Book excerpt: "Large surface coal mines in Wyoming's Powder River Basin ship millions of tons of coal per annum, moving millions of cubic yards of overburden to mine the coal. Much of this volume is blasted in the form of benches, a common mining technique. Increases in production and scale of equipment in the past thirty-five years have created a paradigm shift for drill and blast personnel at these large surface mines, and the explosives industry has yet to create a blast design method specifically tailored for large surface coal mine bench blasting. This research examines the typical scale of bench blasting at large surface coal mines, develops a new method of design tailored for these operations, and tests the new method against two widely accepted traditional blast design methods. Novel contributions of the research include a new universal scale of energy distribution known as Available Energy, and an entirely powder factor based blast design method that uses cut width as part of the design process. Numerical comparison testing is done at both small borehole diameters (corresponding to the original domain of the traditional blast design methods) and at large borehole diameters. A comparison of the new method and existing major methods of traditional blast design is monitored graphically, and linear regression is used to track the improvement of the accuracy of the match. Finally, the new design method is presented in nomograph form to facilitate use in the field. Development of the nomograph is discussed and sample nomographs for specific design conditions are included. Recommendations for future work and broader applications of the Available Energy paradigm are given to conclude the dissertation."--Abstract, page iii.

Book excerpt: A major part of mineral production comes from surface mining and there has been a rapid growth in this sector with the deployment of high capacity equipment .Increased production can be achieved from large capacity surface mines using heavy earth moving machineries. These machineries involve high capital cost, and thus, the mining engineers should plan to achieve the best performance from these machineries. Performance of them, especially the excavating and transporting equipments are largely depending on the blast results, particularly, fragment size, distribution and muck profile. Thus, proper blast design with a computational approach is a vital factor that affects the cost of the entire mining activities.

It includes information and procedures developed by Bureau research, explosives manufacturers, and the mining industry. It is intended for use as a guide in developing training programs and also to provide experienced blasters an update on the latest state of technology in the broad field of explosives and blasting. Types of explosives and blasting agents and their key explosive and physical properties are discussed. Explosives selection criteria are described. The features of the traditional initiation systems - electrical, detonating cord, and cap and fuse - are pointed out, and the newer nonelectric initiation systems are discussed. Various blasthole priming techniques are described. Blasthole loading of various explosive types is covered. Blast design, including geologic considerations, for both surface and underground blasting is detailed. Environmental effects of blasting such as flyrock and air and ground vibrations are discussed along with techniques of measuring and alleviating these undesirable side effects. Blasting safety procedures are detailed in the chronological order of the blasting process. The various Federal blasting regulations are enumerated along with their Code of Federal Regulations citations. An extensive glossary of blasting related terms is included along with references to articles providing more detailed information on the aforementioned items. Emphasis in the report has been placed on practical considerations.

Book excerpt: An ever-growing demand for coal and non-coal minerals has necessitated the adoption of mega-blast in conjunction with high capacity excavating equipment. Therefore blast design and its optimization have attracted special attention in the mining industry under the current scenario of tight fiscal constraints. Various researchers suggested unequivocally that the overall mining cost is largely influenced by blasting performance and the entire mining cycle may be jeopardised due to improper blast design. Blasting performance of an explosive is dependent on its detonic properties, the rock mass response to dynamic explosive loading and the confinement provided by the blast design. A new blast design approach has been developed in this book to design the blast using high speed video camera. This new design approach will be helpful in designing the complex blasts in mines.
