It is not possible to provide specimens for every point in the work, nor is it always desirable to do so; for the beginning pupil may not be able to interest himself in the objects, and he may become immersed in details before he has arrived at any general view or reason of the subject. Great care must be exercised that the pupil is not swamped. Mere book work or memory stuffing is useless, and it may dwarf or divert the sympathies of active young minds. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Botany: For Beginners A Few words may be said to explain the origin of the work of which the present portion is a first instalment. In 1873 I was invited by the Science and Art Department to conduct a course of instruction in what is now the Normal School of Science at South Kensington. It was a condition of the undertaking that the instruction should be carried on continuously from day to day and throughout the working hours of each day. My friend Mr. Lawson, late Professor of Botany at Oxford, was so good as to give me his assistance. We had the use of Professor Huxley's convenient and well-appointed laboratory, and we determined to attempt a course of instruction which should embrace the leading morphological facts of every important type in the vegetable kingdom. We, in fact, resolved to adopt exactly the same plan of work as Professor Huxley in his own teaching had found convenient for the animal side of morphology. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alphabet of Botany, for the Use of Beginners I was about fifteen when I took my first botanical ramble with Withering's British Plants under my arm, and the fresh enthusiasm of youth to spur me onward in the path of knowledge. The day, I rocol lect, was one of the loveliest in what Coleridge so expressively calls the leafy month of June and I soon found a spot on the banks of the Ayr, where there were more flowers than it was possible for a mere beginner to master, even with a long summer's day at his command. I was delighted, however, to make out. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Practice for Beginners in Botany In order to make the study of botany more effective under the first head, it seems best to bring the student into imme diate contact with the object itself, in the laboratory; and not only that, but to avoid interposing apparatus, as far as possible, between the student and the object to be studied. For this purpose, the writer has practically confined his attention to the larger plants. Desiring also to cultivate, as far as possible, the ability to draw correct inferences from exact observations, the writer has deemed it best to consider the subject from a somewhat different point of view from that usually adopted, and has attempted to make the morphological study bear fruit in this direction. The great difficulty in most laboratory work is to make the students realize the significance of the morphological details. They may observe accurately and record their observations carefully, but what of that? The physiological significance is overlooked - even in many cases where experiments are used to illustrate physiological phenomena. That the plant is a living thing, is a fact that must be borne actively in mind, both by teacher and by student. The plant must obtain the materials for its support, and to do this it must compete with other plants; it must protect itself against or seek the aid of animals it must obtain the energy and materials to reproduce its kind, and endeavor to place its offspring where they may have a proper chance for development; and, destitute of a mind as it is, it exercises an ingenuity, so to speak, that is of no mean order. We must, then, think of the plant as a living, working, struggling being with a single object in life, viz. To reproduce its kind and every variation in structure, be it great or little, is to be examined to determine, if possible, its use or history. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Students' Text-Book of Botany When, some few years ago, it became necessary to revise the English Edition of the late Prof. Prantl's Lehrbuch der Botanik, it appeared to me that the requirements of English students would be more satisfactorily met if the scope of the work were so extended that, whilst retaining all that has made it of value to beginners, it might be more useful to those engaged in the advanced study of the science. With this object in view, the number of pages has been doubled by additions to all four parts of the book, but more especially to Part III. Dealing with the Classification of Plants. The student must actually see as much as possible of what is here brought to his notice. The book simply marshals in logical order the objects to be studied. No doubt some thing may be learned by a simple consecutive reading of the paragraphs of the book, but the young botanist should not be content to obtain all his facts at second hand; he must see with his own eyes all that may be seen.
