Book excerpt: Table Talk was the title Pushkin gave, following the example of William Hazlitt or Samuel Taylor Coleridge, to the collection of historical anecdotes jotted down in the years 1830-1836. Pushkin had in his library the T able Talk of both Hazlitt and Coleridge. The question which book prompted his own title has been much discussed. There can be no doubt that Coleridge occupies a very important position in the list of literary sources which Puskhin utilized. It is curious that in the fall of 1830 at Boldino, hence at the period of his greatest literary activity, when he composed a number of his most splendid masterpieces, Puskhin had Coleridge's works with him; not only had his works, but read them anew. Among the Boldino master pieces was also, as we know, the famous "little tragedy" Mozart and Salieri, of which the ultimate psychological-moral peripeteia revolves about Mozart's remark that "genius and crime are two incompati ble things"--"geny i zlodeystvo dve veschi nesovmestnye ..." When I looked through Coleridge's Table Talk I was struck with the following observation, under the date of the 29th of August, 1827: "genius may co-exist with wildness, idleness, folly, even with crime: but not long, believe me, with selfishness, and the indulgence of an envious disposition. Envy is kdkistos kai dikai6tatos the6s, as I once saw expressed some where in a page of Stobaeus: it dwarfs and withers its worshippers.

Book excerpt: Mikhail Osipovich Gershenzon, philosopher, journalist, and scholar, was one of the most original and eccentric Pushkinists of Russia's Silver Age. His eclectic critical judgment was highly esteemed by his generation's best poets and critics, and many of his idiosyncratic interpretations of Pushkin have become canonical. Brian Horowitz's detailed study illuminates both Pushkin's position as a cultural icon of the Silver Age and Gershenzon's role in establishing and challenging that reputation. As Gershenzon's work mirrors both significant and hidden aspects of the Pushkin scholarship of his day, his articulation of Pushkin as the symbolic key to Russian culture reflects the Silver Age nostalgia for and identification with the Golden Age in which Pushkin wrote. This first book-length study of this important figure provides a vivid sense of the inner workings of Russian literary life in the early part of this century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In Pushkin's "Poltava" Virginia M. Burns provides a detailed, literary-structuralist analysis of Aleksandr Pushkin's narrative poem. By examining prior critical approaches to, and interpretations of, her subject, Burns challenges many traditionally accepted views of the poem - such as categorical condemnation of the rebellion of the Ukraine against the Russia of Peter the Great. In turn, and through studies of characterization and narrative and poetic techniques. Burns provides a new interpretation of the "Poltava" in which the poem's meaning may be derived primarily from the unique and unifying organization of its structure." --Book Jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The novelist Ivan Turgenev (1818-1883) is known primarily as a chronicler of his age and crafter of elegant prose--like the simplest painting of daily artifacts, his works have pleased partly because they shape a recognizable world and partly because their form gives to the content its resonant signifying power. Here Jane Costlow accounts for both the historicity and aesthetic elegance of Turgenev's realist novels in close readings of Rudin, A Nest of Gentry, On the Eve, and Fathers and Children, all written between 1855 and 1861. Each essay focuses on a particular aspect of Turgenev's art as it relates to his human and aesthetic concerns. This study challenges traditional views of Turgenev as an objective recorder of his times, suggesting that the engaging qualities of his novels lie less in their historicity than in the lyricism and aesthetic consciousness with which he shaped his narratives. Costlow explores the lyric meditation, pastoral longing, and unspoken emotion that are the hallmarks of Turgenev's prose and that make up his "worlds within worlds," the realms of his novels that elude the historical. Throughout she demonstrates how the aesthetics of constraint and understatement mask the author's awareness of limitation and complexity in human experience. By stressing the enigmatic and challenging qualities of his works, Costlow exposes Turgenev to revealing new readings. Originally published in 1990. Book excerpt: First published in 1961, this book examines a number of works popular in the Romantic period, during the heyday of Sir Walter Scott in the early part of the nineteenth century. Encompassing works by the likes of Alexander Pushkin, Sir Walter Scott, Adam Mickiewicz and James Fenimore Cooper, this is also a meditation on the nature of Romanticism and its enduring value, as expressed in the novel form. Donald Davie also considers the meaning and importance of ‘plot’ and of ‘realism’.

Their most recent production, The Wedding, is taken as a focal point for a retrospective discussion on the company’s development. Premiered at the festival celebrating the 40th anniversary of the company, The Wedding echoes most of the major achievements of Staniewski’s stage language and his capacity of exploring and developing the performative potential of liveness. This study consists of essays by prominent practitioners and theoreticians of theatre, director’s notes, conversations with Staniewski and other company members, selected archival materials and substantial visual coverage. It promises to be of great interest to students and scholars across the fields of theatre and performance studies.

Book excerpt: A Bibliography of Anton Chekhov in English: Studies, Translations, Reviews and Notes is offered in three appropriate parts. Part One, Studies, comprises sections for book-length bio-literary studies and bio-literary articles; introductions; comparative studies; Russian and foreign memoirs; popular studies; general and individual studies of Chekhov's plays and short stories; studies of his non-fiction, letters, notes, and diaries; and special categories: film, language and stylistics, documents and documentation, translation studies, dissertations, bibliography, and collections. Part Two, Translations, is divided into general collections, drama collections, individual dramas, story collections, individual stories; non-fiction, letters, notes, and diaries; and film. Part Three, Critical Reviews, provides a comprehensive selection of the most significant reviews in major English-language newspapers and journals through the year 1993. It is not possible to provide a comprehensive selection of an estimated 350,000 reviews of Chekhov plays, 1994-2003, but an attempt has been made to provide a representative sampling of reviews in major newspapers and current periodicals. Citations throughout this Bibliography are full and unabbreviated, the intent being to provide access to each work in every appropriate category without complicating the search process with confusing cross-listings. Entries for collections are accompanied by listings of contents in the order given in tables of contents or alphabetically. Entries for collections provide a base for subsequent listings of individual major works for addition of subsequent editions, reprints, and re-publications. Translations of plays are categorized by their most commonly known English titles and cited within categories by the English title given for a particular translation. English titles of stories have not been rationalized in this way because the large number of Chekhov's stories would require division of the section on individual stories into virtually hundreds of sub-sections. Instead, stories are listed in alphabetical order by the various English titles given for a particular translation.

The Council of the London Institute of World Affairs has carefully reconsidered the lessons to be drawn from the Institute's record in its first half-century and reshaped its plans of activities for the 1980s. As in an earlier "cold peace" era, the Council is united in its resolve not to be taken by surprise by any of the contingencies that, on a darkening world scene , must be anticipated in medium-range planning. It is thus only in keeping with comparable action taken in earlier phases of the Institute's existence that the Council has decided to suspend the publication of the Year Book after this Volume .
