Book excerpt: A complete discussion is presented of the chemically reacting laminar boundary layer. Included in the study are separate homogeneous and hetergeneous reactions; additionally there is considered the problem of simultaneous gas phase and wall reaction. The basic solution, under conditions of unit transport properties, i.e., mass densityviscosity product constant, Prandtl number and Schmidt unity, were derived using previous devised operator techniques. For gas phase reaction the solution for the species distribution is seen to reduce to an integral equation; the temperature arising by quadrature. It is shown that simple first order results for chemistry of the usual complexity occuring in hypersonic boundary layer flows can be obtained without resort to large scale computation. The flow over a catalytic wall are derived from unit solutions to the basic problem. Using the present techniques any distribution of wall catalycity is permissable including discontinuities. Results of this analysis are shown to agree well with previous solutions. In all cases extension to non-unity transport properties are presented. Except in limited studies these extensions are not carried out because analyticity of all solutions was desired. Since no previous solution to the combined problem are available, new first order results were obtained corresponding to the leading edge solution. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This analysis is concerned with the essential features of the chemical interaction between a gaseous boundary layer and sublimed or ablated material from a body surface or gas injected through a porous wall. These effects are in addition to the "blowing" effect of the gas added to the boundary layer. The models studied are those for which the diffusion coefficients of all species are equal, the "frozen" Prandtl and Lewis moduli are taken as unity, and reactions proceed at an infinite rate. Solutions are given for three problems: (1) a diffusion-limited irreversible reaction, typified by the oxidation of carbon to carbon monoxide; (2) a temperature-limited irreversible reaction, such as dissociation without recombination; and (3) a temperature-limited reversible reaction including complete dissociation and recombination within the boundary layer.

This book was released on 1961 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of heterogeneous and homogenous chemical reactions upon compressible laminar boundary layer heat transfer are treated. The boundary layer equations including the species conservation equations are reduced to a set of ordinary differential equations using the method of Li and Nagamatsu for seeking similar solutions. The reduced equations are then solved for the special case of frozen gas phase reactions assuming that heterogeneous and homogenous reactions occur at the surface. The effects of density and transport properties variation due to the temperature and mixture composition variation in the boundary layer are taken into account. A general expression for surface heat transfer rate is then derived which accounts for the effects of the mass transfer accompanying the heterogeneous surface reactions and the heats of reaction. This book was released on 1958 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A review is presented of esse tial features of differ ntial equations applicable in t e boundary layer with mass tr nsfer at the wall, including consideration of chemical reactions. A brief deriv tion is given and the equations are presented in the alternate forms u eful for various applications. PECI L DISCUSSION IS GIV OF THE WALL BOUND RY CONDITION BECAUSE OF PO IBL CO FU ION ARISING FROM EFFECTS OF MASS TRANSFER AT THE WALL. A GENERAL SOLUTION TO THESE EQUATIONS IS OBTAINED WHICH MAK S IT PO SIBL TO DET RMINE THE HEAT TRANSFER POTENTIALS, SUBJECT ONLY TO THE REQUIREMENT THAT Lewis Mo uli equal u ity for ll po ibl boundary layer chemical reactions; o limitation is placed on reaction rates or other details of the reaction, or on the Prandtl Modulus. In the limiti g case where reactions go to completion the po ential may be written directly. As examples, solutions are pres nted for the case of combustion of carbon to CO and for the dissociation and recombination within the boundary layer of an injected material. (Author).
