Book excerpt: Even more than we might realize, the Garden of Eden story has supplied the foundation for Western civilization ever since the Roman Emperor Theodosius the Great granted the orthodox version of Christianity imperial support in the fourth century AD. Faced with the scientific and economic challenges of the 21st century, however, it's time to revisit our traditional understanding of our Christian heritage. St. Augustine's monumental work, "The City of God," built on his original sin interpretation of the Garden of Eden story, traditionally defined the role of the responsible individual living within the resulting, orthodox structure. But what is the role of such an individual living in an era that has witnessed the waning of the power and influence of that institutional authority-the authority built on Augustine's persuasive interpretation of the events described in the Garden of Eden story? Without throwing the baby out with the bath water, and by paying homage to Augustinian sacrifice and commitment to belief, Eden and the Individual: Christianity for the 21st Century explores that question. In the process it offers creative conclusions directed toward enhancing the meaning, and value, of individual lives. Given a fresh sense of purpose, every individual can then work toward creating, and preserving, the order and structure that have governed collective Western life. "In this awe-inspiring chronicle, indeed revelation of Christianity Misapplied, Mr. Mihelich, courageously, has given us a pearl to keep for ourselves. And we must." Book excerpt: The broad sweep of environmental and ecological history has until now been written and understood in predominantly male terms. In Made From This Earth, Vera Norwood explores the relationship of women to the natural environment through the work of writers, illustrators, landscape and garden designers, ornithologists, botanists, biologists, and conservationists. Norwood begins by showing that the study and promotion of botany was an activity deemed appropriate for women in the early 1800s. After highlighting the work of nineteenth-century scientific illustrators and garden designers, she focuses on nature's advocates such as Rachel Carson and Dian Fossey who differed strongly with men on both women's "nature" and the value of the natural world. These women challenged the dominant, male-controlled ideologies, often framing their critique with reference to values arising from the female experience. Norwood concludes with an analysis of the utopian solutions posed by ecofeminists, the most recent group of women to contest men over the meaning and value of nature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Even a diehard urbanite would likely be seduced by this extraordinary chronicle of the plant kingdom . . . " —Publishers Weekly " . . . much more than the fascinating story of plant life . . . It is also a book about the resilience of life itself, the mystery and power of the unseen energy appearing in the visible world in a marvelous variety of forms." —Audubon Naturalist News "Here is Mr. Peattie at his superb best. . . . [H]e makes the story of botany and its pursuit as fascinating to the reader as it is to him, and the reading of it a delight." —Hartford Times "[Peattie] belongs with Gilbert White, Thoreau, John Burroughs, W. H. Hudson, Richard Jeffries, and John Muir." —Mark van Doren First published in 1939, this beautifully imaginative book is about botany much in the same sense that Walden is about a pond. Part natural history, part biography, and part philosophical reflection, Flowering Earth is written in a warm, lyrical style that made poet-scientist Donald Culross Peattie one of America's best-known naturalist writers.
