculations. Efforts were made to remove these limitations and several shapes were investigated. The ultimate goal of this effort was to extend the capabilities of one or more of the heating codes; while no effort was made to improve MINIVER or the Hypersonic Arbitrary Body Program, significant improvements were made in the last program and inviscid flow field program.

This book was released on 1969 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A second-order time-asymptotic solution to radiation-coupled stagnation-region flows is presented. The solution is applied to the hypervelocity flow over blunt vehicles of inviscid, nonconducting, equilibrium air, emitting and absorbing nongray radiation. Velocities, nose radii, and altitudes covered by the analysis are sufficient to bracket reentry trajectories of current interest. Radiative heat-transfer rates for the range of interest and typical profiles of pressure, density, enthalpy, temperature, and velocity are shown. The nature of time-asymptotic solution is discussed and it is shown o be a feasible means of achieving second-order accurate solutions to radiation-coupled shock-layer flows. Step-function models of the absorption coefficient are used in order to evaluate the divergence of the radiation flux vector. An analysis is carried out to determine what effect variations in the spectral complexity of the step model absorption coefficients used in the analysis will have on the thermodynamic and flow profiles of interest and on the nongray radiative heat-transfer rates. In this connection use is made of consistent model absorption coefficients having one to nine spectral steps with free-free, free-bound (including atomic line transitions), and molecular transitions taken into account. Relatively simple models of the absorption coefficient can be used with no significant loss of accuracy. An existing correlation for the cooling factor, the ratio of the radiation heat-transfer rate to the adiabatic radiation heat-transfer rate, is extended to larger velocities than heretofore considered.

Book excerpt: Developing a new treatment of ‘Free Convection Film Flows and Heat Transfer’ began in Shang’s first monograph and is continued in this monograph. The current book displays the recent developments of laminar forced convection and forced film condensation. It is aimed at revealing the true features of heat and mass transfer with forced convection film flows to model the deposition of thin layers. The novel mathematical similarity theory model is developed to simulate temperature- and concentration- dependent physical processes. The following topics are covered in this book: 1. Mathematical methods - advanced similarity analysis method to replace the traditional Falkner-Skan type transformation - a novel system of similarity analysis and transformation models to overcome the difficult issues of forced convection and forced film flows - heat and mass transfer equations based on the advanced similarity analysis models and equations formulated with rigorous key numerical solutions 2. Modeling the influence of physical factors - effect of thermal dissipation on forced convection heat transfer - a system of models of temperature and concentration-dependent variable physical properties based on the advanced temperature-parameter model and rigorous analysis model on vapor-gas mixture physical properties for the rigorous and convenient description of the governing differential equations - an available approach to satisfy interfacial matching conditions for rigorous and reliable solutions - a system of numerical results on velocity, temperature and concentration fields, as well as, key solutions on heat and mass transfer - the effect of non-condensable gas on heat and mass transfer for forced film condensation. This way it is realized to conveniently and reliably predict heat and mass transfer for convection and film flows and to resolve a series of current difficult issues of heat and mass transfer with forced convection film flows. Professionals in this fields as well as graduate students will find this a valuable book for their work.
