Book excerpt: Early in the 21st Century, the Tyrell Corporation advanced Robot evolution into the Nexus phase – a being virtually identical to a human – known as a Replicant. Replicants were used Off-world as slave labor. Those who escaped to Earth were hunted by Blade Runner Units, ordered to kill any trespassing Replicant upon detection. In 2022, a Replicant attack on the Tyrell Corporation forced the company into bankruptcy and erased all records of existing Replicants. The surviving Nexus 8 models disappeared with the help of the Replicant Underground. Many Replicants remained in servitude, In 2027, Aahna “Ash” Ashina, rejoined the Blade Runner department, although her superiors are unaware that her lover, Freysa, is a leader in the Replicant Underground. The Replicant rebellion instigated by Yotun, a Nexus 6 Replicant who somehow lived beyond his four-year lifespan, has failed. The rejuvenating elixir that Yotun used to enhance his followers has failed too, resulting in their mass deaths. Now Yotun himself has started to succumb to the ravages of time, and even the regular blood transfusions from his loyal supporters no longer work. Convinced that an old diary of Eldon Tyrell holds the key to his survival, Yotun has set off to Eldon’s birthplace in search of a mysterious box that he believes holds the secret to extending his life. Meanwhile, Ash has been outed as a double-agent working for the Replicant Underground by Blade Runner Marlowe and arrested by the LAPD.

Book excerpt: Having successfully helped Cleo and her surrogate Replicant mother Isobel escape Off-world, Blade Runner Aahna Ashina, ‘Ash’, has returned to Los Angeles to hunt down business tycoon, Alexander Selwyn. While investigating a possible lead, Ash was apprehended by the LAPD, but before she could be taken into custody she was freed by members of the Replicant Resistances who spirited her away to a remote farmhouse where she met their leader, Freysa. While Freysa repaired Ash’s damaged backbrace, the farmhouse was attacked by Selwyn’s own personal Blade Runner, Hythe, who had tracked Ash to the farmhouse following a tipoff. A gun battle broke out, giving Freysa and Ash time to escape back to the city. There, Freysa revealed that the Replicant Resistance had tracked down Selwyn’s location. With her backbrace fully repaired, Ash set off back to Selwyn’s Santa Barbara mansion, to find him waiting for her with a squad of Hythe Replicants…

Using data retrieved from Isobel’s abandoned Spinner, Ash followed Isobel’s trail and found herself confronting a replicant who had genetically ‘aged himself up’ as an old man to avoid detection. Ash shot and wounded him after he attacked her, but he was still able to escape, telling Ash, as he fled, to: “Ask Alexander Selwyn why he wants his daughter dead.” Meanwhile, Isobel and Cleo have made contact with an underworld community that lives beneath the streets of Los Angeles and its leader, Malik, who also runs an underground railway that helps Replicants to escape. After Ash reported back to Selwyn on the progress of her investigation, her own Spinner was attacked in mid-air by another craft, which sent her crashing and burning towards the streets of the city below…

Superior in strength and agility, the Replicants functioned primarily as Off-world slave labor or in hazardous, high-collateral combat situations. After Replicants were declared illegal on Earth, special police operatives – called Blade Runners – had orders to kill or ‘retire’ any trespassers upon detection. Twenty years ago, Detective Aahna Ashina of the Los Angeles Police Department was one of the first to qualify for the assignment. Her colleagues called her Ash. She was the best of them. Today, her saga will end.

Book excerpt: Widely acclaimed upon its release as a future classic, Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049 is visually stunning, philosophically profound, and a provocative extension of the story in Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner. Containing specially commissioned chapters by a roster of international contributors, this fascinating collection explores philosophical questions that abound in Blade Runner 2049, including: What distinguishes the authentically "human" person? How might natality condition one’s experience of being-in-the-world? How might shared memories feature in the constitution of personal identities? What happens when created beings transcend the limits intended in their design? What (if anything) is it like to be a hologram? Can artificial beings participate in genuinely romantic relationships? How might developing artificial economics impact our behaviour as prosumers? What are the implications of techno-human enhancement in an era of surveillance capitalism? Including a foreword by Denis Villeneuve, Blade Runner 2049: A Philosophical Exploration is essential reading for anyone interested in philosophy, film studies, philosophy of mind, psychology, gender studies, and conceptual issues in cognitive science and artificial intelligence.

Book excerpt: Transmedia Directors focuses on artist-practitioners who work across media, platforms and disciplines, including film, television, music video, commercials and the internet. Working in the age of media convergence, today's em/impresarios project a distinctive style that points toward a new contemporary aesthetics. The media they engage with enrich their practices – through film and television (with its potential for world-building and sense of the past and future), music video (with its audiovisual aesthetics and rhythm), commercials (with their ability to project a message quickly) and the internet (with its refreshed concepts of audience and participation), to larger forms like restaurants and amusement parks (with their materiality alongside today's digital aesthetics). These directors encourage us to reassess concepts of authorship, assemblage, transmedia, audiovisual aesthetics and world-building. Providing a vital resource for scholars and practitioners, this collection weaves together insights about artist-practitioners' collaborative processes as well as strategies for composition, representation, subversion and resistance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Routledge Companion to Gender and Science Fiction is the first large-scale reference work of its kind, critically assessing the relations of gender and genre in science fiction (SF) especially—but not exclusively—as explored in speculative art by women and LGBTQ+ artists across the world. This global volume builds upon the traditions of interdisciplinary inquiry by connecting established topics in gender studies and science fiction studies with emergent ideas from researchers in different media. Taken together, they challenge conventional generic boundaries; provide new ways of approaching familiar texts; recover lost artists and introduce new ones; connect the revival of old, hate-based politics with the increasing visibility of imagined futures for all; and show how SF stories about new kinds of gender relations inspire new models of artistic, technoscientific, and political practice. Their chapters are grouped into five conversations—about the history of gender and genre, theoretical frameworks, subjectivities, medias and transmedialities, and transtemporalities—that are central to discussions of gender and SF in the current moment. A range of both emerging and established names in media, literature, and cultural studies engage with a huge diversity of topics including eco-criticism, animal studies, cyborg and posthumanist theory, masculinity, critical race studies, Indigenous futurisms, Black girlhood, and gaming. This is an essential resource for students and scholars studying gender, sexuality, and/or science fiction.
