Book Synopsis Being Modern in the Middle East by : Keith David Watenpaugh
Download or read book Being Modern in the Middle East written by Keith David Watenpaugh and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-12-19 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this innovative book, Keith Watenpaugh connects the question of modernity to the formation of the Arab middle class. The book explores the rise of a middle class of liberal professionals, white-collar employees, journalists, and businessmen during the first decades of the twentieth century in the Arab Middle East and the ways its members created civil society, and new forms of politics, bodies of thought, and styles of engagement with colonialism. Discussions of the middle class have been largely absent from historical writings about the Middle East. Watenpaugh fills this lacuna by drawing on Arab, Ottoman, British, American and French sources and an eclectic body of theoretical literature and shows that within the crucible of the Young Turk Revolution of 1908, World War I, and the advent of late European colonialism, a discrete middle class took shape. It was defined not just by the wealth, professions, possessions, or the levels of education of its members, but also by the way they asserted their modernity. Using the ethnically and religiously diverse middle class of the cosmopolitan city of Aleppo, Syria, as a point of departure, Watenpaugh explores the larger political and social implications of what being modern meant in the non-West in the first half of the twentieth century. Well researched and provocative, Being Modern in the Middle East makes a critical contribution not just to Middle East history, but also to the global study of class, mass violence, ideas, and revolution.
Book Synopsis VIETNAM: RIGHT? or WRONG? by : J. Randolph Maney Jr
Download or read book VIETNAM: RIGHT? or WRONG? written by J. Randolph Maney Jr and published by BookLocker.com, Inc.. This book was released on 2023-03-10 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edward R. Morrow once said, “Anyone who isn’t confused [about Vietnam] really doesn’t understand the situation.” For many this quote is as true in 2023, on the 50th Anniversary of the war’s “end,” as it was when the war ended; therefore, it now seems timely to take another look at all this confusion. The “situation” in Vietnam was, to be sure, confusing to many who wanted to know, from the very beginning, why the United States became involved in those foreign rice paddies some 7,000 miles away, and it was equally confusing, at the end, to many who wanted to know why the United States, after it lost so much blood and treasure, abandoned its ally to communism in 1975. In an attempt to address these and other questions this account begins years before America became involved in Vietnam and ends years after it left. The Vietnam War proved to be a watershed moment in American history and I have picked this anniversary year to look back in time through a geopolitical lens to try and better understand that era. And, a better understanding of that moment in time might also prove helpful to understanding current events because past could well become prologue when it comes to completing unfinished business in Afghanistan and when it comes to ending the war in Ukraine.

Download or read book Never See a Need written by Marie Therese Foale and published by ATF Press. This book was released on 2016-06-30 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Never See a Need is an account of the lives and works of the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart in South Australia from the time of their foundation in 1866 until Mary MacKillop's canonisation in 2010. Much happened during those 144 years. There were dark times and bright times, times of growth and expansion interspersed with times of decline, times of stability and times of change, and through it all, the members of the Congregation never forgot their call to do what they could to remedy the evils and ills of their society. They were educators, but they also looked out for the welfare of the poor and disadvantaged in different ways as they moved across the landscape to wherever they were needed, always a "people on the move" but always stable in their devotion to their ministry.
