Book Synopsis Fields Watered with Blood by : Margaret Walker
Download or read book Fields Watered with Blood written by Margaret Walker and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2014-06-01 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Representing an international gathering of scholars, Fields Watered with Blood constitutes the first critical assessment of the full scope of Margaret Walker’s literary career. As they discuss Walker’s work, including the landmark poetry collection For My People and the novel Jubilee, the contributors reveal the complex interplay of concerns and themes in Walker’s writing: folklore and prophecy, place and space, history and politics, gender and race. In addition, the contributors remark on how Walker’s emphases on spirituality and on dignity in her daily life make themselves felt in her writings and show how Walker’s accomplishments as a scholar, teacher, activist, mother, and family elder influenced what and how she wrote. A brief biography, an interview with literary critic Claudia Tate, a chronology of major events in Walker’s life, and a selected bibliography round out this collection, which will do much to further our understanding of the writer whom poet Nikki Giovanni once called “the most famous person nobody knows.”

Book excerpt: Trapping was becoming a dying trade and not many could make it in such a harsh life. But Joshua Walker had worked these mountains and streams most of his adult life and preferred it, to what was becoming the new progressive way of living. With winter coming on soon he knew the much-feared Arikara Indians would be making way to their wintering camps so he skirted their country in search of place to set his traps and settle in for the winter himself. Just as he had begun his travels, he encountered something that bewildered him and upon closer inspection he bore witness to a grizzly scene that would alter his destiny forever.

Book Synopsis Middle English Devotional Compilations by : Diana Denissen
Download or read book Middle English Devotional Compilations written by Diana Denissen and published by University of Wales Press. This book was released on 2019-10-15 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Middle English devotional compilations – consisting of a series of texts or extracts of texts that have intentionally been put together to constitute new and unified devotional texts – have often been approached as complex collections of source texts that need to be linked with their originals. This book argues that the study of compilations should move beyond the disentanglement of their sources. It approaches compiling as a literary activity and an active way of shaping the medieval text, with the aim to nuance scholarly discussion about compiling by putting greater emphasis on the literary instead of the technical aspects of compiling activity. In addition to describing the additions, omissions and other types of adaptations that compilers made to their source texts, Middle English Devotional Compilations highlights the nature and function of compiling activity in late medieval England, and examines three major but understudied Middle English devotional compilations in depth: The Pore Caitif, The Tretyse of Love and A Talkyng of the Love of God.
