Book excerpt: In 1942, when news of the Nazi genocide reached the West, the leaders of the anti-Hitler coalition pledged to punish all those responsible for war crimes. Their resoluteness was confirmed by the Moscow declaration of December 1942 and a number of other pronouncements. Despite this decision, the compilation of a list of Nazi criminals, and the arrests of some leading personalities after the war, neither the U.S. nor Britain succeeded in punishing those guilty of the Holocaust and carrying out the denazification of Germany. Although the Nuremberg Trials, and some lesser ones, were conducted in the British and American occupation zones, many criminals not only went unpunished but were even reinstated in decision-making positions in West Germany, and many others were allowed into Britain and the U.S. Guided by political and economic considerations rather than by justice, Britain, the USA, and other Western nations renounced their pledge and granted shelter to Nazi criminals and their accomplices. Britain and other countries began to revise their policy toward former Nazi criminals only in the late 1980s-90s.

Book excerpt: A medical thriller from Pulitzer Prize–winning author James B. Stewart about serial killer doctor Michael Swango and the medical community that chose to turn a blind eye on his criminal activities. No one could believe that the handsome young doctor might be a serial killer. Wherever he was hired—in Ohio, Illinois, New York, South Dakota—Michael Swango at first seemed the model physician. Then his patients began dying under suspicious circumstances. At once a gripping read and a hard-hitting look at the inner workings of the American medical system, Blind Eye describes a professional hierarchy where doctors repeatedly accept the word of fellow physicians over that of nurses, hospital employees, and patients—even as horrible truths begin to emerge. With the prodigious investigative reporting that has defined his Pulitzer Prize–winning career, James B. Stewart has tracked down survivors, relatives of victims, and shaken coworkers to unearth the evidence that may finally lead to Swango’s conviction. Combining meticulous research with spellbinding prose, Stewart has written a shocking chronicle of a psychopathic doctor and of the medical establishment that chose to turn a blind eye on his criminal activities.

Book excerpt: This text provides an account of the allied treatment of Nazi war criminals and the failure to denazify Germany. Despite the growing avalanche of evidence after 1939 about Nazi Germany's deliberate extermination policies, the British Foreign Office refused to implement Churchill's orders to organize an effective post-war programme to hunt down and prosecute the perpetrators. That disinterest was matched by the State Department in Washington. Both governments even seemed disintereseted when their own POW's were victims. In the early 1960s, the truth was discovered, that of approximately 150,000 known mass murderers, only about 30,000 had been prosecuted - the vast majority in Eastern Europe. The three western allies were to blame. They had deliberately turned a blind eye to murder.

Book excerpt: Beneath the rotting floorboards of an abandoned shed are human bones -- lots of them -- the last things a runaway rogue true-crime writer and his photojournalist ex-lover expected to find when they took shelter from a vicious Wisconsin blizzard. The grisly nightmare Frank Corso and Meg Dougherty have uncovered is nothing they can turn a blind eye to. The hideous slaughter of a family, undetected for fifteen years, must be avenged, as the hunt for a killer carries Corso halfway across the country, and through a chilling history of violence, terror, and bloodshed. But becoming an instrument of justice has made him a target of a rage-driven maniac -- and it's leading to ashocking truth hidden in an isolated place where death lives ... and where no law protects the innocent.

Book excerpt: From the moment he began medical school, people thought Swango was peculiar. He seemed woefully incompetent in classwork, showed no empathy for patients, and was obsessed with violent death. When he interned at Ohio State, patients started dying mysteriously. Then, Swango was jailed for poisoning several co-workers. Incredibly, after his release from prison, he secured hospital positions in South Dakota and New York - and the body count continued to rise. Although suspected by the FBI of possibly 60 murders, Swango has never been convicted of anything worse than fraud. Stewart's remarkable reporting is a horrifying, yet fascinating and incredibly important look at flaws in the medical profession that possibly allowed dozens of murders to go unpunished.

Book excerpt: "What does a boy do when things go bad at home? Who does he tell when things grow worse? Leeland didn't tell anyone--or did he? BLIND EYE tells the story of Leeland's life on a remote ranch in New Mexico. No one paid attention to what he couldn't say. Would you have listened?" - Candace Simar, Spur Award-winning author of The Abercrombie Trail Series --- At the Bounty Canyon Ranch in Southeastern New Mexico, the bodies of Luke and Deona Pruitt are buried in a manure pit and their 14-year-old son Leeland Pruitt is missing. Deputy Sheriff Greenwood is called out to investigate the missing Pruitt family and discovers the grim scene. Leeland's brutal upbringing was an open secret overlooked by neighbors and teachers for years. The community turned a blind eye as Leeland was moved by his cruel father from one remote ranch to another. And so, Deputy Greenwood begins a twenty-four-hour hunt to find and save the boy suspected of murdering his parents. Blind Eye is both a tragedy and a dilemma of moral conscience. In this tale of cultural complicity, the community, at best, looked the other way and, at worst, enabled abuse, leaving us all to ask, 'What is too much to ask of a boy?'
