Book excerpt: Following a remarkable recovery from the pandemic anchored in strong fundamentals, the outlook is for growth to slow broadly in line with potential, as inflation falls within the targeted range by end-2024. However, the risk balance is tilted to the downside, reflecting, among other things, external risks and the continued uncertainty around the proposed judicial reform.

Book excerpt: Israel is enjoying strong economic growth, estimated at 4 percent in 2016, supported by strong domestic demand—partly due to high vehicle sales ahead of a tax increase—and an export rebound. Unemployment declined to 4.4 percent in Q4 2016 and wage increases have picked up. Nonetheless, inflation remained below the 1–3 percent target range of the Bank of Israel (BOI), reflecting external factors and government measures to reduce the cost of living. The BOI has held the policy rate at 0.1 percent since February 2015 and stated that monetary policy in Israel will remain accommodative for a considerable time. Strong revenues contained the fiscal deficit to 2.1 percent of GDP in 2016 and the public debt ratio declined to 62 percent of GDP.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the internal and external implications of Israel’s natural gas discoveries in the Eastern Mediterranean. The nation’s changed status from being an importer of coal and oil to that of an exporter of natural gas has consequences not only for the energy sector but also for the fragile geopolitics of the region. The book: Explores the challenges and issues of energy economics and governance; Analyses Israel’s gas diplomacy with its neighbours in the Middle East and North Africa and its potential positive impact on the amelioration of the Arab-Israeli conflict; Studies how Israel can avoid the deleterious impact of the Dutch disease once the government’s share of the export revenues start flowing. The author traces a consummate picture of history, politics, and conflicts that shape the economics of energy in Israel and its future trajectories. A major intervention in Middle East studies, this volume will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of energy studies, development studies, strategic studies, politics, diplomacy, and international relations. It will also be of interest to government agencies, think-tanks, and risk management firms.

Book excerpt: The New Israel: Peacemaking and Liberalization argues that the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian peace process will be expedited by increased economic liberalization. Israel has undergone dramatic economic change in the 1990s, shifting from a strongly protectionist, state-centered economy to a more international, neoliberal one. The book maintains that these fundamental changes have in turn transformed Israeli society as a whole, resulting in a significant moderation of attitudes toward the Palestinian people and Palestinian nationalism. The New Israel contains contributions from both established Israeli sociologists and promising young scholars. The New Israel: Peacemaking and Liberalization is an insightful commentary on one of the most crucial international issues of our time.

Growth is being supported by more favorable global economic conditions, an improvement in the security situation, and appropriate policies, which have included tightening the fiscal stance and easing monetary policy. Real GDP grew by an estimated 4.3 percent in 2004, with exports and private consumption leading the way. The economy is expected to continue to strengthen, albeit at a slightly lower growth rate in 2005.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines the controversy surrounding the use of competition law to combat excessive pricing. While high or monopolistic pricing is not regarded as an antitrust violation in the US, employing abuse of dominance provisions in competition laws to fight excessive pricing has gained popularity in some BRICS jurisdictions and a number of EU-member states in recent years. The book begins by discussing the economic arguments for and against the prohibition of excessive or unfair prices by firms with market power. It then presents various country studies, focusing on developed countries (such as the UK and Israel) and on the BRICS countries, to highlight various practical challenges involved in recognizing excessive prices as abusive conduct on the part of dominant firms, including how to define, measure and identify excessive prices. The contributors also discuss other policy options that can be used to fight excessive prices in order to protect consumer welfare.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes and analyses developments in the Israeli economy from 1995 to 2017. During this period, inflation was vanquished, the deficit in the balance of payments turned into a surplus, the public debt to GDP ratio sharply decreased, and unemployment has declined to an historical low. Nevertheless, the economy still suffers from many maladies: the productivity level is among the lowest in the developed world, and inequality has generally been on the rise. In the face of these threats to future growth and social cohesiveness, the question arises: has the reliance on market forces gone too far, and has the government retreated from its traditional tasks, tasks the private sector cannot (or does not) perform.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Israel is a small country located in the Middle East that has a rich and complex history. It was founded in 1948 after the United Nations approved the partition of Palestine, which resulted in the establishment of two states: Israel and Palestine. Israel is a parliamentary democracy and its government is divided into three branches: legislative, executive, and judicial. The country is led by a prime minister who is elected by the Knesset, which is the Israeli parliament. Israel is known for its diverse population, which includes Jews, Arabs, Druze, Christians, and other minorities. Hebrew and Arabic are the official languages of Israel, and the country also has a strong cultural scene with a thriving film industry, music scene, and literature. Jerusalem is the capital city of Israel, and it is a holy site for Jews, Christians, and Muslims as it contains important religious sites such as the Western Wall, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, and the Dome of the Rock. Israel also has a strong economy with high-tech industries, tourism, and agriculture being major drivers. However, the country also faces challenges such as ongoing conflicts with Palestinians, regional instability, and social issues related to the diverse population.

Current fiscal policy appears to be broadly sustainable and should be sufficient to allow for the continued fall in the debt burden, absent large external macroeconomic shocks. Over the past decade, Jordan has made commendable progress in replacing an informal family-based social safety system with well-defined and well-targeted social protection institutions. The government will need to remain committed to periodic increases of fuel prices to close the gap between domestic and international petroleum product prices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many years, the conflict between Jews and Arabs has affected Middle East politics. In their struggle to establish a Jewish state in a hostile region, the founding citizens of Israel put aside their cultural and religious differences to fight as a unified nation. Ironically, it was the prospect of peace that brought these differences back into the light. Israel became challenged by deep divisions within. The founders did not envision this divided nation--but the founders are gone. Today's Israelis must decide how to carry the founding vision forward. How will Israel's past shape its future? How will its people answer the looming questions of race, religion, citizenship--and nationhood itself? The answers lie in an extraordinary history--and a future only to be imagined.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Based on over twenty years of research, The Israeli Economy offers a broad survey and analysis of an economy that has grown at an extraordinary rate, has been subject to large external shocks, and that has been a part of extensive conflict throughout its history. The book focuses on four main themes: understanding the secret of the rapid growth of the Israeli economy, evaluating the cost of the Israeli-Arab conflict, studying Israel as a country subject to large external shocks whose effects can be tested, and examining the effects of neoliberal policy on economic performance and inequality. Originally published in Hebrew in February 2018, the book has been restructured and framed for an English-speaking audience, omitting many details meant for Israeli readers and focusing more on the lessons that people from other countries can draw from Israel as a case study. The book draws on data from the Israeli Central Bureau of Statistics and the Statistical Appendices of the annual Bank of Israel reports, as well as from the Israeli Parliament, the research center of the Knesset, and publications from US Congress. In The Israeli Economy, Joseph Zeira provides a comprehensive economic history of a country with an important role in the Middle East, arguing that it's impossible to understand the region without understanding Israel and its phenomenal success"--
