Book excerpt: In this pioneering work, the author develops a fundamental formulation of logic in terms of theory of matrices and vector spaces. The discovery of matrix logic represents a landmark in the further formalization of logic. For the first time the power of direct mathematical computation is applied to the whole set of logic operations, allowing the derivation of both the classical and modal logics from the same formal base. The new formalism allows the author to enlarge the alphabet of the truth-values with negative logic antivalues and to link matrix logic descriptions with the Dirac formulation of quantum theory - a result having fundamental implications and repercussions for science as a whole. As a unified language which permits a logical examination of the underlying phenomena of quantum field theory and vice versa, matrix logic opens new avenues for the study of fundamental interactions and gives rise to a revolutionary conclusion that physics as such can be viewed and studied as a logic in the fundamental sense. Finally, modelling itself on exact sciences, matrix logic does not refute the classical logic but instead incorporates it as a special deterministic limit. The book requires multidisciplinary knowledge and will be of interest to physicists, mathematicians, computer scientists and engineers.

Book excerpt: This volume offers a systematic, comprehensive investigation of field extensions, finite or not, that possess a Cogalois correspondence. The subject is somewhat dual to the very classical Galois Theory dealing with field extensions possessing a Galois correspondence. Solidly backed by over 250 exercises and an extensive bibliography, this book presents a compact and complete review of basic field theory, considers the Vahlen-Capelli Criterion, investigates the radical, Kneser, strongly Kneser, Cogalois, and G-Cogalois extensions, discusses field extensions that are simultaneously Galois and G-Cogalois, and presents nice applications to elementary field arithmetic.

Book excerpt: This book aims to introduce fuzzy matrix theory as a basic framework for characterizing the full scope of the fuzzy sets concept and its relationship with the increasingly important concept of information and complexity in various sciences and professions. The book provides a wide coverage on the theoretical developments of fuzzy matrices and fuzzy vector spaces, on the theory of generalized inverses for fuzzy matrices, on fuzzy relations and on partial orderings on fuzzy matrices. The book also discusses the role of fuzzy matrices in the spectral theory of linear transformations on finite dimensional vector spaces. The concept of fuzzy matrix and its applications in document retrieval system, medical diagnosis, database management system, decision making theory and dynamical systems are developediteratively and illustrated with suitable examples wherever necessary. Each chapter has brief notes and exercises for the benefit of students.

Book excerpt: A generalization of Conventional Matrix Product (CMP), called the Semi-Tensor Product (STP), is proposed. It extends the CMP to two arbitrary matrices and maintains all fundamental properties of CMP. In addition, it has a pseudo-commutative property, which makes it more superior to CMP. The STP was proposed by the authors to deal with higher-dimensional data as well as multilinear mappings. After over a decade of development, STP has been proven to be a powerful tool in dealing with nonlinear and logical calculations. This book is a comprehensive introduction to the theory of STP and its various applications, including logical function, fuzzy control, Boolean networks, analysis and control of nonlinear systems, amongst others.

Book excerpt: Employing a closed set-theoretic foundation for interval computations, Global Optimization Using Interval Analysis simplifies algorithm construction and increases generality of interval arithmetic. This Second Edition contains an up-to-date discussion of interval methods for solving systems of nonlinear equations and global optimization problems. It expands and improves various aspects of its forerunner and features significant new discussions, such as those on the use of consistency methods to enhance algorithm performance. Provided algorithms are guaranteed to find and bound all solutions to these problems despite bounded errors in data, in approximations, and from use of rounded arithmetic.
