Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most visited site in the National Park system, the 469-mile Blue Ridge Parkway winds along the ridges of the Appalachian mountains in Virginia and North Carolina. According to most accounts, the Parkway was a New Deal "Godsend for the needy," built without conflict or opposition by landscape architects and planners who traced their vision along a scenic, isolated southern landscape. The historical archives relating to this massive public project, however, tell a different and much more complicated story, which Anne Mitchell Whisnant relates in this revealing history of the beloved roadway.
Book Synopsis The Blue Book on Information Age Inquiry, Instruction and Literacy by : Daniel Callison
Download or read book The Blue Book on Information Age Inquiry, Instruction and Literacy written by Daniel Callison and published by Libraries Unlimited. This book was released on 2006-09-30 with total page 666 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on many years of columns from School Library Media Activities Monthly , authors, Daniel Callison and Leslie Preddy present key terms in a working theoretical model that may be used in developing and understanding the power of information inquiry in instruction. This book is both a revision and an update to Key Words, Concepts and Methods for Information Age Instruction (LMS Associates, 2003). New columns from School Library Media Activities Monthly are included and entirely new key words for instruction are introduced. These key terms have immediate value for staff development purposes. They are reproducible and can be used in building year-long study group programmes in schools and libraries or as weekly discussion handouts. An entirely new section on inquiry has been added. An in-depth and invaluable section of resources and web sites has been updated. In addition to the theoretical base, the authors include much practical instructional application for immediate use. The Blue Book on Information Age Inquiry, Instruction and Literacy is the new definitive work on information inquiry and information literacy instruction. The authors have thoughtfully blended theories in education and library science in a book that finally gives us a picture of the huge role of the school library media specialist as both a teacher and a librarian who needs to understand, interpret and instruct students in the skill of inquiry, the basis of all learning. -- Back cover.

Book Synopsis The Blood of Government by : Paul A. Kramer
Download or read book The Blood of Government written by Paul A. Kramer and published by ReadHowYouWant.com. This book was released on 2009-07-17 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1899 the United States, having announced its arrival as a world power during the Spanish-Cuban-American War, inaugurated a brutal war of imperial conquest against the Philippine Republic. Over the next five decades, U.S. imperialists justified their colonial empire by crafting novel racial ideologies adapted to new realities of collaboration and anticolonial resistance. In this path breaking, transnational study, Paul A. Kramer reveals how racial politics served U.S. empire, and how empire-building in turn transformed ideas of race and nation in both the United States and the Philippines. Kramer argues that Philippine-American colonial history was characterized by struggles over sovereignty and recognition. In the wake of a racial-exterminist war, U.S. colonialists, in dialogue with Filipino elites, divided the Philippine population into ''civilized'' Christians and ''savage'' animists and Muslims. The former were subjected to a calibrated colonialism that gradually extended them self-government as they demonstrated their ''capacities.'' The latter were governed first by Americans, then by Christian Filipinos who had proven themselves worthy of shouldering the ''white man's burden.'' Ultimately, however, this racial vision of imperial nation-building collided with U.S. nativist efforts to insulate the United States from its colonies, even at the cost of Philippine independence. Kramer provides an innovative account of the global transformations of race and the centrality of empire to twentieth-century U.S. and Philippine histories.

Book Synopsis Red and Blue Nation? by : Pietro S. Nivola
Download or read book Red and Blue Nation? written by Pietro S. Nivola and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2008-04-01 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Brookings Institution Press and the Hoover Institution publication America's polarized politics are largely disconnected from mainstream public preferences. This disconnect poses fundamental dangers for the representativeness and accountability of government, as well as the already withering public trust in it. As the 2008 presidential race kicks into gear, the political climate certainly will not become less polarized. With important issues to address—including immigration policy, health care, and the funding of the Iraq war—it is critical that essential policies not be hostage to partisan political battles. Building upon the findings of the first volume of Red and Blue Nation? (Brookings, 2006), which explored the extent of political polarization and its potential causes, this new volume delves into the consequences of the gulf between "red states" and "blue states." The authors examine the impact of these political divisions on voter behavior, Congressional law-making, judicial selection, and foreign policy formation. They shed light on hotly debated institutional reform proposals—including changes to the electoral system and the congressional rules of engagement—and ultimately present research-supported policies and reforms for alleviating the underlying causes of political polarization. While most discussion of polarization takes place in separate spheres of journalism and academia, Red and Blue Nation? brings together a unique set of voices with a wide variety of perspectives to enrich our understanding of the issue. Written in a broad, accessible style, it is a resource for anyone interested in the future of electoral politics in America. Contributors include Marc Hetherington and John G. Geer (Vanderbilt University), Deborah Jordan Brooks (Dartmouth College), Martin P. Wattenberg (University of California, Irvine), Barbara Sinclair and Joel D. Aberbach (UCLA), Christopher H. Foreman (University of Maryland), Keith Krehbiel (Stanford University), Sarah A. Binder, Benjamin Wittes, Jonathan Rauch, and William A. Ga
