Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Believers know that when we die we enter heaven and will spend eternity there with God and the saints who have gone before us. But what actually happens in heaven? What are we going to be doing there? Won't it get boring at some point? According to Scripture, a large part of our experience of heaven will be a continual revealing of God's glory. Not just his glory in the moment, but during all of time. The mysteries of providence, the hidden movements of God throughout history, and the forgotten and unnoted works of even the most obscure of God's people will be unveiled so that we can see how wise, loving, gracious, and powerful our God is. And though we will experience perfection in heaven, we will never be omniscient, which means we will always be learning more about God's glory, inspiring us to return joyful praise and thanksgiving. If your vision of heaven has been limited to clouds and harps and angels, it's time to expand that view with the truth found in this biblically based look at the afterlife.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Christianity Today 1999 Book of the Year Every reader of the Bible has encountered the powerful, comforting and sometimes puzzling imagery of Scripture. These concrete pictures with their hidden force have struck sharp and lasting impressions on our minds. Their imprint has etched itself on the language and grammar of Christian faith and Western culture. Why then do traditional Bible dictionaries and reference works offer so little help to explorers of the Bible's galaxy of verbal pictures? They excel in describing the climate, borders and location of Galilee or Sinai. But they are often blind to the artistic expressions and deaf to the musical meanings that echo from within the world of the biblical text. The Dictionary of Biblical Imagery is the first contemporary reference work dedicated to exploring the images, symbols, motifs, metaphors and literary patterns found in the Bible. More than that, it examines the Bible's universal archetypes or master images--including the plot motifs and character types that recur throughout life, literature and the Bible. This unique dictionary explores the dazzling variety in which the Word of God comes dressed in clothes of everyday life. It traces the trail of images from Eden to the New Jerusalem. It captures the plotted patterns of biblical narrative. It surveys the imaged texture of each book of the Bible. In short, The Dictionary of Biblical Imagery is an inviting, enlightening and indispensable companion to the reading, study, contemplation and enjoyment of the Bible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peter O'Malley is a young eighteenaEUR"yearaEUR"old Irishman who lives on the outskirts of Limerick during the potato famine in Ireland. His family had many struggles, and being evicted by an absentee landlord was just one of them. The night before his family was to leave their threeaEUR"hundredaEUR"yearaEUR"old ancestral cottage, his parents were murdered. Being the last of his Irish clan, his anguish, torment, and pain is unbearable as he lashes out and burns the family cottage. Before leaving their land, he surveys the burned cottage and finds a leather pouch with a letter dating back to the sixteenth century speaking of gold and hidden treasures. Several lords try to murder him, but God has different plans for Peter. Divine intervention saves his life, and Peter is ordered to leave the island and tossed a gold Knight Templars coin. He travels to Cork and inadvertently saves the life of Captain Doyle, owner of a brigantine ship known as The Trinity. The captain convinces Peter to sail with him to London and then to America. During that short layover, he is apprehended by the Queen of England's guards outside Westminster Chapter House and is brought before Queen Victoria. She sends him on an errand that nearly costs him his life. He makes his way back to The Trinity, and they sail for America, only to be forced to flee north to Canada by a hurricane. Peter meets the love of his life, Kimberly O'Leary, at Duggal's Irish pub and finds a job as a blacksmith, but typhus fever is rampant and eventually forces them into the vast Canadian wilderness. They want to trap and sell beaver the following year, but they accidently discover gold; it alters their plans, but not God's plan. He will have the final word.

Book excerpt: As a child, Elias Chacour lived in a small Palestinian village in Galilee. When tens of thousands of Palestinians were killed and nearly one million forced into refugee camps in 1948, Elias began a long struggle with how to respond. In Blood Brothers, he blends his riveting life story with historical research to reveal a little-known side of the Arab-Israeli conflict, touching on questions such as: •What behind-the-scenes politics touched off the turmoil in the Middle East? •What does Bible prophecy really have to say? •Can bitter enemies ever be reconciled? Now updated with commentary on the current state of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, as well as a new foreword by Lynne Hybels and Gabe Lyons, this book offers hope and insight that can help each of us learn to live at peace in a world of tension and terror.
