Book excerpt: Research shows African American students are disproportionately suspended and expelled in K-12 institutions throughout the United States due to zero tolerance policies. Additionally, several scholars argue the most restrictive school discipline policies were implemented in the state of Michigan. The purpose of this study is to investigate African American students' and parents' perceptions of school discipline in primarily black high schools to determine the following: a) How do black students and parents perceive school discipline, b) How do black students and parents perceive school safety measures, and c) How do black student and parent perceptions of school discipline differ by social class, gender, and disability status. The results of this study suggest black students and parents perceive school discipline as an impediment to academic achievement, a hindrance to parental employment, a contributor to "black educational flight", and as a precursor to undesired social outcomes (i.e. school dropout, police contact, and substance abuse). The results also suggest the informal social norms that govern interpersonal communication in impoverished African American communities (i.e. the code of the street) may pervade primarily black high schools to become the Code of the School. Moreover, out-of-school suspension and expulsion may function as ineffective deterrents to physical altercations and school violence because under the Code of the School black students may seek physical altercations and school discipline to gain respect and an elevated social status in the academic setting.

This research focused primarily on the attitudes of Black parents and primary guardians toward their involvement in elementary desegregated schools. The study attempted to determine if: (1) Educational background has a significant influence on Black parental and primary guardian attitudes toward involvement in desegregation. (2) Age has a significant influence on Black parental and primary guardian attitudes toward involvement in desegregation. (3) Occupation has a significant influence on Black parental and primary guardian attitudes toward involvement in desegregation. A questionnaire was developed and validated by a panel of judges. The final questionnaire contained twenty-four items, with a five point Likert scale to determine attitudes toward involvement in elementary desegregated schools. Questionnaire items were read aloud in church settings to a random sample of eighty-eight Black parents and primary guardians. A one-way analysis of variance was applied for hypotheses testing. Book excerpt: Improved academic performance, among many other factors, has been linked in the research to parental involvement. Unfortunately, many view African-American parents as uninvolved because of the activities in which they choose to participate. This study is a narratological case study that examines the perceptions of African-American parents in regard to parental involvement. The initial research question was: What are the perceptions of parents regarding their involvement in schools? The three sub-questions that were used to help answer this were: (1) How do parents define involvement? (2) What are their experiences with parental involvement? and (3) How do teachers involve parents with their child’s school? Parental perceptions of parental involvement were analyzed using qualitative measures. The participants of this study were all African-American – four females and one male. This research study involved the study of parents’ perceptions by collecting data sources in the form of face-to-face interviews, written narratives, and a brief focus group. The findings of the research study imply that the definition of parental involvement lacks consideration of various ethnicities. Non-African-American parents might perceive African-American parents as uninvolved or disassociated with the learning of their children, while in reality, the tool by which parents are measured is inadequate. This suggests that school systems should invest time in providing professional development in better understanding how one’s lived experiences can shape one’s own truths and work to understand the perspective of parents of color .
