Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Particularly relevant in an election year...This book is full of data—on the economy, technology, and more—that will help millennials articulate their generational rage and help boomers understand where they’re coming from.” —The Washington Post “Jill Filipovic cuts through the noise with characteristic clarity and nuance. Behind the meme is a thoughtfully reported book that greatly contributes to our understanding of generational change.” —Irin Carmon, coauthor of the New York Times bestseller Notorious RBG Baby Boomers are the most prosperous generation in American history, but their kids are screwed. In this eye-opening book, journalist Jill Filipovic breaks down the massive problems facing Millennials including climate, money, housing, and healthcare. In Ok Boomer, Let’s Talk, journalist (and Millenial) Jill Filipovic tells the definitive story of her generation. Talking to gig workers, economists, policy makers, and dozens of struggling Millennials drowning in debt on a planet quite literally in flames, Filipovic paints a shocking and nuanced portrait of a generation being left behind: -Millennials are the most educated generation in American history—and also the most broke. -Millennials hold just 3 percent of American wealth. When they were the same age, Boomers held 21 percent. -The average older Millennial has $15,000 in student loan debt. The average Boomer at the same age? Just $2,300 in today’s dollars. -Millennials are paying almost 40 percent more for their first homes than Boomers did. -American families spend twice as much on healthcare now than they did when Boomers were young parents. Filipovic shows that Millennials are not the avocado-toast-eating snowflakes of Boomer outrage fantasies. But they are the first American generation that will do worse than their parents. “OK, Boomer” isn’t just a sarcastic dismissal—it’s a recognition that Millennials are in crisis, and that Boomer voters, bankers, and policy makers are responsible. Filipovic goes beyond the meme, upending dated assumptions with revelatory data and revealing portraits of young people delaying adulthood to pay down debt, obsessed with “wellness” because they can’t afford real healthcare, and struggling to #hustle in the precarious gig economy. Ok Boomer, Let’s Talk is at once an explainer and an extended olive branch that will finally allow these two generations to truly understand each other.

Book excerpt: Boomer: In the Theater of Fearful Tragedies is a nonfiction account of the life of Colonel George B. Boomer, a little-known bridge builder and combat veteran who served in the Civil War of the United States. He was the son of a Baptist minister from Sutton, Massachusetts, who struggled with his Christian faith while searching for God's plan for his life. While his formal education was limited by a youthful disability of the eyes, he became a self-taught master bridge builder who learned to speak multiple languages while living in the state of Missouri. However, he is most known for his skills as a military commander who received compliments from Ulysses S. Grant. Colonel Boomer was the commander of the Twenty-Sixth Missouri Regiment, and he served in the western theater of the war. He was actively involved in Pope's campaign against Island Number Ten, and he suffered severe wounds at the Battle of Iuka, Mississippi. His greatest military accomplishment occurred during the pivotal battle of Champion's Hill, and it is likely that the actions of his brigade were largely responsible for the Union victory. Boomer endured tragedies in his civilian life and his life in the military at the hands ambitious political figures who brought him great grief. However, he would ultimately find his life's meaning in a peach orchard just outside Vicksburg, Mississippi. His selfless actions saved the lives of many of the men under his command. His veteran sacrifice for his country needs to be remembered.

Book excerpt: Friends are forever and family ties binding. So it would seem for Eugene Boomer, as he and his four friends, Sticks, Gracie, Fud and Pastor Jim Bob frolic through childhood and adolescence. Theirs is the silly and carefree life we wish for all our children. And if only it could prepare them for the harsher life beyond. Friends and family fall victim to the turbulence of the 60s. Boomer's relationships are battered by the choices he makes and by events he can't control, particularly the Vietnam War. Beyond middle age, he is drawn out of his self-imposed isolation and back to the gentle joys of his boyhood. Boomer is the story of a lifetime, the joys and tragedies, the things that are destroyed and the surprising ones that survive and return. Boomer is an allegory of a generation born from the euphoria of one war's end, and scarred by its bloody involvement in another.

Book excerpt: Lee Stuart learned from an early age to respect all creatures through his heritage as a Native American; he also learned what it was like to be an unwanted citizen in this country. Throughout his life, he demonstrated an uncanny knack for understanding and communicating with animals, particularly those that were unwanted. From Teddy the Bantam rooster to Sparky the pigeon, as well as a wide variety of other pets, Stuart loved them all deeply and fought to protect them from ill treatment. The deep bond that developed between himself and the unwanted black Labrador retriever his daughter named Boomer confirms that there is much to the master/dog relationship, which is poignantly demonstrated when Boomer saves Stuarts life in 1996

Book excerpt: It’s been a thousand years since the Pact was forged with the blood of heroes, uniting the five tribes and pushing the shadows back into the darkness. Since that time, peace has reigned in former Eventide. But now, dark shadows working behind the scenes for centuries have corrupted the once-pure High Magus Council, the overseers of the Pact and enforcers of its laws, twisting the justice it once stood for into a gross parody of greed and control. But an ancient, secret prophecy speaks of a lost people. People ignorant to the ways of magick and steel, but masters of a new kind of magick. The magick of crafts and machines, of information and tecknowledge. It is said they will emerge from a halo of dark light and bring with them a city of wonders. Life tends to slow to a crawl in Dunsmith, British Columbia. The small Vancouver Island town is nothing more than a crossroads. But when a strange event occurs and leaves the entire town stranded knee-deep in the Disputed Lands, they find they must band together as they face trials they were unprepared for. Invading armies, magick, elementals and even the local economy have to be taken into consideration. But how well can a small town of eight thousand hold back the furies of the Pactlands?

Book excerpt: The Baby Boomers, born between 1946 and 1964, form the single largest demographic spike in American history. Never before or since have birth rates shot up and remained so high so long, with some obvious results: when the Boomers were kids, American culture revolved around families and schools; when they were teenagers, the United States was wracked by rebelliousness; now, as mature adults, the Boomers have led America to become the richest and most powerful country in the history of the world. Boomer Nation will for the first time offer an incisive look into this generation that has redefined America's culture in so many ways, from women's rights and civil rights to religion and politics. Steve Gillon combines firsthand reporting of the lives of six Boomers and their families with a broad look at postwar American history in a fascinating mix of biography and history. His characters, like America itself, reflect a variety of heritages: rich and poor, black and white, immigrant and native born. Their lives take very different paths, yet are shaped by key events and trends in similar ways. They put a human face on the Boomer generation, showing what it means to grow up amid widespread prosperity, with an explosion of democratic autonomy that led to great upheavals but also a renewal from below of our churches, industries, and even the armed forces. The same generation dismissed as pampered and selfish has led a revival of religion in America; the same generation that unleashed the women's movement has also shifted our politics into its most market-oriented, anti-governmental era since Woodrow Wilson. Gillon draws many lessons from this "generational history" -- above all, that the Boomers have transformed America from the security- and authority-seeking culture of their parents to the autonomy- and freedom-rich world of today. When the "greatest generation" was young and not yet at war, it was widely derided as selfish and spoiled. Only in hindsight, long after the sacrifices of World War II, did it gain its sterling reputation. Today, as Boomer America rises to the challenges of the war on terror, we may be on the cusp of a reevaluation of the generation of Presidents Bush and Clinton. That generation has helped make America the richest, strongest nation on the planet, and as Gillon's book proves, it has had more influence on the rest of us than any other group. Boomer Nation is an eye-opening reinterpretation of the past six decades.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most managerial accounting texts emphasize the mechanics of managerial accounting. While important, mechanics are not enough. To solve business problems, students need to understand how managerial accounting can improve decision-making, and when and where a particular tool or technique is appropriate. Balakrishnan’s Managerial Accounting 1st edition presents accounting information in the context of business decision making. It combines the traditional topics of managerial accounting with a strategic framework that shows students how to construct decision models and measure information. By linking business decisions with accounting information students will be motivated to learn and make more informed decisions. Balakrishnan will appeal to courses where there is a true focus on decision making and accounting is placed within a business context.
