Book excerpt: This highly sympathetic and deeply personal account of Malawi's experience of colonialism has particular poignancy as it is written from the marginal perspective of a mixed-race child in a race-conscious society. The author also has a keen eye for the Scottish dimension in Malawi's story. Historically revealing, politically provocative, and humanly intriguing, this book will be a rewarding read for anyone seeking a better understanding of the people who made Malawi the country it is today.

Book Synopsis Mission in Malawi: Essays in Honour of Klaus Fiedler by : S. Nkhoma
Download or read book Mission in Malawi: Essays in Honour of Klaus Fiedler written by S. Nkhoma and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2021-10-29 with total page 602 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first four essays in Mission in Malawi reassess the meaning, nature and place of mission in a postmodern world. Subsequent essays examine various issues that missionaries and the Church in Malawi have and continue to struggle with. These range from the problem of administering church discipline, the challenge of Bible translation, the question of how to deal with corruption in the corridors of power to the challenges of dealing with initiation rites, HIV/AIDS, patriarchy, gender inequality, the exercise of the Church's prophetic role, lack of contextualized theology, and the difficult task of creating an inclusive church and society. The last three essays are an attempt to describe a contextual theology appropriate for the African church, construct a theology for Malawi and project a future for mission in Malawi in the context of a changing world. These essays offer a rare window into the life and struggles of the Malawian Church even as it faces the postmodern future. The essays are not only informative but also challenging and thought-provoking. Scholars, students and other readers who share an interest in mission and the life of the Church in Malawi will find this collection of essays indispensable in the many years to come.

Book excerpt: Possibly the most outstanding Malawian church leader of the 1960s and 1970s was the Very Reverend Jonathan Sangaya, General Secretary of the Church of Central Africa Presbyterian (CCAP) Synod of Blantyre. To him fell the task of guiding his church into the post-missionary era and his dynamic leadership was a major factor in the success with which that transition was completed. This vivid biography offers many insights into the history of the church and society during his lifetime. It is a welcome addition to the literature covering the transition from mission to church in African Christianity, and will enable many readers to become acquainted with a great Malawian of a former generation.

Book Synopsis Political Culture and Nationalism in Malawi by : Joey Power
Download or read book Political Culture and Nationalism in Malawi written by Joey Power and published by University Rochester Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inspired by the events leading up to the overthrow of Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda's Life Presidency, this book explores the deep logic of Malawi's political culture as it emerged in the colonial and early post-colonial periods. It draws on archival sources from three continents and oral testimonies gathered over a ten-year period provided by those who lived these events. Power narrates how anti-colonial protest was made relevant to the African majority through the painstaking engagement of politicians in local grievances and struggles, which they then linked to the fight against white settler domination in the guise of the Central African Federation. She also explores how Dr. Banda (leader of independent Malawi for thirty years), the Nyasaland African Congress, and its successor, the Malawi Congress Party, functioned within this political culture, and how the MCP became a formidable political machine. Central to this process was the deployment of women and youth to cut across parochial politics and consolidate a broad base of support. No less important was the deliberate manipulation of history and the use of rumor and innuendo, symbol and pageantry, persecution and reward. It was this mix that made people both accept and reject the MCP regime, sometimes simultaneously. Joey Power is Professor of History at Ryerson University, Toronto, Ontario.
Book Synopsis Towards Defragmenting the Management System of Lake Chilwa Basin, Malawi by : Peter Mvula
Download or read book Towards Defragmenting the Management System of Lake Chilwa Basin, Malawi written by Peter Mvula and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2014 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents results of the Defragmenting African Resource Management (DARMA) Project covering the Lake Chilwa basin in Malawi. The central theme is that, in order to ensure resource base sustainability, research and management within the basin should adopt an ecosystems approach. Presently, research and management of the basin is sector-based, hence resource user conflicts are increasing. User demand for various resources is increasing rapidly, mainly due to population increase and lack of alternative economic activities, thereby presenting challenges to sustainable resource management. Specific areas of sectoral interconnections are highlighted and defragmentation options suggested. (Series: Defragmenting African Resource Management [DARMA] - Vol. 1)
