Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2023 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 2,7, Leuphana Universität Lüneburg, language: English, abstract: Recent events such as the 15th Conference of Parties (COP15) and the European Green Deal have brought biodiversity issues to the forefront of international and European agendas, with increasing pressure on companies to improve their disclosure and performance related to biodiversity. With growing focus on the relationship between board gender diversity (BGD) and environmental performance, this study investigates the effect of BGD on biodiversity disclosure (BD). This research explores the relationship between BGD and BD by analysing a sample of 2,793 firm-year observations from European non-financial companies listed on the European STOXX600 index from 2009 to 2020. A three-way fixed-effects ordered logistic regression model was employed, incorporating legitimacy and critical mass theory. The results demonstrate a positive association between BGD and BD, with a stronger relationship for companies in exploitative industries. However, there was no support found for the critical mass theory, and no mediating effect of environmental trainings or partnerships was detected. These findings highlight the importance of gender diversity in promoting sensitivity to societal and institutional concerns, as well as the need for increased transparency and accountability in companies' reporting and actions related to biodiversity. The study's implications call for companies to take proactive measures in promoting diversity and sustainability to meet growing regulatory and stakeholder demands.

Book excerpt: The 4th World Conference on Women, held in Beijing in 1995, officially adopted the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action for Equality, Development and Peace (BPfA). The BPfA outlines strategic objectives and actions to be taken by the international community, national governments and civil society for the promotion and protection of human rights for women and the girl child as inalienable, integral and indivisible elements of universal human rights and fundamental freedoms of all women throughout their lives. By signing up to the document, the 27 Member States of the European Union (EU) officially acknowledged their responsibility for taking action to implement the BPfA and undertook to monitor and report on progress in each of the areas of concern. Although primary responsibility for the advancement of women lies with national governments, the EU was involved in drawing up the Beijing Declaration and supports its Member States in taking action. Since 2010 the European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE) has been supporting the Presidencies of the Council of the European Union in the follow-up to the BPfA. Denmark, which holds the Presidency of the Council of the EU during the first half of 2012, decided, in cooperation with the Commission, the High Level Group on Gender Mainstreaming and EIGE to review the area entitled Women and the Environment focusing on gender equality and climate change and thereby to propose indicators in this area. Two important dimensions of objective K.1 have been considered: women's participation in climate change decision making at the national, EU and international levels, and the proportion of women tertiary graduates in scientific and technical fields related to climate change. This summary presents the main findings of the report -- EU Bookshop.

Book excerpt: The Committee previously conducted an inquiry into mandatory quotas for women on corporate boards, offering its view on the expected Commission proposal before it was published on 14 November 2012 (HL 58, session 2012-13, ISBN 9780108476235). The Committee has objected to the proposal on the grounds that the efforts made by businesses and governments at national level, mean that action at EU level is unnecessary. More than a third of people appointed to FTSE 100 boards last year were women, and FTSE 100 companies are expecting to see a quarter of their board positions taken by women by 2015. Across the EU as a whole, the proportion of women on boards has risen by 16% since 2010. Business leaders and national governments need to be given a chance to build upon these efforts before we consider quotas. The Committee suggests that the proposal does not adequately take into account the different rates of change, board structures and cultural contexts within each Member State. It reiterates support for the aim of increasing gender diversity on boards, but says that the Commission could usefully assist national Governments through other means, such as issuing a non-binding Recommendation to Member States, and taking further action where individual Member States fail to comply with their obligations to combat discrimination. The Committee maintains that the proposal does not comply with the principle of subsidiarity, which means that legislation should be made at the lowest appropriate level - in this case, by each country.

However, recent studies of the Federation of Olympic Sports in Europe have shown that women occupy only fourteen percent of decision-making positions in sport organizations. This book presents a comprehensive and comparative study of how various regions and countries of Europe have addressed this lack of gender diversity, discussing which strategies have brought about change and to what extent these changes have been successful. With contributions from leading sport sociologists, covering countries such as Germany, Hungary, Norway, Poland, Spain, Turkey and the UK, it provides a foundation for future policymaking, methodological analyses and theoretical developments that can result in sustainable gender equality in European sport governance. Gender Diversity in European Sport Governance is important reading for scholars and students in the fields of sociology of sport, sport management, sociology, gender studies and studies of organization, management and leadership. It is also a valuable resource for policy makers in the EU, as well as national sport organizations and activists.

Book excerpt: It is frequently hypothesized that environmental management systems (EMSs) may improve a firm's environmental performance. Whether or not this hypothesis is true is as important from the perspective of environmental policy as questions relating to the relevant incentives for (1) a firm's voluntary adoption of an EMS and (2) its environmental innovation behavior. Based on ample empirical evidence for German manufacturing, this paper addresses these issues on the basis of a recursive bivariate probit model that explicitly takes into account that a facility's decision on innovation activities is correlated with the decision on EMS certification. Our empirical results indicate that environmental innovation activities are not associated with EMS certification nor any other single policy instrument. Rather, innovation behavior seems to be correlated to the stringency of environmental policy.

Book excerpt: This book investigates how corporate governance is directing the internal audit function (IAF) adaptation as a response to enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems. To date, there is insufficient knowledge about the adaptations of the IAF, which are required if it is to maintain its essential role as a governance mechanism. This book extends the reader’s knowledge by exploring and theorising the adaptation of the IAF after ERP introduction and points towards future trends. Adopting an institutional approach, it analyses how the IAF responds to the external governance pressures and the internal pressures of the control logic following the introduction of an ERP system. Featuring data from two listed companies in the food and beverage sector and two large banks operating in Egypt, this volume will be of interest to researchers and academics in the field of financing and ERP systems in particular.

It includes censuses of women directors in a number of countries, identifies reasons for their limited numbers, indicates why appointing qualified women to boards offers competitive advantages, and suggests practical ways corporations can attract, recruit and appoint more women board members. Researchers interested in gender and corporate governance issues, companies interested in increasing their numbers of women board members, and women and men serving or hoping to serve on corporate boards will find this book of interest.

Book excerpt: This comprehensive overview of local food systems explores alternative definitions of local food, estimates market size and reach, describes the characteristics of local consumers and producers, and examines early indications of the economic and health impacts of local food systems. Defining ¿local¿ based on marketing arrangements, such as farmers selling directly to consumers at regional farmers¿ markets or to schools, is well recognized. Statistics suggest that local food markets account for a small, but growing, share of U.S. agricultural production. For smaller farms, direct marketing to consumers accounts for a higher percentage of their sales than for larger farms. Charts and tables.

Book excerpt: "UNESCO has recently published the third volume of its Education on the Move series, a series dedicated to the analysis of key trends in education with the hope of inspiring dialogue among policy makers, educators and other key stakeholders on the challenges of education for tomorrow. The latest publication, entitled Unleashing the Potential: Transforming Technical and Vocational Education and Training is focused entirely on issues related to technical and vocational education and training (TVET). It takes stock of the steadily increasing demands and expectations on TVET systems around the globe and presents recent policy trends in the field of TVET. In their analysis, the authors provide insights into what it takes to unleash the potential of TVET systems around the world. They propose an integrated analytical approach that takes into consideration such factors as economic growth, social equity and issues related to sustainability so that TVET can contribute more effectively to contemporary policy issues such as youth unemployment, gender disparities and climate change. Overall, the book calls for a transformation of TVET systems to enable them to respond to the demands of their contexts. This transformation should enable TVET systems to acquire agility to stay current and responsive to the rapidly changing demands of the twenty-first century."--Publisher's website.
