Book excerpt: Blockchain technology is powering our future. As the technology behind cryptocurrencies like bitcoin and Facebook's Libra, open software platforms like Ethereum, and disruptive companies like Ripple, it’s too important to ignore. In this revelatory book, Don Tapscott, the bestselling author of Wikinomics, and his son, blockchain expert Alex Tapscott, bring us a brilliantly researched, highly readable, and essential book about the technology driving the future of the economy. Blockchain is the ingeniously simple, revolutionary protocol that allows transactions to be simultaneously anonymous and secure by maintaining a tamperproof public ledger of value. Though it’s best known as the technology that drives bitcoin and other digital currencies, it also has the potential to go far beyond currency, to record virtually everything of value to humankind, from birth and death certificates to insurance claims, land titles, and even votes. Blockchain is also essential to understand if you’re an artist who wants to make a living off your art, a consumer who wants to know where that hamburger meat really came from, an immigrant who’s tired of paying big fees to send money home to your loved ones, or an entrepreneur looking for a new platform to build a business. And those examples are barely the tip of the iceberg. As with major paradigm shifts that preceded it, blockchain technology will create winners and losers. This book shines a light on where it can lead us in the next decade and beyond.

Book excerpt: The dominance of trusted intermediaries could be weakened by blockchain, a distributed ledger technology, one of the functions of which is to constitute timestamped proofs by replacing inter-individual trust with algorithmic trust. Blockchain self-executing smart contracts allow us to rethink the practice in the domain of e-commerce, interbank communication, fundraising (and ICOs), justice (timestamping evidence, acts authenticated by blockchain) and businesses in numerous sectors (entertainment, AI, health, real estate, tourism, transport, etc.) which attempt to propose new services by benefiting from blockchains. This book aims to put into perspective the technical innovations and the uses brought about by blockchain, by identifying that which has a medium- or long-term impact, all while taking into account the social, economic, judicial and administrative resistances that are likely to develop.

Book excerpt: Blockchain is the first technology in several decades to attract the current level of excitement around its capabilities and its potential to completely alter business processes. Since its inception in 2009 as the underlying technology for Bitcoin, interest has recently heightened and companies are now attempting to utilize blockchain to combat business use cases in a variety of industries and across many disciplines, including financial services, supply chain and government. However, this technology is still in early developmental stages, as is apparent with its many challenges and lack of successful use cases. This thesis will provide a comprehensive overview of blockchain technology. It will then present a comparison of the current industrys development to the rise of the Internet. Furthermore, this thesis will identify and analyze the challenges surrounding blockchain technology and its position as the industry develops prior to acceptance and full-scale adoption. Finally, it will also offer a prediction related to the use cases that may experience success in the near future, along with an observation as to why some projects are failing.

Book excerpt: The new book from one of TIME's 2021 most influential people Author was in Forbes 30 Under 30 Hall of Fame "A crucial contribution to development of a new technology that will impact all of our lives.” –Laura Shin, host of the Unchained podcast and author of The Cryptopians: Idealism, Greed, Lies, and the Making of the First Big Cryptocurrency Craze “Vitalik Buterin is one of the most influential creators of our generation....Like most of his work, it is sure to become a must-read.”–Camila Russo, author of The Infinite Machine, founder of The Defiant The ideas behind Ethereum in the words of its founder, describing a radical vision for more than a digital currency—reinventing organizations, economics, and democracy itself in the age of the internet. When he was only nineteen years old, in late 2013, Vitalik Buterin published a visionary paper outlining the ideas behind what would become Ethereum. He proposed to take what Bitcoin did for currency—replace government and corporate power with power shared among users—and apply it to everyday apps, organizations, and society as a whole. Now, less than a decade later, Ethereum is the second-most-valuable cryptocurrency and serves as the foundation for the weird new world of NFT artworks, virtual real estate in the metaverse, and decentralized autonomous organizations. The essays in Proof of Stake have guided Ethereum’s community of radicals and builders. Here for the first time they are collected from across the internet for new readers. They reveal Buterin as a lively, creative thinker, relentlessly curious and adventuresome in exploring the consequences of his invention. His writing stands in contrast to the hype that so often accompanies crypto in the public imagination. He presents it instead as a fascinating set of social, economic, and political possibilities, opening a window into a conversation that far more of us could be having. Media scholar Nathan Schneider provides introductions and notes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How the blockchain—a system built on foundations of mutual mistrust—can become trustworthy. The blockchain entered the world on January 3, 2009, introducing an innovative new trust architecture: an environment in which users trust a system—for example, a shared ledger of information—without necessarily trusting any of its components. The cryptocurrency Bitcoin is the most famous implementation of the blockchain, but hundreds of other companies have been founded and billions of dollars invested in similar applications since Bitcoin's launch. Some see the blockchain as offering more opportunities for criminal behavior than benefits to society. In this book, Kevin Werbach shows how a technology resting on foundations of mutual mistrust can become trustworthy. The blockchain, built on open software and decentralized foundations that allow anyone to participate, seems like a threat to any form of regulation. In fact, Werbach argues, law and the blockchain need each other. Blockchain systems that ignore law and governance are likely to fail, or to become outlaw technologies irrelevant to the mainstream economy. That, Werbach cautions, would be a tragic waste of potential. If, however, we recognize the blockchain as a kind of legal technology that shapes behavior in new ways, it can be harnessed to create tremendous business and social value.

This book was released on 2023-10-30 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A blockchain is a distributed public ledger that records transactions in a series of linked blocks that can be accessed by anyone. Before being added to the chain, the data (block) is time-stamped and verified. Each block builds upon the data in the one before it. The data is very difficult to forge due to the mathematical complexity of the storage system. The legacy of cryptocurrencies has helped turn the cryptographic term "blockchain" into a trendy catchphrase. A lot of people think blockchain is the same thing as cryptocurrencies. The opposite is true. Blockchain is the underlying technology behind cryptocurrencies, but its uses extend well beyond that. Blockchains may be considered for use in situations requiring the validation, auditing, or exchange of data. Here, we survey the literature on integrating blockchain with machine learning, and show that the two may work together successfully and efficiently. Machine learning is an umbrella word that includes a wide range of techniques, such as traditional ML, DL, and RL. As a distributed and append-only ledger system, the blockchain is a natural instrument for sharing and processing large data from multiple sources thanks to the inclusion of smart contracts, which is a crucial component of the infrastructure necessary for big data analysis. When it comes to training and testing machine learning models, blockchain can keep data secure and promote data exchange. In addition, it paves the way for the creation of timely prediction models using several data sources by leveraging distributed computing resources (like IoT). This is crucial for deep learning processes, which need a lot of processing time. However, distributed systems are more difficult to monitor and regulate than centralized ones, and blockchain systems will create a massive quantity of data from a variety of sources. The best blockchain mechanism designs need accurate data analysis and predictions of system behaviors. Data verification, as well as the detection of harmful assaults and dishonest transactions on the blockchain, may be aided by machine learning. There is a lot to gain from studying how to merge the two technologies from different perspectives.

The book takes the untutored reader on a thrilling rollercoaster ride through the complexities and myriad facets of cryptocurrencies. The sub-prime crisis of 2008 and the Cypherpunk movement sets the stage for the advent of the mysterious Satoshi Nakamoto and the release of the first cache of bitcoins. The narrative takes on a Houdini like magical quality as it unravels the skeins of the Dark Web and the secret of the Silk Road. The story of the Mt Gox heist and Nostradamus like prophecies of bitcoin doom add a generous dollop of intrigue to the crypto story. The cryptocurrency regulatory-tax tales of countries like USA, Canada, Japan, Australia, China, India etc give the narrative an intellectual slant. The bitcoin saga ends on an introspective note. The blockchain technology has enormous power to change the world. Whether it will be a benevolent Titan or a Frankenstein monster, only time can tell.

Book excerpt: Amidst the constant stream of overly technical and excitable books heralding a blockchain revolution that’s destined to be more disruptive than the Internet, this book stands apart for its more nuanced take, focusing on the potential for these new technologies to change developing countries for the better. Chain Reaction divides the world into two: for some, blockchain seems a poor substitute for an efficient banking and regulatory system in which transactions are settled instantly and contracts are underpinned by solid institutions. For others, it will be truly life-changing – namely those living in countries where rule of law is weak, concepts of ownership are vague and, consequently, trust in institutions is in scarce supply. With blockchain, we are about to witness a leapfrogging – one that will bring the next billion emerging consumers into the formal economy by creating reliable institutions of contract, ownership and trust among people previously denied such luxuries. The authors humanize the technology by taking the reader on a global journey through a multitude of applications – from registering property to voting and delivering aid. In place of the usual abstract lessons in complex technology, this book is instead filled with lively anecdotes of places where trust is so weak that a crisp dollar bill sells at a premium to a better-used version. The book’s goal is to create the first truly approachable, entirely comprehensible and enjoyable read on the wonders to come from blockchain.
