Book excerpt: Ultra-High-Performance Steel Fiber Reinforced Concrete (UHP-SFRC) is an emerging concrete considered as an optimal, durable material that can substitute conventional concrete owing to its distinct fresh and hardened properties. Thus, it is essential to understand the mechanism of stress transfer between this concrete and conventional reinforcement that permits the composite action of both materials. A four-point bending test program (FPBT) was arranged and conducted on 19 beams designed for the bond development to occur in the constant moment region along a short embedment length in order to achieve a uniform distribution of bond stresses, enabling measurement of bond strength through reverse engineering of beam strength and deformation. Additional material testing was conducted on prisms under 4-point loading in order to extract the mechanical properties for all material mixes considered. The bond-specimens failed either by pullout or by cone formation with minimal deterioration of the concrete cover, illustrating the high confinement provided by the novel concrete surrounding the bar in tension. The bond strength was determined to be directly proportional to the tensile strength capacity of the design mix, where for the strongest material the bond strength was approximately 30 MPa. Moreover, the test results indicated a very ductile flexural beam response accompanied by significant mid-span deflection reaching 27 mm and substantial bar-slip values attaining 19 mm. Different UHP-SFRC mixes, concrete covers, and embedment lengths were considered. A numerical model was developed to simulate the FPBT using a nonlinear finite element analysis platform, VecTor2, with the ability to model this novel concrete. This high bond strength provided by the concrete cover enables a significant reduction in the design development length as compared to what is used today for conventional concrete.

Advances in material science led to the production of High Performance Steel that has enhanced corrosion resistance and higher strength compared to conventional Grade 60 steel. Such material can lead to more economical design reducing the material requirements for a particular project and expanding its life span. The objective of this research is to study the bond behavior of High Performance reinforcing bars for concrete structures and to evaluate the effect of different parameters believed to affect the bond characteristics. Twenty-two large scale reinforced concrete splice beams were constructed using No. 8 and No. 11 reinforcing bars, having different cross-sections with varying concrete compressive strengths and development lengths. The beams were tested using four point bending setup to provide a constant moment region over the splice zone. Test results indicate that stresses up 90 ksi can be achieved in the No. 8 bars and up to 70 ksi in the No. 11 bars without confinement; however, it is recommended to use transverse reinforcement to confine the High Performance bars in order to ensure ductility. These stresses can be evaluated at failure using a simple proposed equation. Test results were used to extend the current ACI Committee 408 equations to better predict the stresses in the High Performance Steel.

Thirteen specimens comprising four distinct UHPC or ECC (Engineered Cementitious Composite) material compositions and two different values cover thicknesses to the embedded bar were tested. Experimental results were compared with bond strength values obtained from beam tests where anchorage length in the constant moment region and material properties were the same. Bond strength measurements obtained from the DTP setup were half the corresponding values obtained from beam specimens, whereas the DTP setup showed more sensitivity to the increase of the cover thickness. Detailed nonlinear finite element analysis was conducted using two alternative levels of approximation in modeling the bar matrix interface. The occurrence of unaccounted for confining pressures and restraint effects were shown in conventional pullout methods, while the DTP setup provided the most conservative estimate of bond strength.

Book excerpt: High-performance (HP) steel reinforcing bars are characterized by their high tensile strength and enhanced corrosion resistance in comparison to conventional ASTM A 615 Grade 60 steel. Use of HP steel in concrete bridges could lead to potential savings by reducing the amount of steel required based on its higher strength characteristics and expanding the service life of bridges due to its enhanced corrosion resistance. A commercially available steel know Micro-Composite Multi-Structural Formable (MMFX) steel which is conforming to ASTM A 1035, was selected for this study because of its high tensile strength and enhanced corrosion resistance. Comprehensive experimental and analytical programs were carried out to evaluate the mechanical properties of the HP steel bars, its bond characteristics, and the behavior of concrete bridge decks reinforced with HP steel. Research findings showed that HP steel used in this study exhibited much higher tensile strength than that of conventional Grade 60. In addition, the HP steel bars had much lower corrosion rate than Grade 60 bars. Bending HP steel bars reduce its ultimate strength and strain by 6 and 70 percent, respectively. However, when HP steel bent bars are bonded to concrete they develop their full stress-strain capacity. Bond test results indicated that a stress level up to 90 ksi can be developed in #8 HP steel bars without the use of transverse reinforcement. The use of transverse reinforcement increases the bond strength of HP steel reinforcing bars, consequently reaching stress levels in the bars up to 150 ksi. When possible, it is recommended to use a minimum amount of transverse reinforcement to confine spliced bars to ensure ductile behavior and provide warning prior to failure. Direct replacement of Grade 60 with HP steel bars in bridge decks is a conservative approach. However, reducing the amount of HP steel by 33 percent does not impair the ultimate-load carrying capacity or alter the serviceability behavior o.

On the other hand, research reported in the literature indicates that a mechanism should exists which would confine the tension lap splices in high strength concrete (HSC) in order to have a more ductile failure and to increase the capacity of the lap splice. The main objective of this research is to assess the effect of FRP wraps in improving the serviceability and ultimate response of bond-critical regions in reinforced concrete members. The lack of research reported in the literature on the effect of the FRP wraps on bond strength makes this study significant. Moreover, the research will provide important design information that facilitates the introduction of FRP into design codes and encourage the use of this new technology. To meet the objective, 10 full-scale high strength concrete beam specimen were tested. Each beam was designed with 20-mm bars spliced in a constant moment region at midspan. The variables were: FRP type (glass or carbon), number of layers of FRP (1 or 2), and the configuration of FRP wraps placed in the splice region. Results of the study indicated that FRP wraps have similar effects to those of steel fibers and transverse steel reinforcement in confining the splices in HSC beam specimen. The brittle mode of failure is modified to a more ductile one. More bar lugs along the spliced bars are allowed to participate in the stress transfer between steel and concrete, and the average splitting bond strength is increased. Finally, a new index, Ktr, f, accounting for the presence and amount of FRP confining tension lap splices in HSC beams was proposed.

Since the tensile behavior of Ultra High Performance Concrete (UHPC) is dominated by the amount and the orientation of fibers as well as the type of fibers, an effort has been made in this study to investigate the influence of the fiber volume fraction () and the fiber orientation on the bond behavior of steel rebar embedded in UHPC under a static loading condition using finite element simulation. Owing to the inclusion of discrete fibers, the characteristic of UHPC is highly anisotropic even at a macro level and it is important that the material model of UHPC captures that anisotropy properly. While modeling fibers discretely is time consuming and involves a lot of computational power, the present study proposes a computationally efficient way of modeling UHPC. In this approach, UHPC is considered as a composite material with the matrix modeled as a homogeneous material and the fibers modeled as smeared reinforcement. The directional vector of the smeared reinforcement represents the orientation of the fibers inside the matrix. ATENA, a finite element program, is used for this purpose. The material properties of the fibers are calibrated using the stress-stain data obtained from uniaxial direct tensile tests of UHPC. The calibrated fiber properties are then used to model pullout tests of a rebar embedded in UHPC. The bond stress versus slip properties of the rebar are validated with the experimental pullout test results. The calibrated rebar properties along with the fiber properties are then used to model uniaxial direct tensile tests of UHPC with embedded rebar. Once the tensile test model of the composite is validated using the experimental data, parametric studies are conducted to determine the effect of and fiber orientation on the uniaxial tensile behavior of rebar-reinforced UHPC. Based on the parametric studies, the dependence of the structural ductility on is discussed and a recommendation for the minimum strain to attain ductility is made.
