Book Synopsis Bose-Einstein Condensates in Magnetic Double Well Potentials by : Thorsten Schumm
Download or read book Bose-Einstein Condensates in Magnetic Double Well Potentials written by Thorsten Schumm and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents two realizations of magnetic double well potentials for Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) on atom chips. One approach utilizes static magnetic traps, created by current carrying micro wires, manipulating the atoms close to the chip surface. As in all other atom chip experiments, cold atom clouds are found to break up to pieces in the vicinity of the trapping structure. A careful study of the underlying magnetic potential could attribute this fragmentation to current deviations, caused by corrugation of the wire edges. To avoid this effect, a new fabrication technique (electron beam lithography, gold evaporation) was employed to create 700nm cross section wires of significantly improved quality. A BEC was created and successfully transferred to the sub-micron structure, generating the double well. The general qualification of the device could be demonstrated by splitting cold thermal atomic clouds. However, numerous technical problems do yet prevent us from performing the experiment with BECs. The second approach pursued in this thesis combines static magnetic traps with oscillating (RF) magnetic fields and realizes a double well in the emerging adiabatic dressed potential. This scheme can be realized far from the chip surface, fragmentation does not occur and Bose-Einstein condensates could be split successfully. We realize a matter wave interferometer by recombining the two clouds in free expansion. The arising interference patterns reveal a narrow distribution of the relative phase, indicating a coherent splitting process. We monitor the phase evolution throughout and after the splitting and control it by deliberately unbalancing the double well.

Download or read book Bose-Einstein Condensation in a Robust Microtrap -- the Combination of Wire Traps and Atom Chips written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the presented work, we report about the successful creation of a Rubidium Bose-Einstein condensate. We use so called magnetic wire traps, which are especially simple, as they consist out of a wire and a homogeneous bias field. These wire traps are especially suited for Bose-Einstein condensation. Furthermore complex trapping potentials to manipulate a Bose-Einstein condensate can be realized. We combine 'large' and small scale wire traps. The 'large' scale is realized with a massive copper structure, while for the small wire traps we use the so called atom chip. This combination is promising, because it allowed us to develop a condensation process in the copper structure, which is independent of the structures on the atom chip, and thus the exchange of the 'physics' area. First experiments with the Bose-Einstein condensate are presented and discussed in detail.

This book was released on 2017-04-27 with total page 663 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following an explosion of research on Bose–Einstein condensation (BEC) ignited by demonstration of the effect by 2001 Nobel prize winners Cornell, Wieman and Ketterle, this book surveys the field of BEC studies. Written by experts in the field, it focuses on Bose–Einstein condensation as a universal phenomenon, covering topics such as cold atoms, magnetic and optical condensates in solids, liquid helium and field theory. Summarising general theoretical concepts and the research to date - including novel experimental realisations in previously inaccessible systems and their theoretical interpretation - it is an excellent resource for researchers and students in theoretical and experimental physics who wish to learn of the general themes of BEC in different subfields.
Book Synopsis Bose-Einstein Condensation in Atomic Gases by : Società italiana di fisica
Download or read book Bose-Einstein Condensation in Atomic Gases written by Società italiana di fisica and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 664 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although first proposed by Einstein in 1924, Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) in a gas was not achieved until 1995 when, using a combination of laser cooling and trapping, and magnetic trapping and evaporation, it was first observed in rubidium and then in lithium and sodium, cooled down to extremely low temperatures. This book brought together many leaders in both theory and experiment on Bose-Einstein condensation in gases. Their lectures provided a detailed coverage of the experimental techniques for the creation and study of BEC, as well as the theoretical foundation for understanding the properties of this novel system. This volume provides the first systematic review of the field and the many developments that have taken place in the past three years.
Book Synopsis A Bose-Einstein Condensate Coupled to a Micromechanical Oscillator by : David Hunger

This book was released on 2010 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ultracold neutral atoms can be trapped and coherently manipulated close to a surface using chip-based magnetic microtraps. This opens the possibility of studying interactions between atoms and on-chip solid-state systems such as micro- and nanostructured mechanical oscillators. This thesis reports experiments, where a controlled coupling between a Bose-Einstein condensate and a micromechanical oscillator is realized for the first time. The interaction relies on surface forces experienced by the atoms trapped at about 1 micrometer distance from the mechanical structure. The surface forces are used to resonantly couple the mechanical motion of the oscillator to collective motion of the atoms. Coupling via surface forces does not require magnets, electrodes, or mirrors on the oscillator and could thus be employed to couple atoms to molecular-scale oscillators such as carbon nanotubes. In the long-term, the toolbox for quantum manipulation of ultracold atoms could be employed to read out, cool, and coherently manipulate the quantum state of a mechanical oscillator. The thesis discusses three different scenarios that could enable atom-oscillator coupling at the quantum level.

Book Synopsis Interferometry with Interacting Bose-Einstein Condensates in a Double-Well Potential by : Tarik Berrada
Download or read book Interferometry with Interacting Bose-Einstein Condensates in a Double-Well Potential written by Tarik Berrada and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-17 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis demonstrates a full Mach–Zehnder interferometer with interacting Bose–Einstein condensates confined on an atom chip. It relies on the coherent manipulation of atoms trapped in a magnetic double-well potential, for which the author developed a novel type of beam splitter. Particle-wave duality enables the construction of interferometers for matter waves, which complement optical interferometers in precision measurement devices, both for technological applications and fundamental tests. This requires the development of atom-optics analogues to beam splitters, phase shifters and recombiners. Particle interactions in the Bose–Einstein condensate lead to a nonlinearity, absent in photon optics. This is exploited to generate a non-classical state with reduced atom-number fluctuations inside the interferometer. This state is then used to study the interaction-induced dephasing of the quantum superposition. The resulting coherence times are found to be a factor of three longer than expected for coherent states, highlighting the potential of entanglement as a resource for quantum-enhanced metrology.
