Book excerpt: Second in a two-book saga. Bronwyn McGregor has known the depths of heartache. Having lost the man she'd loved since childhood and the child their great love created, she has thrown herself into her work as a psychologist, determined to help those who cannot help themselves. The last thing on her mind is finding romance among the criminally insane at Baybridge Sanitarium. From a seething cauldron of evil, Viraidan Cree was created in the frigid winds of space. Dredged up from a bog in the wilds of Ireland where he has spent centuries of unlife, he is a Reaper, a warrior among warriors, a being so lethal, so dangerous he cannot be controlled. Yet lurking within the reborn warrior is the spirit of a dead man whose love has survived against all odds. Given the job to secure the safety of those who work at Baybridge, Cree takes one look at Bronwyn and vows to make her his own. But the NightWind Danyon Hart is listening to the Reaper's deep desires. He too has his sights set on Bronwyn and will allow no one to get in his way...especially not a Reaper! Note: We recommend reading BlackWind: Sean and Bronwyn before reading BlackWind: Viraiden and Bronwyn. This story is not for the faint of heart.
Book Synopsis Black Wind, White Snow by : Charles Clover
Download or read book Black Wind, White Snow written by Charles Clover and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2022-07-26 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating study of the root motivations behind the political activities and philosophies of Putin’s government in Russia “Part intellectual history, part portrait gallery . . . Black Wind, White Snow traces the background to Putin’s ideas with verve and clarity.”—Geoffrey Hosking, Financial Times “Required reading. This is a vivid, panoramic history of bad ideas, chasing the metastasis of the doctrine known as Eurasianism. . . . Reading Charles Clover will help you understand the world of lies and delusions that is Eurasia.”—Ben Judah, Standpoint Charles Clover, award-winning journalist and former Moscow bureau chief for the Financial Times, here analyzes the idea of "Eurasianism," a theory of Russian national identity based on ethnicity and geography. Clover traces Eurasianism’s origins in the writings of white Russian exiles in 1920s Europe, through Siberia’s Gulag archipelago in the 1950s, the dissolution of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s, and up to its steady infiltration of the governing elite around Vladimir Putin. This eye-opening analysis pieces together the evidence for Eurasianism’s place at the heart of Kremlin thinking today and explores its impact on recent events, the annexation of Crimea, and the rise in Russia of anti-Western paranoia and imperialist rhetoric, as well as Putin’s sometimes perplexing political actions and ambitions. Based on extensive research and dozens of interviews with Putin’s close advisers, this quietly explosive story will be essential reading for anyone concerned with Russia’s past century, and its future.

Book Synopsis Rising Wind by : Brenda Gayle Plummer
Download or read book Rising Wind written by Brenda Gayle Plummer and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2000-11-09 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: African Americans have a long history of active involvement and interest in international affairs, but their efforts have been largely ignored by scholars of American foreign policy. Gayle Plummer brings a new perspective to the study of twentieth-century American history with her analysis of black Americans' engagement with international issues, from the Italian invasion of Ethiopia in 1935 through the wave of African independence movements of the early 1960s. Plummer first examines how collective definitions of ethnic identity, race, and racism have influenced African American views on foreign affairs. She then probes specific developments in the international arena that galvanized the black community, including the rise of fascism, World War II, the emergence of human rights as a factor in international law, the Cold War, and the American civil rights movement, which had important foreign policy implications. However, she demonstrates that not all African Americans held the same views on particular issues and that a variety of considerations helped shape foreign affairs agendas within the black community just as in American society at large.

Book Synopsis Against Wind and Tide by : Ousmane K. Power-Greene
Download or read book Against Wind and Tide written by Ousmane K. Power-Greene and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2014 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Against Wind and Tide tells the story of African American's battle against the American Colonization Society (ACS), founded in 1816 with the intention to return free blacks to its colony Liberia. Although ACS members considered free black colonization in Africa a benevolent enterprise, most black leaders rejected the ACS, fearing that the organization sought forced removal. As Ousmane K. Power-Greene's story shows, these African American anticolonizationists did not believe Liberia would ever be a true "black American homeland." In this study of anticolonization agitation, Power-Greene draws on newspapers, meeting minutes, and letters to explore the concerted effort on the part of nineteenth century black activists, community leaders, and spokespersons to challenge the American Colonization Society's attempt to make colonization of free blacks federal policy. The ACS insisted the plan embodied empowerment. The United States, they argued, would never accept free blacks as citizens, and the only solution to the status of free blacks was to create an autonomous nation that would fundamentally reject racism at its core. But the activists and reformers on the opposite side believed that the colonization movement was itself deeply racist and in fact one of the greatest obstacles for African Americans to gain citizenship in the United States. Power-Greene synthesizes debates about colonization and emigration, situating this complex and enduring issue into an ever broader conversation about nation building and identity formation in the Atlantic world.

Book Synopsis The Common Wind by : Julius S. Scott
Download or read book The Common Wind written by Julius S. Scott and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2018-11-27 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2019 Stone Book Award, Museum of African American History A remarkable intellectual history of the slave revolts that made the modern revolutionary era The Common Wind is a gripping and colorful account of the intercontinental networks that tied together the free and enslaved masses of the New World. Having delved deep into the gray obscurity of official eighteenth-century records in Spanish, English, and French, Julius S. Scott has written a powerful “history from below.” Scott follows the spread of “rumors of emancipation” and the people behind them, bringing to life the protagonists in the slave revolution.By tracking the colliding worlds of buccaneers, military deserters, and maroon communards from Venezuela to Virginia, Scott records the transmission of contagious mutinies and insurrections in unparalleled detail, providing readers with an intellectual history of the enslaved. Though The Common Wind is credited with having “opened up the Black Atlantic with a rigor and a commitment to the power of written words,” the manuscript remained unpublished for thirty-two years. Now, after receiving wide acclaim from leading historians of slavery and the New World, it has been published by Verso for the first time, with a foreword by the academic and author Marcus Rediker.
