Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication updates the gender profile of Botswana published in 2000. It highlights the achievements and challenges facing the country in the quest for gender equality. It shows that despite the considerable achievements of one of African's most successful countries, poverty still disproportionately affects women, and gender is not sufficiently taken into account in mainstream policies and planning. It further assesses the progress of the country to improve gender equality in the context of the adoption of the Beijing Platform for Action and the SADC Gender and Development Declaration.

Book Synopsis The Potentiality of 'developmental States' in Africa by : Pamela Mbabazi
Download or read book The Potentiality of 'developmental States' in Africa written by Pamela Mbabazi and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2005 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Potentiality of 'Developmental States' in Africa investigates the potential role of the state in Africa in promoting development in this era of globalisation. Using Botswana and Uganda as case studies, the volume argues that it is not the amount of state involvement in the economy that matters, but the quality. This set of original studies compares and contrasts issues that distinguish the two countries' development record and style of activity of the state in promoting development. Written by a collection of researchers drawn mainly from Botswana and Uganda, this book argues that there are some elements of the developmental state model in both countries. These elements have arguably contributed to some of the relative successes in the two states. Contextualising the case studies within the history and political economy of the respective countries, the book is a valuable addition to the on-going debate on the role, nature and character of states in Africa. A must read for students, researchers, politicians and development practitioners. Book jacket.

Book Synopsis Women's Organizations and Democracy in South Africa by : Shireen Hassim
Download or read book Women's Organizations and Democracy in South Africa written by Shireen Hassim and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 2006-06-26 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The transition to democracy in South Africa was one of the defining events in twentieth-century political history. The South African women’s movement is one of the most celebrated on the African continent. Shireen Hassim examines interactions between the two as she explores the gendered nature of liberation and regime change. Her work reveals how women’s political organizations both shaped and were shaped by the broader democratic movement. Alternately asserting their political independence and giving precedence to the democratic movement as a whole, women activists proved flexible and remarkably successful in influencing policy. At the same time, their feminism was profoundly shaped by the context of democratic and nationalist ideologies. In reading the last twenty-five years of South African history through a feminist framework, Hassim offers fresh insights into the interactions between civil society, political parties, and the state. Hassim boldly confronts sensitive issues such as the tensions between autonomy and political dependency in feminists’ engagement with the African National Congress (ANC) and other democratic movements, and black-white relations within women’s organizations. She offers a historically informed discussion of the challenges facing feminist activists during a time of nationalist struggle and democratization. Winner, Victoria Schuck Award for best book on women and politics, American Political Science Association “An exceptional study, based on extensive research. . . . Highly recommended.”—Choice “A rich history of women’s organizations in South African . . . . [Hassim] had observed at first hand, and often participated in, much of what she described. She had access to the informants and private archives that so enliven the narrative and enrich the analysis. She provides a finely balanced assessment.”—Gretchen Bauer, African Studies Review
Book Synopsis Women, Law and Human Rights by : Fareda Banda
Download or read book Women, Law and Human Rights written by Fareda Banda and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2005-10-04 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Africa, with its mix of statute, custom and religion is at the centre of the debate about law and its impact on gender relations. This is because of the centrality of the gender question and its impact on the cultural relativism debate within human rights. It is therefore important to examine critically the role of law, broadly constructed, in African societies. The book focuses on women's experiences in the family. This is because the lives of women continue to be lived out largely in the private domain, where the right to privacy is used to conceal unequal treatment of women which is justified by invoking 'custom' and 'tradition'. The book shows how law and its interpretation is used to disenfranchise women, resulting in their being deprived of land and other property which they may have helped to accumulate. It also considers issues of violence within the home, reproductive rights and examines the issue of female genital cutting. The role of women in development is explored as is their participation in politics and the NGO sector. A major theme of the book is a consideration of the linkages of constitutional and international human rights norms with local values. This is done using feminist tools of analysis. The book considers the provisions of the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and People's Rights on the Rights of Women which was adopted by the African Union in July 2003.
Book Synopsis Women Making Constitutions by : A. Dobrowolsky
Download or read book Women Making Constitutions written by A. Dobrowolsky and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-11-04 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides a timely and revealing account of women's constitutional strategies and struggles. It compares and contrasts the latest constitutional developments within the United Kingdom with women's past and present struggles in countries including Canada, the United States and South Africa. Through theoretical engagement and practical experiences, the contributors develop crucial arguments on the nature and effect of constitutional change, equality, women's rights and representation. This shows how women, through their words and deeds, have challenged and shaped the nature and forms of constitutionalism.
Book Synopsis Gender Justice, Citizenship and Development by : Maitrayee Mukhopadhyay
Download or read book Gender Justice, Citizenship and Development written by Maitrayee Mukhopadhyay and published by Zubaan. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although there have been notable gains for women globally in the last few decades, gender inequality and gender-based inequities continue to impinge upon girls' and women's ability to realize their rights and their full potential as citizens and equal partners in decision-making and development. In fact, for every right that has been established, there are millions of women who do not enjoy it. In this book, studies from Latin America and the Caribbean, the Middle East and North Africa, and sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia are prefaced by an introductory chapter that links current thinking on.
