Book excerpt: Excerpt from Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine, 1827, Vol. 21 There is no subject which at the present moment occupies so much of the public attention as the new sys tem of Free Trade, and none certain ly can be more deserving of it. 'the legislature has the power, by altera tions in the laws which regulate trade, to alter - let it be remembered, for the better or the worse, as the alterations are, or are not, judicious-not only the situation of the country in general, but the relative situation of every in dividual in it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Blackwood's Magazine, Vol. 194: July-December, 1913 No light was in the glen except from the house he quitted, where some windows, looked back on from a little distance when he reached the garden foot, appeared as yellow squares stuck high up on the arch of night. One of them he knew to be the window of Drimdorran's closet, none of them was Margaret's. He felt that the best thing he could do would be to walk into the town and wait for an explana tion of the truancy until the morrow's morning, but at three-and-twenty years of age it is always something else than the best in policy that commands our acts, and feneas, with one hand feel ing at his chin and the other at times thrust out before him till he had come to his second eyes, passed through the fringe of shrubbery about the garden limits, and out across the fields to the river-side. By the time he reached it he had got a little of the howlet's vision, and the dovecote and its scraggy thicket were to be perceived as bodies massive, blacker than the night. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Blackwood's Magazine, Vol. 193: January-June 1913 There was general merriment at this, for Mr Carmyle was patriarchal, both in appearance and habits. But it did nothing to soothe the nerves of The Freak himself, who happened at the moment to be standing shyly upon one leg outside the door, endeavouring to summon up sufficient courage to walk in. He was a small sandy-haired boy with shrewd blue eyes and a most disarming smile, and he belonged to a not uncommon and distinctly unlucky class. There are boys who are shy and who look shy. Such are usually left to themselves, and gradually attain to confidence. There are boys who are bumpti ous and behave bumptiously. Such are usually put through a brief disciplinary course by their friends, and ultimately achieve respectability. And there are boys who are shy, but who, through sheer self consciousness and a desire to conceal their shyness, behave bumptiously. The way of such is hard. Public school discip linary methods do not discrim inate between the sheep and the goats. Variations from the normal, whether voluntary or involuntary, are all corrected by the same methods. Un conventionality of every kind is rebuked by stern moralists who have been through the mill themselves, and are con vinced that it would be ungenerous to deprive the succeeding generation of the benefits which have produced such brilliant results in their own case. Book excerpt: An ambitious new history of philosophy in English that broadens the canon to include many lesser-known figures Ludwig Wittgenstein once wrote that “philosophy should be written like poetry.” But philosophy has often been presented more prosaically as a long trudge through canonical authors and great works. But what, Jonathan Rée asks, if we instead saw the history of philosophy as a haphazard series of unmapped forest paths, a mass of individual stories showing endurance, inventiveness, bewilderment, anxiety, impatience, and good humor? Here, Jonathan Rée brilliantly retells this history, covering such figures as Descartes, Locke, Kant, Hegel, Marx, Nietzsche, Mill, James, Frege, Wittgenstein, and Sartre. But he also includes authors not usually associated with philosophy, such as William Hazlitt, George Eliot, Darwin, and W. H. Auden. Above all, he uncovers dozens of unremembered figures—puritans, revolutionaries, pantheists, feminists, nihilists, socialists, and scientists—who were passionate and active readers of philosophy, and often authors themselves. Breaking away from high-altitude narratives, he shows how philosophy finds its way into ordinary lives, enriching and transforming them in unexpected ways.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Samuel Wilderspin became a household name in his own lifetime. Befriended by Dickens, lampooned by Cruikshank, his achievements discussed in Parliament, he was one of the best known educators of the 1830s and 1840s. However, Wilderspin’s consistent opposition to denominational education combined with his liberal and advanced views made him unpopular with the Establishment. Samuel Wilderspin’s fame declined after his retirement in 1847 but his reputation as an infant school educator has survived. Many of his ideas and practices have had a great influence on infant education. In this book, first published in 1982, Wilderspin’s own story is placed in the context of this growing movement led by Owen, Buchanan and Oberlin, and it goes a long way towards reinstating him as one of the prominent figures in the early education movement. This title will be of interest to students of history and education.
