Book Synopsis Amorphous Drugs by : Marzena Rams-Baron
Download or read book Amorphous Drugs written by Marzena Rams-Baron and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-06-06 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explains theoretical and technological aspects of amorphous drug formulations. It is intended for all those wishing to increase their knowledge in the field of amorphous pharmaceuticals. Conversion of crystalline material into the amorphous state, as described in this book, is a way to overcome limited water solubility of drug formulations, in this way enhancing the chemical activity and bioavailability inside the body. Written by experts from various fields and backgrounds, the book introduces to fundamental physical aspects (explaining differences between the ordered and the disordered solid states, the enhancement of solubility resulting from drugs amorphization, physical instability and how it can be overcome) as well as preparation and formulation procedures to produce and stabilize amorphous pharmaceuticals. Readers will thus gain a well-funded understanding and find a multi-faceted discussion of the properties and advantages of amorphous drugs and of the challenges in producing and stabilizing them. The book is an ideal source of information for researchers and students as well as professionals engaged in research and development of amorphous pharmaceutical products.
Book Synopsis Astronomy and History Selected Essays by : O. Neugebauer
Download or read book Astronomy and History Selected Essays written by O. Neugebauer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collection of papers assembled here on a variety of topics in ancient and medieval astronomy was originally suggested by Noel Swerdlow of the University of Chicago. He was also instrumental in making a selection* which would, in general, be on the same level as my book The Exact Sciences in Antiquity. It may also provide a general background for my more technical History of Ancient Mathematical Astronomy and for my edition of Astronomi cal Cuneiform Texts. Several of these republished articles were written because I wanted to put to rest well-entrenched historical myths which could not withstand close scrutiny of the sources. Examples are the supposed astronomical origin of the Egyptian calendar (see [9]), the discovery of precession by the Babylonians [16], and the "simplification" of the Ptolemaic system in Copernicus' De Revolutionibus [40]. In all of my work I have striven to present as accurately as I could what the original sources reveal (which is often very different from the received view). Thus, in [32] discussion of the technical terminology illuminates the meaning of an ancient passage which has been frequently misused to support modern theories about ancient heliocentrism; in [33] an almost isolated instance reveals how Greek world-maps really looked; and in [43] the Alexandrian Easter computus, held in awe by many historians, is shown from Ethiopic sources to be based on very simple procedures.

Book Synopsis Life in the Universe by : Monica M. Grady
Download or read book Life in the Universe written by Monica M. Grady and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theme of this book is life in the Universe, focusing on two questions:How did life begin on Earth? Is there life elsewhere in the Universe? In an attempt to find the answers to these questions this book explores the origin and early evolution of the Earth and explains why this is not only of interest in itself, but also guides the search for life beyond the Earth. It looks at the rest of the Solar System, to see whether any other planets or their satellites have life on them today or have supported life in the past. It looks beyond the Solar System, at the evidence for planets around other stars, and how life may be discovered, should it exist, on these extrasolar planets and briefly at the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI).

Book Synopsis Corsets To Camouflage by : Kate Adie
Download or read book Corsets To Camouflage written by Kate Adie and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2004-08-02 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The paciest and most entertaining history book to come my way' Ian McIntyre, The Times 'Riveting and beautifully illustrated' The Lady 'Engrossing . . . far more than a sartorial survey' The Oldie * * * * * * A vivid history of ordinary women and their extraordinary deeds through two world wars and beyond, by From Our Own Correspondent presenter Kate Adie. Uniform is universally seen as both a stamp of authority and of official acceptance. But the sight of a woman in military uniform still provokes controversy. Although more women are now taking prominent roles in combat, the status implied by uniform is often regarded as contrary to the general perception of womanhood. In association with the Imperial War Museum, this is the first book to look at the image of uniformed women, both in conflict and in civilian roles throughout the twentieth century. Kate Adie examines the extraordinary range of jobs that uniformed women have performed, from nursing to the armed services. Through contemporary correspondence and many personal stories she brings the enormous and often unsung achievements of women in uniform vividly to life, and looks at how far women have come in a century which, for them, began restricted in corsets and has ended on the battlefield in camouflage.
