When a chance encounter leads to the man who ruined her mission, Hannah plans to even the score. But she doesn’t expect to unravel a tangled web of lies and treachery that could drag America to its knees. Her only ally is a cop who has burned a few too many bridges himself and understands that the odds are always better when you have nothing left to lose.
Book Synopsis South Of The Bear Lodge by : Patterson, J. D.
Download or read book South Of The Bear Lodge written by Patterson, J. D. and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-02-10 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Slim Silver, a top hand, aims to develop a large ranch of his own in the dry country of northeastern Wyoming. Into this area comes a young recent University of Chicago graduate, Jim Carlson. Carlson plans to take a break on his Uncle's homestead, before selecting his objectives for life. However, Carlson is asked to take care of his Uncle John's homestead for the summer, so that his uncle can take his family back east for a while to an easier life, and also earn some needed money. As observed by Jim Carlson, Slim's friendship with a new western couple, the Blanchards (particularly Teresa Blanchard), leads Slim to oppose the major rancher in the area, Butch Hogan, who wants the water from a spring on the Blanchard homestead. Complicating the interactions, Slim also works off and on as one of Hogan's cow hands. Hogan owns the Lazy Bear Lodge Ranch, by far the largest ranch in the area. The Carlson homestead is just across the Belle Fourche River from the Hogan spread and northeast of the Blanchard's homestead as well as Slim's. As such Carlson is in the middle of the story. In this dry country, south of the Bear Lodge Mountains of Wyoming, water is the main issue. Hogan brings in a sheep herd which causes him to be increasingly short of water. The advantage of sheep is that, unlike cows, they will eat almost anything, but they can also strip the country almost bare. As the pressure for water increases, the Blanchards as well as two Lazy Bear Lodge hands, are murdered. Initial evidence points to Slim as the murderer. Slim is indicted and almost lynched, before Jim Carlson and Fred Hardy, Butch's tough but honest foreman, see that justice is finally realized. At the end, Carlson has grown from a naive college graduate to a real western man who ends up settling in the country south of the Bear Lodge. Slim is acquitted, but because of all the events, is never the same.
Download or read book Along Came Mary written by Jo-Ann Mapson and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2003-01-03 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: USA Today called Jo-Ann Mapson's national bestseller, Bad Girl Creek, "a valentine to oceans of good women who survive bad beginnings and worse men." Now the author, hailed as "one of the most gifted writers of the contemporary urban West" (Los Angeles Times), brings back the hard-luck women of her acclaimed previous novel -- and introduces another indelible character into their midst. "Me, I need a map to tell which town I'm in. I feel like ten miles of bad road, wondering how I got to where I am...." After finally wising up to her drunken rodeo-crooner lover ("Imagine Kevin Costner with an overbite"), Mary Madigan saddles up her twin Border collies and takes her act on the road, leaving miles of heartache and highway behind. Maddy's journey takes her across the South -- singing in and winning one karaoke contest after another -- and inexorably closer to a dreaded showdown with her past. In Oklahoma City, she meets Rick, a journalist haunted by his own ghosts. After he loses his job, he travels to his childhood home to set up camp. When he first runs into Maddy, she gives him the cold shoulder. But he's charming, and persistent, and before Maddy knows it she's got a travel companion and a new lover (with an all-too-familiar set of tricks). Their travels will ultimately bring them to Bad Girl Creek, where the ladies know him as "Rotten Rick" -- because he broke Nance's heart -- and where the waters have already been troubled. Phoebe's pregnancy is life-threatening, Nance's breakup diet has turned dangerously successful, Beryl is still struggling to adjust to life after prison, and HIV-positive Ness is distancing herself from the "healthy" world -- if you can call it that. But these are the Bad Girl Creek ladies: they are resilient. They have character. And, above all, they love each other. The ways they all pull together, cheer each other on through good times and bad, and cope with every curveball life throws at them make up the heart and soul of this powerful new novel, a bighearted book certain to win this exceptional author a new legion of devoted readers.

Book Synopsis What We Leave Behind by : Stanislaw Lubienski
Download or read book What We Leave Behind written by Stanislaw Lubienski and published by MacLehose Press. This book was released on 2022-10-13 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Everything looked perfect. Sand - unique Baltic sand, the best in the world - and the calm sea. But wait. Something was amiss. Something was wrong" It starts with a day at the beach. A single white sock that somehow spoils everything. It's enough to send writer and ornithologist Stanislaw Lubienski on a quest to understand what we throw away, where it goes and whether it will be our legacy. By analysing items he unearths on his trips into nature - a plastic bottle, a tube of Russian penis-enlargement cream, a cigarette butt, an empty aerosol can - tracing their origins and explaining the harm they can do, he shows how consumer society has developed out of control, to the point of environmental catastrophe. He also looks with a birdwatcher's eye at how various animals have come to adapt to and even rely on our rubbish, and interrogates the cultural significance of waste and the origins of our throw-away lifestyles. Finally, he adds a personal touch by examining his own "environmental neurosis" and by going out with refuse crews to watch them work. While Lubienski never hectors his readers, nor shames them, his clear-eyed, persuasive and humble polemic reminds us what we, as individuals, can and cannot do to address an apocalyptic issue while there's still something worth saving. Translated from the Polish by Zosia Krasodomska-Jones

Book Synopsis The Other End of the Leash by : Patricia McConnell, Ph.D.
Download or read book The Other End of the Leash written by Patricia McConnell, Ph.D. and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2009-02-19 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn to communicate with your dog—using their language “Good reading for dog lovers and an immensely useful manual for dog owners.”—The Washington Post An Applied Animal Behaviorist and dog trainer with more than twenty years’ experience, Dr. Patricia McConnell reveals a revolutionary new perspective on our relationship with dogs—sharing insights on how “man’s best friend” might interpret our behavior, as well as essential advice on how to interact with our four-legged friends in ways that bring out the best in them. After all, humans and dogs are two entirely different species, each shaped by its individual evolutionary heritage. Quite simply, humans are primates and dogs are canids (as are wolves, coyotes, and foxes). Since we each speak a different native tongue, a lot gets lost in the translation. This marvelous guide demonstrates how even the slightest changes in our voices and in the ways we stand can help dogs understand what we want. Inside you will discover: • How you can get your dog to come when called by acting less like a primate and more like a dog • Why the advice to “get dominance” over your dog can cause problems • Why “rough and tumble primate play” can lead to trouble—and how to play with your dog in ways that are fun and keep him out of mischief • How dogs and humans share personality types—and why most dogs want to live with benevolent leaders rather than “alpha wanna-bes!” Fascinating, insightful, and compelling, The Other End of the Leash is a book that strives to help you connect with your dog in a completely new way—so as to enrich that most rewarding of relationships.

Book Synopsis Little Miracles Everywhere by : Marcie Fallek

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Join holistic veterinarian Marcie Fallek on an unconventional healing path that puts love of animals and their wellness first. In this funny, honest, and illuminating memoir, Marcie Fallek, a skeptical New Yorker and animal lover, embarks on a journey to become a veterinarian. She begins her quest at an Italian veterinary school, where most students flunk out. Her struggles lead her to India, in search of Divine help. She vows, following a series of cathartic experiences there, to devote her life to caring for animals, with her conscience as her guide. Eventually licensed and working, Marcie discovers that the driving force for many of her colleagues is money, not a love of animals. Unscrupulous vets fake test results, perform unnecessary procedures, and prescribe drugs and food to line their pockets. In fact, Marcie discovers that many of the very prescriptions and procedures designed to heal her charges might, in fact, be leading to more injury and illness. Though she risks losing everything that took so long to build, she sets out to learn the truth. This quest is not without consequences. Yet Marcie stays true to her ethical compass, refusing to compromise her morals and values. At each dark turn, a succession of instances (coincidences? miracles?) leads her down an unconventional healing path, where her spiritual and professional self merge. Marcie finds her true purpose in life: healing animals—including those destined for end-of-life measures—using her wits, wisdom, intuition, love, and holistic care.
