Book excerpt: Return for a fifth time with Pastor Blackstone to the fabled land of India and discover more biblical precepts and life-changing concepts as he travels again with his good friend Shibu Simon to “earth’s farthest bounds.” This time the Maine pastor will speak at three Indian graduations in three days in two different Indian states, witness a baptism in a cattle trough, get up close and personal with a temple elephant that had just blessed a house, and travel through eight Indian states in ten days while journeying the length and breadth of India in a four-thousand-mile odyssey. That odyssey will include visiting the Taj Mahal by water, the Red Fort of Agra, the Golden Temple of the Sikhs, a hostel in Delhi, and the guru caves of Udayagiri. Experience your first cycle rickshaw ride in Amritsar, your first rural hospital in Uttar Pradesh, your fifth Indian train ride through Haryana, and a surprising side-trip to Orissa. These encounters and experiences will cause you to think what is possible if you step out of your comfort zone and journey to “earth’s farthest bounds” on business for the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords—Jesus Christ!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Low Countries are famous for their radically changing landscape over the last 1,000 years. Like the landscape, the linguistic situation has also undergone major changes. In Holland, an early form of Frisian was spoken until, very roughly, 1100, and in parts of North Holland it disappeared even later. The hunt for traces of Frisian or Ingvaeonic in the dialects of the western Low Countries has been going on for around 150 years, but a synthesis of the available evidence has never appeared. The main aim of this book is to fill that gap. It follows the lead of many recent studies on the nature and effects of language contact situations in the past. The topic is approached from two different angles: Dutch dialectology, in all its geographic and diachronic variation, and comparative Germanic linguistics. In the end, the minute details and the bigger picture merge into one possible account of the early and high medieval processes that determined the make-up of western Dutch.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'I have at last reached the desired haven', exclaimed Belfast-born Bessie Macready in 1878, the year of her arrival at Lyttelton, when writing home to cousins in County Down. Utilizing fascinating personal correspondence exchanged between Ireland and New Zealand, this book explores individual responses to migration during the period of the great European emigrations across the world. It addresses a number of central questions in migration history such as the circumstances of departure. Equally why did some connections choose to stay? And how did migrant letter writers depict their voyage out, the environment, work, family and neighbours, politics, and faith? How prevalent was return and repeat migration? In answering these questions the book gives significant attention to the social networks constraining and enabling migrants. The book represents an innovative and original contribution to the history of European migration between the mid-nineteenth century and the interwar years. It addresses broader debates in the history of European migration relating to the use of personal testimony to chart the experiences of emigrants and the uncertain processes of adaptation, incorporation, and adjustment that migrants underwent in new and sometimes unfamiliar environments. The book also adds to the ever-increasing historiography of the Irish abroad.

Book excerpt: The riveting biography of Burl Osborne, former chairman of The Associated Press and publisher of The Dallas Morning News, who waged and won one of the last great newspaper wars in the U.S. Burl is the story of one man’s unlikely rise from the coal mines of Appalachia to the pinnacle of journalism. After being diagnosed with a fatal kidney disease as a child, Burl Osborne pioneered home dialysis treatment and became the 130th person to undergo a live kidney transplant in 1966—then an unproven, high-risk operation. While managing his challenging illness, Burl distinguished himself early as a writer and reporter with The Associated Press, eventually rising to the top of the wire service’s executive ranks. Then, against the advice of his colleagues and the newspaper’s own doctors, he sought an even greater challenge: joining The Dallas Morning News to lead the fight in one of America’s last great newspaper wars. Throughout his life and career, he garnered respect from business and political leaders, reporters, editors, and publishers around the country. Burl thrusts readers into the improbable and remarkable life of a man at the forefront of both medicine and the golden age of journalism.

From its beginning in 1869 as a land-grant institution on the edge of the prairie, the University of Nebraska–Lincoln has expanded the frontiers of opportunity for nearly three hundred thousand graduates. This lavishly illustrated volume celebrates Nebraska’s first 150 years with a look back at the alumni, faculty, and staff whose work has made an enduring impact on the world, from Willa Cather’s Pulitzer Prize–winning literature to James Van Etten’s groundbreaking research in virology. This book also highlights the iconic buildings and landmarks on campus and the activities and experiences of students, from the East Campus Dairy Store and the Daily Nebraskan to a celebration of the Big Red sensation of Husker athletics, recognizing outstanding coaches and student-athlete achievements. Dear Old Nebraska U highlights creative inventions and groundbreaking research, from Charles Bessey’s botany classes to the Jeffrey S. Raikes School of Computer Science and Management. The University will continue to have a profound influence on the state of Nebraska and the rest of the global community for generations to come. For instance, initiatives such as Nebraska Innovation Campus—a site dedicated to ambitious research and technology ventures, including the Nebraska Food for Health Center and the Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute—are working to improve the health and well-being of people worldwide. The Center for Plant Science Innovation similarly provides research leadership in the use of biomass as an energy resource, and the National Strategic Research Institute partners with U.S. Strategic Command to strengthen our national security. The University’s official motto is “Literis Dedicata et Omnibus Artibus” (Dedicated to Letters and All the Arts). Nebraska has fulfilled that aspirational motto and will continue to be a place of pride for Huskers everywhere. There is no place like our dear old Nebraska U.
