Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some are blind from birth, while others, like Helen Keller, are blinded by illness. Still others lose sight through accidents or progressive disease. I submit no one would choose to go through life without sight. And yet the church today is certainly blindfolded. I do not believe the blindness of the church happened suddenly. There have been brilliant moves of God in the church since the Lord’s ascension. However, it has been a slow, methodical process whereby a blindfold has slipped over the eyes of discernment, and the church chooses to remain in the dark. Why would anyone choose to remain blind? Think of it this way. A child born blind cannot describe the experience of seeing a beautiful rose, the glow of a sunset, the majesty of snowcapped mountains, or a crashing waterfall. There is no desire for sight, having never experienced the sensation. For those that see, we would never choose to be blind and remain so. A blindfold suggests that something has willfully been placed over the eyes to prevent sight. The enemy has not only pulled the blindfold over the spiritual eyes of the church but deceived her into thinking she can still see. Jesus Christ was sent to heal the brokenhearted, preach deliverance to the captives, and recover sight to the blind. May we, the church of the living God, remove the blindfold and once again charge forth with the gospel to a lost and dying world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is faith and how does it differ from belief? How do people disagree, and why do people disagree? In particular, how does one make decisions about faith? Does reason enter into the discussion at all? Elgin Hushbeck, Jr., author of two previous books in the Consider Christianity series, Evidence for the Bible and Christianity and Secularism, is very much concerned with these questions. After all, how can you conclude that the Bible is reliable or that Christianity is valid without discussing how it is that these questions are to be answered. In Faith and Reason, Hushbeck continues what is both a long-term study and a journey of faith. This combination is particularly powerful, because he is discussing issues which have concerned him and others, and is speaking of something he has experienced. He is extraordinarily well-qualified to examine these issues in detail. Unlike the first two volumes in the series, this book is directed more at a Christian audience. It calls for Christians to consider the “why” of their faith and to prepare to both consider and express. Amongst the many important topics covered are the definitions of “faith” and “reason,” the nature of evidence, critical thinking, logical fallacies, how critical thinking impacts Bible study, and finally what constitutes a living faith. This book will be a powerful tool for Christians who want to think more clearly about their faith, but can be valuable for anyone interested in epistemology, especially in comparative religion.

Ahmose Presents Tales You Never Saw Coming. Add this element to the keen observations taken from life in the inner city of Baltimore, and a plethora of knowledge gained from university classes, and the result is an imaginative, quirky collection of stories that elicit deep thought and expansive thinking. R.M. Ahmose Presents Tales You Never Saw Coming is a collection of three stories, each of which is meant to delight with its imaginativeness, quirkiness, and sometimes eyebrow-raising social commentary. While robots are the stated central characters in the lead story "Better Design," this tale actually highlights features of human society. "Saved" blends religion, devoutness, doubt, agnosticism, and ill fortune. The final story, "Psychotherapy and Desserts," presents a tale of intrigue based on an experience at a community mental health center. A suspenseful collection of stories, R.M. Ahmose Presents Tales You Never Saw Coming pays heed to the idea that nothing is as it seems.

Do you know what beliefs are the most powerful and beneficial to have? The Final Religion teaches about beliefs that will improve the present and the future of mankind-and that includes you. As you turn the pages, you'll embark on a journey into your own mind, into your personal philosophies and beliefs. This journey will leave you with a better understanding of self, others, and the world; and it will set you free to create happiness in your life. Religions throughout the world have served a common purpose: they provide a set of beliefs we use to live our lives. Religious organizations have given directions on how to interact with others, to understand our environment, and to cope with the unknown. Religions were the first to attempt to answer difficult questions, such as: "Is there a God ?" "What should I believe?" "How should I live my life?" The Final Religion explores the historical influence of religion and religious -organizations-with specific examples from some of our most commonly held beliefs and celebrations-and then it helps us to think for ourselves, to follow the dictates of our own conscience, and to shape our beliefs with the help of three universal elements: truth, justice, and love. The Final Religion enables: us to answer the difficult questions and to shape our own future. Book jacket.

Book excerpt: In Dimensions of Faith, cognitive scientist Steve Donaldson takes readers on a journey from the world of assumptions, set minds, widely varying beliefs, and popular misconceptions to an understanding of the true essence and role of faith as the natural and inevitable product of brains. Using numerous illustrations and examples, Donaldson shows how faith is necessitated by a variety of unavoidable limitations, exposes the myth of a divide between faith and critical thinking, provides practical advice for crafting coherent beliefs, and explains why there can never be such a place as Factland. Along the way he takes a special look at religious faith - evaluating its attributes, exploring its relation to other manifestations of faith, investigating whether God has done his job well enough to warrant the faith placed in him, and pondering how truth seekers can sometimes end up in very different places.

Book excerpt: Faith, since the earliest Christian theologians, has been regarded as the fundamental Christian virtue--the prerequisite for hope, charity, and good works. In this book, Avery Dulles examines the biblical foundations and history of theological reflection on faith, from the Greek and Latin fathers to such modern giants as Tillich, Rahner, and Lonergan. Further, Dulles presents his own systematic synthesis, reflecting on such topics as the nature and object of faith; the certitude of faith; the birth, growth, and loss of faith; and faith and salvation. The result is a refreshingly relevant theology of faith for our day.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The apocalyptic end times have finally arrived. What is coming to an end, though, is not what you have been led to believe. Do you desire the truth about God, our foremost religions, the purpose of life and the future of our planet? Are you ready to challenge the religious powers that be to learn what most would rather not know? If so, this revolutionary book will help you transcend the darkness on your eternal journey home to a God of pure, unconditional love (a God who has no cause or need to ever judge or condemn anybody). Illuminating the Narrow Gate reveals the flaws of the mainstream Western religions as it guides and empowers its readers to embrace an enlightened spirituality. Brimming with astonishing insights and revelations, it will shock the world by debunking the “fire and brimstone” theology of mainstream Christianity. It primarily accomplishes this by unraveling the apocalyptic prophecies of Daniel, the gospels and Revelation in their entirety. In fact, they contain hidden spiritual messages that contradict what has been confidently preached for all these centuries. Like a challenging riddle that cannot be solved, the answer is obvious in hindsight. Only the blinding power of a paradigm can explain how we missed it for so long. The revelations will strike with devastating force because the book first arrives at the same conclusion through more traditional means. It convincingly describes how Jesus had come to uproot Judaism, but the version of Christianity that developed in his wake failed to make the paradigm shift. Erroneous tenets that should have been discarded were instead institutionalized in both theology and authority. The book also blazes a third independent trail to the same destination by showing how this ancient religious tree bore its poisonous fruit in both the Holocaust and the abomination of slavery that fathered the Civil War. Furthermore, the book illuminates the nature of evil and its well-cloaked ways, which is essential for unraveling the prophecies. This wisdom yields a new and astonishing interpretation of the Book of Job that delivers a quantum leap in insight over the prevailing understanding. As the first devout Christian to read this interpretation commented, “It rocked my apple cart to the core.” In addition, it presents an array of scientific evidence for the spiritual realm’s existence that complements its amazing demonstration that long-range prophecy is truly possible. It thus shows the atheistic religion of scientism is also doomed. Meanwhile, the book proves Jesus was the “Anointed One” (Messiah) with a telescoping trio of prophecies (from Daniel) that foretold the onset of his ministry to the reign of the Roman Empire, to its first ten emperors in the 1st century CE and to 27–34 CE. Most Christians will thus either fearfully denounce the book as a satanic assault upon their religion or courageously embrace it as the inevitable completion of the Reformation. The great spiritual awakening will soon be kicking into high gear, which is exactly what the apocalyptic prophecies long ago foretold and the spiritual realm has long been awaiting. As Jesus and a group of angels informed an atheist during his near-death experience in 1985, “The world is at the beginning of a major transformation. It will be a spiritual revolution that will affect every person in the world.” Can you handle the truth? Are you ready to awaken? If so, this world-changing book is at your service. * You only have to purchase Vol. I to get the book’s core insights and revelations. A PDF document of the Endnotes, Bibliography, Index, et al. (published in Vol. II) can be downloaded for free from the book’s website to make Vol. I a self-standing book.

Book excerpt: An award-winning journalist’s extraordinary account of being kidnapped and tortured in Syria by al Qaeda for two years—a revelatory memoir about war, human nature, and endurance that’s “the best of the genre, profound, poetic, and sorrowful” (The Atlantic). In 2012, American journalist Theo Padnos, fluent in Arabic, Russian, German, and French, traveled to a Turkish border town to write and report on the Syrian civil war. One afternoon in October, while walking through an olive grove, he met three young Syrians—who turned out to be al Qaeda operatives—and they captured him and kept him prisoner for nearly two years. On his first day, in the first of many prisons, Padnos was given a blindfold—a grime-stained scrap of fabric—that was his only possession throughout his horrific ordeal. Now, Padnos recounts his time in captivity in Syria, where he was frequently tortured at the hands of the al Qaeda affiliate, Jebhat al Nusra. We learn not only about Padnos’s harrowing experience, but we also get a firsthand account of life in a Syrian village, the nature of Islamic prisons, how captors interrogate someone suspected of being CIA, the ways that Islamic fighters shift identities and drift back and forth through the veil of Western civilization, and much more. No other journalist has lived among terrorists for as long as Theo has—and survived. As a resident of thirteen separate prisons in every part of rebel-occupied Syria, Theo witnessed a society adrift amid a steady stream of bombings, executions, torture, prayer, fasting, and exhibitions, all staged by the terrorists. Living within this tide of violence changed not only his personal identity but also profoundly altered his understanding of how to live. Offering fascinating, unprecedented insight into the state of Syria today, Blindfold is “a triumph of the human spirit” (The New York Times Book Review)—combining the emotional power of a captive’s memoir with a journalist’s account of a culture and a nation in conflict that is as urgent and important as ever.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of human knowledge and the consequences of error are constantly stressed within Scripture, which emphasizes the knowledge of good and evil: knowing that YHWH IS your God; knowing that Jesus is the Christ; and the goal of developing Israel into a 'wise and discerning people'. We, too, long for confidence in our understanding - the assurance that our most basic knowledge is not ultimately incorrect. Biblical Knowing assesses what Israel knew, but more importantly, how she was meant to know - introducing a comprehensive scriptural epistemology, firmly rooted in the Scripture's own presentation of important epistemological events in the story of Israel. Because modern philosophy has also made authoritative claims about knowledge, Biblical Knowing engages contemporary academic views of knowledge (e.g., Reformed Epistemology, scientific epistemology, Virtue Epistemology, etc) and recent philosophical method (e.g., Analytic Theology), assessing them for points of congruence ordeparture from Scripture's own epistemology. Additionally, Biblical Knowing explores what proper knowing looks like in the task of theology itself, in the teaching and preaching of the church, and in the context of counseling.

Book excerpt: Formerly a site of study reserved for intellectual historians and political philosophers, scholarship on religious toleration, from the perspective of literary scholars, is fairly limited. Largely ignored and understudied techniques employed by writers to influence cultural understandings of tolerance are rich for exploration. In investigating texts ranging from early modern to Romantic, Alison Conway, David Alvarez, and their contributors shed light on what literature can say about toleration, and how it can produce and manage feelings of tolerance and intolerance. Beginning with an overview of the historical debates surrounding the terms "toleration" and "tolerance," this book moves on to discuss the specific contributions that literature and literary modes have made to cultural history, studying the literary techniques that philosophers, theologians, and political theorists used to frame the questions central to the idea and practice of religious toleration. Tracing the rhetoric employed by a wide range of authors, the contributors delve into topics such as conversion as an instrument of power in Shakespeare; the relationship between religious toleration and the rise of Enlightenment satire; and the ways in which writing can act as a call for tolerance.

Those who sit in the pews, are you truly expecting and receiving genuine Gospel preaching? In The Foolishness of Preaching Robert Farrar Capon challenges preachers to preach faithfully and effectively to their congregations and challenges congregants to expect and demand genuine preaching. "A passion for the Passion" is the necessary ingredient for authentic preaching, declares Capon. A preacher must believe passionately in the Good News of salvation in Christ. Preachers often experience stumbling blocks preventing them from authentic preaching. In Part One, "The Bedrock of Preaching," Capon discusses these stumbling blocks and ways to overcome them. In Part Two, "The Practice of Preaching," Capon offers practical advice and insight into the mechanics of effective preaching. The Foolishness of Preaching is not simply a nuts-and-bolts exercise in preaching, but a lively and challenging lesson that never loses touch with the center of preaching and belief-the astonishing grace of Jesus Christ.
