This book was released on 2007-11-01 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the past twenty-five years Americans have relied on Pulitzer Prize-winning wordsmith William Safire for their weekly dose of linguistic illumination in The New York Times Magazine's column "On Language" -- one of the most popular features of the magazine and a Sunday-morning staple for innumerable fans. He is the most widely read writer on the English language today. Safire is the guru of contemporary vocabulary, speech, language, usage and writing. Dedicated and disputatious readers itch to pick up each column and respond to the week's linguistic wisdom with a gotcha letter to the Times. The Right Word in the Right Place at the Right Time marks the publication of Safire's sixteenth book on language. This collection is a classic to be read, re-read, enjoyed and fought over. Fans, critics and fellow linguists wait with bated (from the French abattre "to beat down") breath for each new anthology -- and, like its predecessors, this one is bound to satisfy and delight. Safire finds fodder for his columns in politics and current events, as well as in science, technology, entertainment and daily life. The self-proclaimed card-carrying language maven and pop grammarian is not above tackling his own linguistic blunders as he detects language trends and tracks words, phrases and clichés to their source. Scholarly, entertaining and thoughtful, Safire's critical observations about language and slanguage are at once provocative and enlightening. Safire is America's go-to guy when it comes to language, and he has included sharp and passionately opinionated letters from readers across the English-speaking world who have been unable to resist picking up a pen to put the maven himself in his place or to offer alternate interpretations, additional examples, amusing anecdotes or just props. The Right Word in the Right Place at the Right Time is a fascinating, learned and piquant look at the oddities and foibles that find their way into the English language. Exposing linguistic hooey and rigamarole and filled with Safire's trademark wisdom, this book has a place on the desk or bedside table of all who share his profound love of the English language -- as well as his penchant for asking "What does that mean?" Or, "Wassat?" This new collection is sure to delight readers, writers and word lovers everywhere and spark the interest of anyone who has ever wondered, "Where did the phrase 'brazen hussy' come from?"

Book excerpt: "Bold-Faced Lies: The Wisdom You Never See" is a collection of rhythmic poetry. The author's style is unorthodox in approach when compared to traditionalist views and similar reflections held among modern contemporaries. This work meditates on the aesthetics of art as a feature of working with prose through poetics. For proofreaders, the experience will feel like a maze; but for reading enthusiasts, journeying through this chapbook will help them disappear into an intimacy of thought where "words" make us feel foreign and vulnerable to our own ways of thinking and viewing the world.

Book excerpt: The Politics of Deception: Target America addresses the age-old subject of deception in politics as it has occurred throughout our nation's history with warnings we have received through scripture and iconic spiritual leaders and others concerning its menacing presence. Never has its presence in our domestic and international political environments been so apparent and pervasive. The hostile and polarizing state of those environments is the result of decades of deception, corruption, influence peddling, and espionage to support the infiltration and subversion of our government, educational and religious institutions, and society. It is much more apparent since the 2016 presidential election that we are witnessing a resurgence of the radical Left. Their militant secularist and socialist ideology and agenda is being aided and abetted by elements of our own and foreign intelligence services and corrupt establishment career politicians. Our nation, culture, and society are in peril. We are currently engaged in an uncivil and unholy war. It's a war between starkly different political ideologies and visions of America's future fueled from within and outside our national boundaries by the Bolsheviks, Alinsky disciples, and revolutionaries of the Left. The radical Left with their domestic and international allies are demons of demagoguery and deception and intend on hijacking our presidency, democratic electoral process with the heart and soul of America, and our wealth and freedoms. The ideological battle lines between Right and Left, Republican and Democrat, are drawn-right versus wrong, light versus darkness, culture of life versus culture of death, individualism versus collectivism, jobs versus welfare, God and family first versus godless me too first, spirit of Christ versus spirit of the antichrist, American exceptionalism versus American mediocrity, rule of law versus lawlessness, less government versus more intrusive government. The stakes are high, the choices clear. Choose wisely. God bless America.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the geographical dimensions and implications of the post-truth era. Opening with a defense of the Enlightenment and the continued significance of science, objectivity, and truth, it then provides three key perspectives on the concept: The first is a philosophical analysis of post-truth. Social theory in various forms has sutured knowledge and power, in the process relativizing the nature of truth. This process reaches its apogee under post-modernism, which questions the very nature of truth itself. The second is the examination of the historical origins and development of the post-truth world. While post-truth has a history that can be traced back to the 18th and 19th centuries, more recently it has growth prolifically through the use of social media. The book examines post-truth as it appears in the yellow journalism of the Hearst newspapers, Holocaust denial, and contemporary attacks on science itself (e.g., the anti-vaccine movement, denial of evolution). Post-truth becomes a central issue in Western politics following Brexit and the election of Donald Trump, who uses it frequently to advance a reactionary political agenda. Russian hackers weaponize it to interfere in the politics of Europe and the U.S. Fox News and other right-wing outlets also play a central role. One result is the proliferation of unfounded conspiracy theories such as QAnon. Today, autocrats and dictators the world over use fake news to maintain their power. Finally, this book links the rise of a post-truth society to the dynamics of contemporary economic geography. Knowledge-intensive capitalism has greatly elevated the significance of symbolic workers or the creative class. Geographically, contemporary capitalism has accentuated the agglomeration of producer services in large urban areas in which such workers labor. Conversely, rural areas and small towns have largely become repositories of the undereducated, and thus are more susceptible to fake news.

Here are some topics in this eleventh volume of his writings: Migrants dying in Mediterranean Sea “Admonishing migrants not to flee conditions so dire is like telling occupants not to flee a house on fire.” Narcissism of tweeting condolences “The expression of such sentiments these days is intended more to draw attention to the person tweeting them than to comfort the person (who should be) receiving them.” Only authoritarian regimes can govern Arab countries “Show me an Arab country governed by a democratically elected government and I’ll show you one that is an ungovernable mess.” Putin as world’s most powerful leader “Hailing a despot like Vladimir Putin as the most powerful politician in the world makes about as much sense as hailing a drug lord like Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán as the most powerful businessman.” The mess in the Middle East “It’s complicated; which explains why cocksure, warmongering neo-cons—who goaded Bush into invading Iraq—are the only ones criticizing Obama for not having simple military strategy for dealing with the mess in the Middle East. You’d never know that these are the same folks who stirred up the hornet’s nest of sectarian violence the world has been trying in vain to contain ever since.” Black women dominating swimming championships “Black women can’t swim? They used to say white men can’t jump. Ha!”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Folklorist in the Marketplace brings together voices from multiple disciplines to consider how economics shape—and are shaped by—folk groups and academic disciplines. The authors ask how folk and folklorists can productively comment on the economic structures they inhabit. As trade, technology, and geopolitics have led to a rapid increase in the global spread of cultural products like media, knowledge, objects, and folkways, there has been a concomitant rise in fear and anxiety about globalization’s dark other side—economic nativism, neocolonialism, cultural appropriation, and loss. Culture has become a resource and a currency in the global marketplace. This movement of people and forms necessitates a new textual consideration of how folklore and economics interweave. In The Folklorist in the Marketplace, contributors explore how the marketplace and folklore have always been integrally linked and what that means at this cultural and economic moment. Covering a variety of topics, from creel boats to the history of a commune that makes hammocks, The Folklorist in the Marketplace goes far beyond the well-trod examinations of material culture to look closely at the historical and contemporary intersections of these two disciplines and to provoke cross-disciplinary conversation and collaboration. Deutsch, Christofer Johnson, Michael Lange, John Laudun, Julie M-A LeBlanc, Cassie Patterson, Rahima Schwenkbeck, Amy Shuman, Irene Sotiropoulou, Zhao Yuanhao
