Having been an obedient, good boy all his life, he rebels against his approaching thirtieth year. He divorces Barbara and seeks to discover his capabilities with women and life as a very active member of the Ski Club in Baltimore. Dan learns lessons about love and life in his process. Both can be good or bad. Dan learns from single women who are familiar with the realities of life. These women provide him with sober lessons. While sobriety is offered as a way of life, Dan chooses to continue his journey on a pathway to Hell. He does not believe in Hell so continues his love affair with alcohol. Many available women feel jilted by him and leave his life. Dan finds sanctuary with a group who become his undoing. Paradoxically, they become his family as he experiences love like he never had before. Dans family is the Irish American Defense League. His brothers are Jimmy, Biff, and Grunt, the Head of the IADL and his BullDogs. Dan builds a team of five women and a sixteen-year-old orphan boy. They become a Hit team of which Dan is the Lead. The team feels justified as they eliminate pedophiles and child abusers. Dan learns that there is no justification when one loses their soul.
Download or read book On Blondes written by Joanna Pitman and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2008-12-18 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Fascinating ...Pitman skillfully navigates the complicated history of our addiction to fair hair, skipping through the centuries with an elegant touch' Independent 'Riveting ... provocative ... ON BLONDES is ultimately a study of power-and powerlessness-between the sexes ... travelling undercover, this brunette produced a book which, like its subject, is wonderfully enlightening' Telegraph In art and literature, in history and popular culture, blonde has never been a mere colour. For 2,500 years, it has been a blazing signal and around this obsession entire industries have developed, influential trends set. From Greek prostitutes mimicking the golden-haired Aphrodite, to the Californian beach babe; from pigeon-dung and saffron dyes to L'Oreal - because you're worth it - we see the lengths to which women will go to become blonde. The power and duality of the blonde as either erotic symbol or saintly virgin waxes and wanes but never disappears. Weaving a story rich in anecdote, history and high intrigue, Joanna Pitman effortlessly combines the wealth of her knowledge with a sharp and clear-sighted view of the power of the blonde throughout the ages.

Download or read book Bloomer Girls written by Debra A Shattuck and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2017-01-18 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Disapproving scolds. Sexist condescension. Odd theories about the effect of exercise on reproductive organs. Though baseball began as a gender-neutral sport, girls and women of the nineteenth century faced many obstacles on their way to the diamond. Yet all-female nines took the field everywhere. Debra A. Shattuck pulls from newspaper accounts and hard-to-find club archives to reconstruct a forgotten era in baseball history. Her fascinating social history tracks women players who organized baseball clubs for their own enjoyment and even found roster spots on men's teams. Entrepreneurs, meanwhile, packaged women's teams as entertainment, organizing leagues and barnstorming tours. If the women faced financial exploitation and indignities like playing against men in women's clothing, they and countless ballplayers like them nonetheless staked a claim to the nascent national pastime. Shattuck explores how the determination to take their turn at bat thrust female players into narratives of the women's rights movement and transformed perceptions of women's physical and mental capacity. Vivid and eye-opening, Bloomer Girls is a first-of-its-kind portrait of America, its women, and its game.

Book excerpt: Red is a brilliantly told, captivating history of red hair throughout the ages. A book that breaks new ground, dispels myths, and reinforces the special nature of being a redhead, with a look at multiple disciplines, including science, religion, politics, feminism and sexuality, literature, and art. With an obsessive fascination that is as contagious as it is compelling, author Jacky Colliss Harvey (herself a redhead) begins her exploration of red hair in prehistory and traces the redhead gene as it made its way out of Africa with the early human diaspora to its emergence under Northern skies. She goes on to explore red hair in the ancient world; the prejudice manifested against red hair across medieval Europe; red hair during the Renaissance as both an indicator of Jewishness during the Inquisition and the height of fashion in Protestant England, under the reign of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I; the modern age of art and literature, and the first positive symbols of red hair in children's characters; modern medicine and science and the genetic and chemical decoding of red hair; and finally, red hair in contemporary culture, from advertising and exploitation to "gingerism" and the new movement against bullying.
