Book excerpt: Theoretical and numerical studies of laminar jet diffusion flames have been conducted in the limit of infinitely fast chemistry for unity oxygen Lewis number LO = 1, providing information on flame shapes and flame temperatures for different reactant-feed dilution, fuel Lewis number LF, and coflow-to-jet velocity ratios U0. Shvab-Zel'dovich coupling functions are used to write the conservation equations for planar and axisymmetric jet flames in the boundary-layer approximation. Specific consideration is given to the mixing-layer solution near the injector rim, where differential-diffusion effects are seen to result in the expected superadiabatic/subadiabatic temperature for LF smaller/larger than 1. These effects are more pronounced for U0 = 0 and at intermediate values of Zs. The evolution of the temperature along the flame is found to exhibit an unexpected behavior, in that irrespective of the dilution and coflow velocity the flame temperature always transitions from superadiabatic to subadiabatic when LF 1 and from subadiabatic to superadiabatic for LF 1. The variation with LF of the flame shape relative to the enthalpy eld is reasoned as the cause for the observed transition. Additional computations are performed for inverse diffusion flames with LO = 1 and LF ~= 1. These do not exhibit reversed differential-diffusion behaviors, indicating that the diffusivity of the abundant (co-flow) reactant is less critical than that of the deficient (central-jet) reactant.

Book excerpt: The paper discusses the laminar diffusion flame: a combustion process which occurs in a region which is located in the mixing zone between the undiluted fuel and the undiluted oxidizer and in which the mixing is carried out by molecular diffusion only. The boundary layer similar solutions are presented for the relevant distributions of the physical properties and species concentrations in a planar laminar jet diffusion flame.

Book excerpt: A jet diffusion flame attached to a burner rim may lift off and become stabilized further downstream when the jet velocity is sufficiently increased. In turbulent jet diffusion flames, such liftoff has been described alternately as the result of a stabilized premixed flame base, and as the result of extinguished diffusion flamelets at the flame base. Laminar flames exhibit liftoff behavior as well, and possess a relatively simpler flame structure which may be studied to provide insight into the basic mechanism responsible for flame lift. In the present study, an asymptotic solution and a numerical solution of a reduced set of equations are used to study the lifted structure of a laminar diffusion flame associated with a fuel jet. The numerical model solves a temperature equation with a finite chemical reaction rate. The asymptotic analysis is based on a flame-sheet model in the limit of large activation energy and large Damkoehler number. While it is likely that premixing at the flame base affects the structure of a lifted flame, the current analysis suggests that local extinction of the flame at its base is a contributing mechanism to flame lift.

In most of the flames of practical interest, the reaction zone is of negligible thickness, making it possible to obtain a solution of the boundary layer type. At each side of the reaction zone the temperature and concentration distributions may be determined by using the Burke-Schumann assumption of infinitely fast reaction rate. In the reaction zone, or chemical boundary layer, the convection effects may be neglected as compared with chemical reaction, conduction and diffusion effects. The equations governing this layer take then a simple for ; and from their solution a criterium for the validity of BurkeSchumann assumption and for flame extinction may be obtained. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The structure of laminar diffusion flames is analyzed in the limiting case of large, although finite, reaction rates. It is shown that the chemical reaction takes place only in a very thin region or chemical boundary layer where convection effects may be neglected. Then the temperature and mass fraction distributions within the reaction zone are obtained analytically. The flame position, rates of fuel consumption, and temperature and concentration distributions outside of the reaction zone may be obtained by using the assumption of infinite reaction rates. For large Reynolds numbers mixing and combustion take place in boundary layers and free mixing layers. And again analytical solutions are obtained for the temperature and mass fraction distributions outside of the reaction zone. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The near field lift-off phenomena associated with jet diffusion flames were investigated. Lift-off is defined as the instant when the luminous flame zone detaches from the burner exit, stabilizing itself downstream. The lift-off of the jet diffusion flames were studied using a fuel jet centered in a large coflowing air annulus. Fuels used consisted of methane and propane. The fuels are diluted with nitrogen, argon, and helium. Annulus, diluted fuel, and external nozzle geometry effects are studied for the jet diffusion flame. The jet diffusion flame is sensitive to the annulus velocity, the lift-off velocity decreasing with increasing annular velocity. Lift-off velocity decreases as dilution concentrations of the fuel jet increase. The external geometry effects influence the lift-off velocity, especially at higher annular flow rates. Two theories have explained the lift-off of jet diffusion flames. The locally premixed theory which assumes that the fuel and oxidant are fully premixed prior to combustion. The lift-off of the flame zone occurs due to the convective velocity of the premixed reactants exceeding the local flame speed. The second theory, the laminar flamelet model, states that the diffusion of reactants into the flame zone exceeds the chemical reaction rate, causing the flame to extinguish at the flame base, lifting the flame from the nozzle to a position downstream. The two models were evaluated by the different lift-off velocities produced by annulus and diluent effects. Laser Doppler anemometry (LDA) was used to characterize the flow field at and near the base of the jet diffusion flame. The local straining rate across the flame was approximated by the gradient of the mean radial velocity in the radial direction for the pure and diluted methane conditions. The straining rate was in qualitative agreement with that reported in the literature for counter-flow methane diffusion flames near extinction.

Book excerpt: Using a Burke-Schumman modeled co-flow burner, a quartz chimney, and a pressure vessel with good optical access, the smoke points in pure and diluted fuels were measured in a laminar jet diffusion flame. Ethylene and methane, burning in a velocity matched, over-ventilated co-flow of air, were tested over the ranges of 1 to 8 atmospheres and 2 to 16 atmospheres, respectively. Various diluents (nitrogen, argon, helium, and carbon dioxide) were added individually to the pure fuels to observe the effects they have on the smoke points and the adiabatic flame temperatures at atmospheric and elevated pressures. These diluents were chosen to allow a wide range of flame temperatures and fuel Lewis numbers to be investigated. For a given fuel flow rate, the dilution level was increased until the flame ceased emitting visible soot (defined as the smoke point). The height of the flame was then measured and the adiabatic flame temperature was calculated based on equilibrium chemistry. While some previous research has focused on the effects of flame temperature (through dilution) on smoke points, the measurements reported here were made to investigate the effects of pressure, different diluents, and varying dilution rates on sooting tendency. The main findings of these experiments were: increasing the amount of diluent to a pure fuel increases the smoke point, the smoke point is a function of the air to fuel velocity ratio, smoke point is strongly dependent on the inverse of pressure, and residence time decreases with increases in pressure.
