Download or read book Boundary Issues written by Jane Adams and published by Turner Publishing Company. This book was released on 2010-12-07 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Jane Adams gets at the heart of human relationships by illuminating the boundaries that create and sustain them. Taking on a subject that everyone talks about but few people really understand, she breaks new psychological ground in this accessible, empathetic, and original book that offers concrete assistance and wise counsel to all who struggle with the central dilemma of being human—being both separate and connected, intimate as well as autonomous, without sacrificing the self." —Edward Hallowell, M.D., coauthor of Delivered from Distraction "Understanding and respecting our own boundaries and others' is at the core of a happy life. Boundary Issues is a terrific journey into our own psychological needs, strengths, and weaknesses. We could all save a lot of therapeutic intervention by reading and following Dr. Adams's observations and suggestions." —Pepper Schwartz, Ph.D., author of Love Between Equals: How Peer Marriage Really Works "All too rarely someone comes along who is able to turn a single phrase into a changed outlook on life. Dr. Jane Adams does that with Boundary Issues. By following Dr. Jane Adams's guidance and helpful exercises, each of us can find the freedom to love, work, negotiate, play, and live on our own terms." —Suzanne Braun Levine, author of Inventing the Rest of Our Lives: Women in Second Adulthood "I find this book vitally helpful, both personally and in my work as a psychotherapist. Learning to negotiate distance and intimacy is a huge issue for women who think that being joined at the hip is necessary for a relationship to survive." —Colette Dowling, author of The Cinderella Complex and You Mean I Don't Have to Feel This Way?
Book Synopsis Mathematical Foundations of Imaging, Tomography and Wavefield Inversion by : Anthony J. Devaney
Download or read book Mathematical Foundations of Imaging, Tomography and Wavefield Inversion written by Anthony J. Devaney and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-06-21 with total page 537 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inverse problems are of interest and importance across many branches of physics, mathematics, engineering and medical imaging. In this text, the foundations of imaging and wavefield inversion are presented in a clear and systematic way. The necessary theory is gradually developed throughout the book, progressing from simple wave equation based models to vector wave models. By combining theory with numerous MATLAB based examples, the author promotes a complete understanding of the material and establishes a basis for real world applications. Key topics of discussion include the derivation of solutions to the inhomogeneous and homogeneous Helmholtz equations using Green function techniques; the propagation and scattering of waves in homogeneous and inhomogeneous backgrounds; and the concept of field time reversal. Bridging the gap between mathematics and physics, this multidisciplinary book will appeal to graduate students and researchers alike. Additional resources including MATLAB codes and solutions are available online at www.cambridge.org/9780521119740.
Book Synopsis Blurring the Color Line by : Richard Alba
Download or read book Blurring the Color Line written by Richard Alba and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2012-03-05 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Alba argues that the social cleavages that separate Americans into distinct, unequal ethno-racial groups could narrow dramatically in the coming decades. In Blurring the Color Line, Alba explores a future in which socially mobile minorities could blur stark boundaries and gain much more control over the social expression of racial differences.
Book Synopsis Solid State Theory, Volume 1 by : Gerd Czycholl
Download or read book Solid State Theory, Volume 1 written by Gerd Czycholl and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-01-04 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The textbooks “Solid State Theory" give an introduction to the methods, contents and results of modern solid state physics in two volumes. This first volume has the basic courses in theoretical physics as prerequisites, i.e. knowledge of classical mechanics, electrodynamics and, in particular, quantum mechanics and statistical physics is assumed. The formalism of second quantization (occupation number representation), which is needed for the treatment of many-body effects, is introduced and used in the book. The content of the first volume deals with the classical areas of solid state physics (phonons and electrons in the periodic potential, Bloch theorem, Hartree-Fock approximation, density functional theory, electron-phonon interaction). The first volume is already suitable for Bachelor students who want to go beyond the basic courses in theoretical physics and get already familiar with an application area of theoretical physics, e.g. for an elective subject "Theoretical (Solid State) Physics" or as a basis for a Bachelor thesis. Every solid-state physicist working experimentally should also be familiar with the theoretical methods covered in the first volume. The content of the first volume can therefore also be the basis for a module "Solid State Physics" in the Master program in Physics or, together with the content of the 2nd volume, for a module "Theoretical Solid State Physics" or "Advanced Theoretical Physics". The following second volume covers application areas such as superconductivity and magnetism to areas that are current research topics (e.g. quantum Hall effect, high-temperature superconductivity, low-dimensional structures).

Book Synopsis Mathematical Aspects of Boundary Element Methods by : Marc Bonnet
Download or read book Mathematical Aspects of Boundary Element Methods written by Marc Bonnet and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1999-08-27 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Boundary element methods relate to a wide range of engineering applications, including fluid flow, fracture analysis, geomechanics, elasticity, and heat transfer. Thus, new results in the field hold great importance not only to researchers in mathematics, but to applied mathematicians, physicists, and engineers. A two-day minisymposium Mathematical Aspects of Boundary Element Methods at the IABEM conference in May 1998 brought together top rate researchers from around the world, including Vladimir Maz’ya, to whom the conference was dedicated. Focusing on the mathematical and numerical analysis of boundary integral operators, this volume presents 25 papers contributed to the symposium. Mathematical Aspects of Boundary Element Methods provides up-to-date research results from the point of view of both mathematics and engineering. The authors detail new results, such as on nonsmooth boundaries, and new methods, including domain decomposition and parallelization, preconditioned iterative techniques, multipole expansions, higher order boundary elements, and approximate approximations. Together they illustrate the connections between the modeling of applied problems, the derivation and analysis of corresponding boundary integral equations, and their efficient numerical solutions.

Book Synopsis Fundamentals of the Physics of Solids by : Jenö Sólyom
Download or read book Fundamentals of the Physics of Solids written by Jenö Sólyom and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-11-06 with total page 660 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reader is holding the second volume of a three-volume textbook on sol- state physics. This book is the outgrowth of the courses I have taught for many years at Eötvös University, Budapest, for undergraduate and graduate students under the titles Solid-State Physics and Modern Solid-State Physics. The main motivation for the publication of my lecture notes as a book was that none of the truly numerous textbooks covered all those areas that I felt should be included in a multi-semester course. Especially, if the course strives to present solid-state physics in a uni?ed structure, and aims at d- cussing not only classic chapters of the subject matter but also (in more or less detail) problems that are of great interest for today’s researcher as well. Besides, the book presents a much larger material than what can be covered in a two- or three-semester course. In the ?rst part of the ?rst volume the analysis of crystal symmetries and structure goes into details that certainly cannot be included in a usual course on solid-state physics. The same applies, among others, to the discussion of the methods used in the determination of band structure, the properties of Fermi liquids and non-Fermi liquids, and the theory of unconventional superconductors in the present and third volumes. These parts can be assigned as supplementary reading for interested students, or can be discussed in advanced courses.

Book Synopsis Beyond a Boundary by : Cyril Lionel Robert James
Download or read book Beyond a Boundary written by Cyril Lionel Robert James and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In C. L. R. James's classic Beyond a Boundary, the sport is cricket and the scene is the colonial West Indies. Always eloquent and provocative, James--the "black Plato," (as coined by the London Times)--shows us how, in the rituals of performance and conflict on the field, we are watching not just prowess but politics and psychology at play. Part memoir of a boyhood in a black colony (by one of the founding fathers of African nationalism), part passionate celebration of an unusual and unexpected game, Beyond a Boundary raises, in a warm and witty voice, serious questions about race, class, politics, and the facts of colonial oppression. Originally published in England in 1963 and in the United States twenty years later (Pantheon, 1983), this second American edition brings back into print this prophetic statement on race and sport in society.

Book Synopsis Operation Gatekeeper and Beyond by : Joseph Nevins
Download or read book Operation Gatekeeper and Beyond written by Joseph Nevins and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-06-10 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a major revision and update of Nevins’ earlier classic and is an ideal text for use with undergraduate students in a wide variety of courses on immigration, transnational issues, and the politics of race, inclusion and exclusion. Not only has the author brought his subject completely up to date, but as a "case" of increasing economic integration and liberalization along with growing immigration control, the US / Mexico Border and its history is put in a wider global context of similar development s elsewhere. A companion website is available at www.routledge.com/textbooks/9780415996945. The Companion Website contains key U.S. government documents related to the boundary and immigration enforcement strategy; reports from non-partisan research entities and non-governmental organizations that evaluate enforcement from a civil and human rights perspective; and studies that investigate migrant deaths in the U.S.-Mexico borderlands. There are also photo essays, including one related to deportations and another to California’s Border Field State Park, for which the site also includes historic photos and other resources. Finally, the site has links to websites—from U.S. government agencies involved in boundary and immigrant policing, to humanitarian and border, migrant, and human rights organizations.
