Book excerpt: Each of the more than seven hundred entries in the dictionary contains a description of the historical background of each of the two types of language, literal and nonliteral, and provides an explanation for the relationship between them. Wherever possible, dates of first record in English are provided, along with the bibliographical sources of these dates; and all of the works that record those terms and expressions are given in coded form as listed in the Key to Works Cited. A Guide to Reading the Entries illustrates the typical form of an entry by analyzing an example from the dictionary that introduces five nonliteral expressions, cites thirteen bibliographical sources, and refers the reader to three other relevant entries by means of cross-references. Following the dictionary proper is a Classification of Terms According to Source, in which nearly three hundred nonliteral terms and expressions are listed under the more than four hundred literal categories from which they derive.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE intention of this book is to provide a guide for potential management and supervisors and for those who wish to understand the fundamental principles of biscuit manufacture. It does not set out to be a learned treatise. The purpose of the book is to simplify and explain processes and materials so that the 'mystique'is replaced by logic. Once the mystique is removed the biscuit maker is one step closer to anticipating and solving problems. In attempting to cover this subject within one concise volume, it is difficult to avoid over-simplification or generalisation, and apologies must be offered in advance where these occur. To wallow in the fine details of specialisation is to defeat the object of the book, and less would be achieved if the issues were confused. The reader's attention is drawn to the interpretation of formulae (recipes). Raw materials, equipment, methods, processes, and conditions vary considerably; the formulae are intended as blue prints from which, with a knowledge of the materials and aims of the processes, and by trial and error, a biscuit can be produced bearing some semblance to the original. All formulae should be interpreted in conjunction with the 'Guide to using formulae' at the beginning of Chapter 12. As the biscuit industry advances towards complete automation, plant and equipment become more advanced and sophisticated.

Now her fans can discover why the book that started it all, My Lady Notorious, has been called "storytelling at its best" (Rendezvous). Desperate to help her widowed sister and baby escape a deadly pursuer, Lady Chastity Ware dresses as a highwayman and captures the first coach to travel down the road. Coming face-to-face with its occupant, the arrogant aristocrat, Cyn Malloren, she orders him to drive her to a remote cottage. Little does Chastity realize that after long months of recovering from his war wounds, the handsome Cyn is looking for adventure, and being abducted by a cocky highwayman—obviously a lovely woman in disguise—is even more than he had hoped for. Willingly he is drawn into her devilishly reckless plan...and helplessly he is seduced by her wonderfully wicked ways.
