Book excerpt: This dissertation is a historical ethnography that examines the social transformation of Bodh Gaya into a World Heritage site. On June 26, 2002, the Mahabodhi Temple Complex at Bodh Gaya was formally inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. As a place of cultural heritage and a monument of "outstanding universal value" this inclusion has reinforced the ancient significance of Bodh Gaya as the place of Buddha's enlightenment. In this dissertation, I take this recent event as a framing device for my historical and ethnographic analysis that details the varying ways in which Bodh Gaya is constructed out of a particular set of social relations. How do different groups attach meaning to Bodh Gaya's space and negotiate the multiple claims and memories embedded in place? How is Bodh Gaya socially constructed as a global site of memory and how do contests over its spatiality implicate divergent histories, narratives and events? In order to delineate the various historical and spatial meanings that place holds for different groups I examine a set of interrelated transnational processes that are the focus of this dissertation: 1) the emergence of Buddhist monasteries, temples and/or guest houses tied to international pilgrimage; 2) the role of tourism and pilgrimage as a source of economic livelihood for local residents; and 3) the role of state tourism development and urban planning. Based on my analysis of these social constituencies I argue that World Heritage sites, like the Mahabodhi Temple Complex, are important global spaces of convergence where history, memory, narratives and groups are entangled through UNESCO's universal claims. It is for these reasons that it is important to look beyond the universal abstraction and examine the ways in which spaces of global memory are laden with social and cultural meaning that is activated, reproduced and contested through a range of social practices. In the 3rd century BC emperor A ? oka built a shrine to mark this spot of Buddha?s sambodhi.A later stone railing enclosing this shrine survives from the u period (1st century BC).Sanchi and Barhut depict the shrine on several reliefs.The shrine was replaced by the Mahabodhi temple,begun in the Kushan period in the 2nd century AD.In the Pala-Sena period it was provided with statuary and revetment.Burmese Buddhists began to restore it in 1877,but a proper scientific restoration was done by Cunningham in 1882. Dr.Rajendralala Mitra visited Buddha Gaya in 1877 in compliance with the wishes of the Lt.Governor of Bengal.He was the first to draw up maps,plans and to compile a record of its archaeology.The present work was thus the first attempt at a scientific study of the site,its monuments and antiquities,as well as its descriptions in Buddhist texts and Puranas.It describes the geography, buildings,ancient structures,and the religious legends of Gaya.It is still the only work to give an extensive account of the importance of Gaya in Buddhais enlightenment.The architectural remains,sculptures,carvings on railings, copings and pillars, inscriptions from the earliest period,and chronology are detailed by R.Mitra. The book retains its value in understanding the vicissitudes of the reconstruction of the Mahabodhi and surrounding buildings,its centrality in the Enlightenment of Lord Buddha and its role as the centrum of the Buddhist world.This work inspired Sir A.Cunningham to a complete overhauling of the temple and its environs and to write his monograph Mahabodhi in 1892.In 1935 A.K.Coomaraswamy wrote La Sculpture de Bodhgaya ,followed by Barua,Gaya and Buddha Gaya in 1931.Yet,this work of R.Mitra remains a fundamental historic survey of Buddha Gaya over two millennia.It has long been a desideratum and the present reprint is most welcome as a basic work, with 51 monochrome plates of the 19th century.
