Book excerpt: Borrowing Your Body is a collection of poems that focus on the duties of being a daughter, sister, partner, and how to survive grief, sickness, and the ails that plague a person. The collection explores the unknown and imagined worlds, the boundless edges of invention, and the creative leaps the brain can make. Tackling themes of illness, death, sorrow, and the vast universe, these poems remind us we are all human. Passin has written a book of the declining body, the disintegrating mind, the shredded remnants of what's left: glistening shards of language, the glowing soul, humor, beauty. Dorianne Laux, author of The Book of Men Laura Passin's gorgeous debut, Borrowing Your Body, is a heartfelt delving into the strange places where science ends and the human begins. This work considers the cyborg-ian qualities of how "Chemistry is what makes you not you anymore." I can't help but also hear the words burrow and bury tucked inside this title. Passin is deeply aware of the resonances here, how the defamiliarization of a loved one's body, speech, and identity opens into the space of the poetic, a space of multiplicity, a place where language is "stitching a name across the bone where my [our] thinking lives." Andrea Rexilius, author of Sister / Urn (Sidebrow Books) In Laura Passin's Borrowing Your Body, poetry is liquid gold that floods the gaps where words and memory fail. Charting the course of a mother's dementia, a brother's intellectual disability, and the pains of body and spirit, these poems unlock the door to inexpressible grief: "you need another tongue to tell it." Like kintsugi, the Japanese art of repairing pottery with gilt lacquer, Passin's forthright, self-aware poems restore what is broken by illuminating, not hiding, the cracks. These profound lyrical meditations on motherhood and daughterhood, memory and loss, pain and recovery empower with their courage while healing with their radiance. An extraordinary voice in extraordinary times, these poems will linger long after you've read the last page. "What billion eyes will blink at the light [she's] given back." Angela Narciso Torres, author of What Happens Is Neither (Four Way Books)

Book excerpt: Against a global backdrop of wartime suffering and postwar hope, Borrowing Life gathers the personal histories of the men and women behind the team that enabled and performed the modern medical miracle of the world's first successful organ transplant. "An extraordinary work. Shelley Fraser Mickle has not only provided a detailed, fascinating documentation of the world's first successful organ transplant, but she has also painted the lives of those involved--doctors, patients, family members--so vividly that the reader is completely enthralled and emotionally invested in their grieved losses as well as their successes. The result is a beautiful tribute to medical science as well as to humanity." Jill McCorkle, NYT bestselling author of Life After Life "Working with Dr. Moore, Dr. Murray and Dr, Vandam to create the painting commemorating their historic operation and the research leading up to it was the greatest adventure of my artistic career. Having my painting on the cover of Borrowing Life renews that excitement, for I know what grand adventure is waiting for the reader." Joel Babb, artist "I was so very pleased to be involved with Shelley as she wrote her captivating, compelling book. I only wish that Ron could be here with me to read it." Cynthia Herrick, wife of the first successful organ transplant donor "Had these men and women not worked diligently to save the life of Charles Woods, I and my 5 brothers and 3 sisters, would not have been born. Charles Woods and Miriam Woods are my parents. It is thrilling to read Ms Mickle's book as it closely mirrors the stories our dad and mom shared with us as children. The amazing thing is that as a disfigured war hero, our dad embraced his appearance as a badge of honor." David Woods Performed at Boston's Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in 1954, the first successful kidney transplant was the culmination of years of grit, compassion, and the pursuit of excellence by a remarkable medical team--Nobel Prize-winning surgeon Joseph Murray, his boss and fellow surgeon Francis Moore, and British scientist and fellow Nobel laureate Peter Medawar. Drawing on the lives of these members of the Greatest Generation, Borrowing Life creates a compelling narrative that begins in wartime and tracks decades of the ups and downs, personal and professional, of these inspiring men and their achievements, which continue to benefit humankind in so many ways.

Book excerpt: The instant USA Today bestseller! The first in a gripping new series by Paula Munier, A Borrowing of Bones is full of complex twists, introducing a wonderful new voice for mystery readers and dog lovers. Grief and guilt are the ghosts that haunt you when you survive what others do not.... After their last deployment, when she got shot, her fiancé Martinez got killed and his bomb-sniffing dog Elvis got depressed, soldier Mercy Carr and Elvis were both sent home, her late lover’s last words ringing in her ears: “Take care of my partner.” Together the two former military police—one twenty-nine-year-old two-legged female with wounds deeper than skin and one handsome five-year-old four-legged Malinois with canine PTSD—march off their grief mile after mile in the beautiful remote Vermont wilderness. Even on the Fourth of July weekend, when all of Northshire celebrates with fun and frolic and fireworks, it’s just another walk in the woods for Mercy and Elvis—until the dog alerts to explosives and they find a squalling baby abandoned near a shallow grave filled with what appear to be human bones. U.S. Game Warden Troy Warner and his search and rescue Newfoundland Susie Bear respond to Mercy’s 911 call, and the four must work together to track down a missing mother, solve a cold-case murder, and keep the citizens of Northshire safe on potentially the most incendiary Independence Day since the American Revolution. It’s a call to action Mercy and Elvis cannot ignore, no matter what the cost.

Book excerpt: In this first full-length English-language translation of the work of Helena Boberg, we are powerfully confronted with what she has called "a creative testimony that points out patterns of injustice, sexism, and violence" in the society we inhabit. A book-length poem, Sense Violence hinges on the dichotomy of a masculine will to power and a call to action for a feminine collective to confront it on all corners--from mythologies to cultural tropes and ingrained hierarchies. Translated by Johannes Göransson, the English edition faithfully captures Boberg's wordplay and linguistic richness bringing this urgent and uniquely-voiced work to a new audience.

But the time-honored practice of summoning a magical assistant has been mostly forsaken due to the false perception that it is both difficult and dangerous. Now, renowned occultist Donald Tyson shares his revolutionary system for safely and successfully summoning, directing, and dismissing a familiar. Accessible to dedicated beginners, these techniques do not require expertise in formal ritual, astrology, or the Kabalah. Revealed here for the first time is Tyson's unique system for generating spirit sigils based on a set of symbols called Power Glyphs. Familiars summoned by this method become valuable assistants who will do everything in their power to fulfill your goals.

Book excerpt: All three volumes of the occult classic available together as a deluxe boxed set for the first time Volume I includes translations of rare texts alongside rites, practices, and arcane magical knowledge Volume II offers studies of mystery traditions throughout history and shares authentic initiatic wisdom and a rigorous selection of initiatory exercises Volume III explores esoteric practices for individual development and realization of immortal and divine potential, handed down from a primordial tradition In 1927 Julius Evola and other leading Italian esotericists formed the mysterious UR group. The purpose of this group was to study and practice ancient rituals from the mystery traditions of the world, both East and West. They produced a monthly journal containing techniques for spiritual realization, initiatory exercises, magical rites, accounts of personal experiences, translations of ancient texts, and original essays on the occult. Many years later, in 1971, Evola gathered these essays into three volumes. Available together as a deluxe boxed set for the first time in English, these volumes present the steps necessary to purify the soul with the light of knowledge and the fire of dedication as well as allowing the reader to be liberated from conventional dogmas—religious, political, scientific, and psychological—and see with the clearer eye of realization.

Book excerpt: "I could have been born and raised in Africa. But my Spirit was in too much of a rush to be reincarnated...At six weeks I was chucked out into the new year of 1965 which wasn't prepared to welcome on African baby, abandoned on a harsh English winter's day." So begins Pauline's spirited and moving story of her childhood and teenage years in and out of foster homes and back and forth to Dr. Barnardo's Village in Essex. Her Barnardo's family was ruled by an unlikely trio--Aunty Claire, a fervent Christian; her laconic husband, the German Jewish Uncle Boris; and Aunty Morag, the cook. And, of course, other kids orphaned or abandoned like Pauline. Woven into this account are Pauline's angel and spirit companions--Sparky, Annabel and Snake-- who by turns help and hinder her to survive in the "real world." The Barnardo's good times are shattered by the sudden visits of her mother, whom she calls Wunmi and with whom she goes to live in a London high-rise. Wunmi's method of refashioning Pauline into a dutiful African child is literally to knock the English out of her. Pauline tries other ways to survive--sniffing glue and shoplifting--until the harsh realities of detention centres and juvenile courts make Pauline think again...

Book excerpt: Imagine life when God's Church has lost acceptance and the government only allows a new "church" structure that rejects the concept of a Biblical God. The purpose of the new churches is to help people attain peace in their lives. A world dictator has emerged who achieved peace by suppressing the former concepts of religion so that religious conflicts no longer exist. The world government uses virtual reality modules to mold the minds of citizens to accept this new structure and all known Christians are isolated. The main character is a scientist who achieves all that the world can offer but who still thinks something is missing. He and his friends initiate a search for "real" reality. As the story unfolds, choices must be made between the manufactured peace of this worldly existence and the dangers of declaring themselves Christians. Dr. Combs earned his Ph.D. in Chemical Physics from LSU and then taught chemistry and physics for 40 years. He is Professor and Head Emeritus at Mississippi State University and Professor and Chair Emeritus at Kennesaw State University. He has taught Sunday School classes for about 30 years in three different denominations. He currently is a member of a reformed Presbyterian church. He developed a web site, http: //LivingTheology.com which carries many of his Christian writings. This book began about 20 years ago as he observed how the church was losing its identity as God's Church and people attending such local churches seemed mainly interested in socializing and hearing sermons designed to make them feel better. He also observed how people were treating sports as religions. After retiring in July 2006 from KSU, he determined to finish this book since many of the futuristic aspects of the book are already appearing.
