Landes' and Richard Howard's own notes on the translation and interpretation of the French words sens and langue. In the essays that follow, Rabourdin intertwines insights from both phenomenology and translation studies, engaging in notions of space, body, sense, and language as filtered through a multilingual lens and drawing on a diversity of sources, including work from such figures as Jacques Derrida, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Henri Poincaré, Michel Butor, Caroline Bergvall, Jean-Jacques Lecercle, Louis Wolfson and Lisa Robertson. This interdisciplinary thematic perspective highlights the need for an understanding of the experience of translation as neither distinctly linguistic or spatial but one which fluidly allows for the bilingual body to sense and make sense. This book offers a unique contribution to translation studies, comparative literature, French studies, and philosophy of language and will be of particular interest to students and scholars in these fields.

The present volume represents a departure from other works in at least two ways. First, it brings in discourses around bodies per se into language-related research, a realm that previous research has not directly engaged. Calling attention to a host of discourses – biomedical, societal, poststructuralist – and drawing on a variety of disciplinary perspectives, critical theories, ethnographically gathered materials, and extant data, the chapters pierce the general veil of silence that we have collectively drawn regarding how some of our most intimate body (dis)functions impact our everyday living and sense of "normalcy".

The book analyses the clinical communication and interpretation process from a new point of view. Clinical consultation through an interpreter can be divided into bilingual and trilingual communication. Bilingual communication means that the interpreter and the patient have the same mother tongue; thus, two languages are involved in communication: the patient’s and the health provider’s languages. In trilingual clinical encounters, the patient and interpreter have different mother tongues but both know a common language. In that case, three languages will be involved in the communication: patient’s, interpreter’s, and caregivers’ languages. The interpretation process is doubled; first the patient must encode her/his language inside the brain (internal encoding), then the interpreter must interpret the message into the caregiver’s language (external encoding). The risk of misunderstandings in trilingual communication is significantly higher than in bilingual communication. The book explores the difficulties involved in multilingual communication in a medical context, and will be of use to medical professionals and those in the field of language studies.
