Book excerpt: Is The Book of Mormon a Great American Novel? Avi Steinberg thinks so. In this quirky travelogue—part fan nonfiction, part personal quest—he follows the trail laid out in Joseph Smith’s book. From Jerusalem to the ruined Mayan cities of Central America to upstate New York and, finally, to Jackson County, Missouri—the spot Smith identified as the site of the Garden of Eden—Steinberg traces The Book’s unexpected path and grapples with Joseph Smith’s demons—and his own. Literate and funny, personal and provocative, the genre-bending The Lost Book of Mormon boldly explores our deeply human impulse to write books, and affirms the abiding power of story.
Book Synopsis The Lost Lands of the Book of Mormon by : Phyllis Carol Olive
Download or read book The Lost Lands of the Book of Mormon written by Phyllis Carol Olive and published by Bonneville Books. This book was released on 2000-09 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From ample archeological evidence, it appears the lands of western and central New York were once populated by ancient civilizations. The question that must be asked is-- did they belong to the Nephites and Jaredites? Since the Book of Mormon clearly details the demise of two mighty nations in the territory of Cumorah, we can only surmise that the artifacts found in that region were left by those whose history is contained within the Book of Mormon. However, in order to successfully locate the individual territories described within the scriptures, which verify that these lands were indeed populated by the Book of Mormon people, we must first go back in time to an era when primeval forests and great inland seas filled the land from one end to the other. Only by reconstructing that ancient setting can we hope to locate the lost lands of the Nephites and Jaredites. Even though much of the water that once filled the territory has long since receded from the land, much water still remains-- including the beautiful Finger Lakes which are the last remnants of that era.

Download or read book Mormon's Map written by John L. Sorenson and published by Maxwell Institute. This book was released on 2000 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the ancient prophet Mormon edited the scriptural texts that would become the Book of Mormon, he must have had a map in his mind of the places and physical features that comprised the setting for the events described in that book. Mormon's Map is Book of Mormon scholar John Sorenson's reconstruction of that mental map solely from information gleaned from the text after years of intensive study. He describes his method; establishes the overall shape of Book of Mormon lands; sorts out details of topography, distance, direction, climate, and civilization; and treats issues of historical geography. The resultant map will facilitate analysis of geography-related issues in the Book of Mormon narrative and also be of help in evaluating theories about where in the real world the Nephite lands were located.

Book excerpt: Be amazed as the author shows that the location where Book of Mormon History occurred can be found from the descriptions of the region where Mormon lived. You will see that he purposely included his descriptions in the Book of Mormon so that his location could be found. His descriptions are compared with modern day archeological and historical documents showing that Book of Mormon History occurred in Western New York. Statements made by modern day prophets confirming this are also provided for reference. Also statements made by Book of Mormon prophets indicate that they could only have been upon one continent, the United States of America. This is an easy reading book meant to be informative without being technical. The book also shows that historical and archaeological documentation of the Nephite/Lamanite culture have been sitting on library shelves for years. Learn the location of Ripliancum, the narrow-neck of land, the river Sidon, the place where Hagoth launched his ships and many other Book of Mormon land and landmarks.
Book Synopsis Where in the Americas Are the Lands of the Book of Mormon? by : Eldon V. Guymon
Download or read book Where in the Americas Are the Lands of the Book of Mormon? written by Eldon V. Guymon and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2018-06-20 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Book of Mormon was published in 1830. This book tells us that Lehi and his family sailed from the cost of Arabia after 600 BC. Supposedly, Lehi landed in Peru, and his descendants colonized Columbia and later moved northward through a narrow pass. The Isthmus of Panama has been assumed to be the narrow pass. The land to the north of Panama was supposed to be the land of Desolation. Warfare was common between two groups—Nephites and Lamanites. Roughly AD 400, the Lamanites destroyed the Nephites at the Hill Cumorah, which is said to be in New York, USA. Historic “church” leaders are quoted to support the historic theories. However, the church today has no position on the location of the lands in question, so one may choose for himself where the lands were located. Quoting historic “church” leaders proves nothing. Scientists associated with the historic Archaeological Department of Brigham Young University have presented Mesoamerica as the lands of the book. Mormon told us that the river Sidon ran north to the sea (1981, B of M Index p. 730). The Mississippi runs south and is not the river Sidon. Mormon also told us that the people of Zarahemla (Mulekites) crossed a salt ocean landing at the land of Desolation. Hence, the land of Desolation bordered a salt ocean (Alma 22:30 and 63:5). These facts discount several theories, including the heartland theory and great lakes theories. However, historians quote early “church” leaders as prophets and continue to hold to traditional beliefs. The Book of Mormon is the position of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The lands in question must fit with this book regardless of traditions. The book fits in Mesoamerica. Because people in 1830 had little or no knowledge of the cultures of Mesoamerica, Joseph Smith could not have stolen the book from other authors and the early Mormons could not have written the book. Read Where in the Americas are the Lands of the Book of Mormon” to find out what the Book of Mormon tells us about the lands in question.
