Book excerpt: My short literary novel is about one woman's life. It begins as this large, red-haired woman is fishing from a pier that extends into the bay. She lights a cigarette, shifts the pole to her other hand and sighs with contentment for being alone this Sunday morning. Her mind scrolls back to her childhood as the third of four daughters of a southern mid-west farmer. She recalls the wonder she always felt toward her daddy, because he was tall and red-haired like she was, though none of his children were. He taught her that there was no shame in being poor - that some people just naturally were poor. Her memory replays the scenes of trauma of attending a neighbor's funeral service, the thrill of going to town for new school shoes, her graduation from 8th grade, and going to work in the nearby town of French Springs. Her meeting Elmer, their subsequent marriage, her loss of their first baby, his becoming involved with the idea of Unionism, and their moving to the West Coast. She remembers, but doesn't take much stock in people she has met who have told her that human's, through their minds, have more control of their lives than they think. She remembers too her second miscarriage, her husbands death, years of despair, including disappointing love affairs. But on this Sunday, Wilma is content. She subsists on a dish-washing job. She is 54 years old, overweight and alone. But she still believes that some people are just naturally supposed to be that way, so she is content.

Book excerpt: Fifteen-year-old Jamelle Bonet is the daughter of a wealthy, French-born wine merchant living in England in 1619. When her father is executed for treason and stripped of his possessions, Jamelle must flee the country manor of her childhood and leave behind the trappings of her privileged upbringing. Her father's accuser makes a violent attempt to seduce her. With the aid of handsome Brent Foster, the penniless nephew of Lord Phillip Wagram, Jamelle resists. Her attacker is unexpectedly killed, throwing the lives of both young people into chaos. Brent flees to Virginia while Jamelle struggles in London's seamy underworld, still pining for Brent, who does not answer her letters. When a sum left secretly by her father comes into her hands, she sails for Virginia, ignoring qualms about Brent Foster as well as rumors about the hardships of Colony life. The reality is every bit as daunting as the rumors, but Jamelle is not one to quit Jamestown easily. She marries, gives birth to a daughter and is at her husband's side on Theden Hundred when Indian tribes launch a surprise attack. Little survives, but Jamelle finds love from an unexpected source and the courage to go on.

Baxter meet and share the stage with the rear end of a horse, while in Flipside four sailors confront the elements for 119 days, adrift on the overturned boat Rose-Noëlle. Finally, Trick of the Light revisits the infamous Crewe murders when a brother and sister bring their mother's ashes to a motel room that hasn't been opened in three decades.

Book excerpt: The Space Babies saga has been determined: They're people, not pets. Continue on the journey with Baby Soldiers In Space. Helian Six has it made. Their own planet, lifemates, and kids. Not bad for a species who were born in vats—to emerge full grown with designated careers dependent upon specifically implanted personality traits. What used to be friendly competition has turned into jealousy, and everyone is scrambling to be accepted onto their planet to live the good life. Now, the Helian Six crew, with their updated promotions, can afford to be picky about who goes or stays. However, a personal request from the Supreme Commander has all but ordered acceptance of a new breed of female. The leader, with her steadfast ways, nurturing heart, and fuzzy unibrow, has caught the Ambassador's finicky eye. The poor crew members of Helian Six have been warned to give these refugee females everything they may need. Unfortunately, they can't share with their hormonally moody mates as to why they're giving extra attention to the hairy bunch. * This is book 2 in the Purple People Series. What's gone on before: The crew of Helian Six found a stasis capsule in space with waking inhabitants. There were nineteen tiny purple beings aboard—to match his crew of nineteen warriors. It was a sign they needed to find mates and rear the small ones. It worked out to their advantage that a passing vessel contained nineteen teachers of the species Human and needed kidnapping. Er, rescuing. Those sexy teachers agreed to stay with our humble Freijian warriors. And that is our story to date! After years of drifting, fifty-year-old Pete Ryman has settled down with his potbellied pig, Pearl, in the small Montana town of Sleeping Grass--a place he never expected to see again. It's not the life he dreamed of, but there aren't many prospects for a high-school dropout like him. Elderly widow Wilma Jacobsen carries a burden of guilt over her part in events that led to Pete leaving Sleeping Grass decades ago. Now that he's back, she's been praying for the chance to make things right, but she never expected God's answer to leave her flat on her face--literally--and up to her ears in meddling. When the younger sister Pete was separated from as a child shows up in Sleeping Grass with her eleven-year-old son, Pete is forced to face a past he buried long ago, and Wilma discovers her long-awaited chance at redemption may come at a higher cost than she's willing to pay. "Katie Powner brings both humor and heft to the page as she celebrates simple pleasures and not-so-simple love."--JULIE CANTRELL, New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of Perennials

Wenn Sie sie gelesen haben, werden Sie sich über viele Dinge wundern und sich selbst viele Fragen stellen. Every life is a theatrical play and has its own intriguing story. But there are some lives that don’t dovetail into plays or stories. Their lives exceeded the dimensions of one particular story or play, transforming into a chain of stories and plays. While I was constructing the story of their strange life, I found myself on stage in a play. Nobody told me to act in it. I’m a volunteer actor in this play. The theater is where this play, in which I’m an actor, opens its curtains while you’re snoozing away in your warm, comfy bed. Sometimes after a one-act play is played, it closes its curtains before midnight, and sometimes it stays open until the morning to watch the awakening of those in the bosom of sleep. I’m the one who plays in and watches this strange game until the stories are yours.
