In the early 1920s, the mass production of automobiles lowered their cost to the point where sidecar-equipped motorcycles could no longer compete. The Flxible Company used this challenge as an opportunity to enter the bus-building business. The first Flxible bus was built in 1924, and was among only a few Flxibles built in the 1920s. The real boost in Flxible's bus production came in 1936 with the introduction of the Flxible Airway coach, mounted on a Chevrolet truck chassis. Read and see photos of the Flxible Airway coaches and other Flxible intercity buses like the Clipper, Visicoach, C-37, Starliner, Vistaliner, Hi-level models, Flxliner, and more.

It conveys in pictures the roller-coaster story of the eclectic mix of people and their cars that came to Nassau to enjoy each other's company at the end of the motor racing season in America. From its stuttering start in 1954, though its halcyon days in the late 1950s, to its demise in 1966, top drivers from America and Europe came to compete in the races.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of Dinky Toys, Corgi Toys and other makers of diecast metal cars has been covered in great detail in many books and magazine articles; by contrast, information on plastic toy cars is much harder to come by. Yet collectors are taking an increasing interest in plastic cars, particularly as the rise in the value of early diecast and tinplate models has put many of these out of reach of the average enthusiast. For the first time, this book aims to provide a systematic introduction to the vast number of plastic cars made during the 1950s and 1960s. Years of research have enabled the author to uncover many fascinating facts about the companies who made these toys. Some were major players in the toy industry, like Tri-ang and Brimtoy in the UK, Norev and Minialuxe in France, Gama and Siku in Germany and Ingap in Italy. Many others, though, were more obscure, and some only modeled one car before disappearing without trace. More than 250 photographs of these toys are included, with the emphasis being on the most colorful and realistic examples, all of them based on real vehicles of the period. In many cases, the toy is pictured alongside its original box, the presence of which can often double the value of the item to a collector. Readers will also find a handy glossary listing the names of many of the companies who were active in this field in the 1950s and 1960s, together with some evocative period advertisements and catalogue illustrations. If you thought that a model car had to be made of diecast metal to be worth collecting, this book might change your mind . . . With 250 color photos, extensive appendices and identification aids this is a must have for any collector or dealer.

Book excerpt: Designed with the modeller, preservationist and the wargamer in mind, Ian Allan Publishing's 'In Detail' series is intended to provide readers with a comprehensive history of the type of tank, self-propelled gun and military transport featured. Each volume will include a detailed history of the unit in service, along with information on variants, markings, unit alllocations etc. Alongside the comprehensive illustrative section, which includes detailed shots of models in colour, the book will also include scale drawings and comprehensive guidance notes on camouflage. As a valuable part of its Blitzkrieg tactics, the German army deployed light armoured cars in the forward reconnaissance role. The success of these vehicles led to the requirement for a heavy armoured car - the SdKfz series. This advanced design eight-wheel drive and steering entered service in 1938 and was unique in another way; it was the first military vehicle to have two driving positions - a front and a rear. Development continued through the war years and in 1942 the 234 series entered service. These were much improved vehicles with better armour and more powerful armament. The 231/234 series spurred the US Army to develop its own eight-wheel armoured car, the Boarhound. A direct descendant of the 8 Rad, the Schwerer Panzersphawagen Luchs, remains in service with the German Army of today.

Book excerpt: The Buzz Number system, the famous identification system for U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force aircraft from late 1945 into the mid-1960s, was developed as a deterrent to 8th Air Force pilots engaged in unauthorized low-level flying over post-war Europe. This practice, called 'buzzing', prompted the need for ground observers to be able to identify and report a particular offending aircraft. In response to this need, a system of letters and numbers was developed to uniquely identify each aircraft in inventory. This book includes an in-depth explanation of the buzz number system as well as its many applications. This book is the ultimate buzz number reference for modelers and aviation enthusiasts.
